This video is an update on the front lawn to show you what happened after I overseeded with ryegrass. It really pays to pay attention to your turf and if you notice issues, you need to research it and follow up. If you know what I am dealing with, please let me know in the comment section. The main mistakes I made was not following up with the spots I saw and dethatching the lawn. Tell me if you agree or disagree. The good thing about bermuda is its ability to self repair and forgive mistakes.

Nice recovery. Before I knew the cycle of Bermuda, I fed it late in the fall to try to keep it green. Big mistake. After it all went dormant, it looked uniformly brown. When Spring came, I saw the damage. Then I found out you don't fertilize it late when it is trying to go dormant. My yard recovered thankfully, but now I give it it's last feeding at the end of September here in GA. My yard is beautiful already this season. Cut, cut, cut it...I cut mine twice a week, sometimes three times a week. It's fun.

You can just gradually take it down over time or just wait until spring when you do your scalp. I personally would go down gradually from 3 to 2.5, then 2 amd 1.5 over a period of 2 weeks. Since the weather is getting colder, dont expect the bermuda to recover assuming you have bermuda or zoysia.

I love Bermuda grass. I had Dead spot a couple of years ago here in SoCal and I usually don't like the Chemical method to begin with. I will scalp as low as i can go, remove the bad areas by hand then apply topsoil with bonemeal and bloodmeal mix then apply over the whole area. Dead spots gone in about a month.

Over in Louisiana where a lot of lawns are St. aug due to the crazy wet then dry changes it caused root rot in tons of yards. Been in my house since 2015 I have Bermuda lawn and plant ryegrass every winter. Love putting down stripes in the winter months. It's about 2-3 week turn around to get the yard back to green from winter to spring. My process is pretty simple. When I see the ryegrass starting to die off I cut off watering all together. The next 3-4 cuts I begin lowering my cutting height. On my final cut where I would scalp I cut the lawn the same height as before then dethatch and scalp with rotary mower w/bagger. Trick to it is to figure out about how far you can go before you fill your bagger and put a bag on each side. Once I have done the entire yard I make one more pass with the mower to pick up any stragglers. Typically fill the bagger up a few more times so its not a wasted cut by any means. I wait a few days typically after a rain and go out with my dethatching rake to hit any problem areas still lingering. I then level my lawn using a sifted soil I get locally. Over the next couple of days I water that in let it settle and add more if needed. Finally I put down some bermuda seed to help fill in those spaces I have created with leveling and throw down some 13-13-13. All in all takes about 3-4 afternoons of work and greens up completely in 2-3 weeks from start of work. After its good and going I follow up with some 44-0-0 because bermuda loves its nitrogen but to much will have you moving every other day. one note to growing ryegrass keep in mind the rye grass seed will typically come with weed seeds ready to pop up come spring. I start putting down pre emergent jan - feb to prevent that. My neighbor tried to do ryegrass this season it looked great but because he didn't apply any pre emergent he is struggling with lots of dead spots from having to use post emergent. I feel like he calls every day for me to come over and figure out what kind of weed he has now.

Well said, alot of people think overseed with rye for winter look is easy but there is some prep work before and alot after the winter to get the bermuda back in shape.

That’s some fine grass you’ve got growing buddy. I’ve recently started growing grass in my lawn as well. Previously it was about 90% weeds with a little grass thrown in. 3 months later and it’s about 98% grass. Manually removed every dandelion, pulled large patches of weeds and laid new seed. It’s been a battle but it’s a real pleasure to look at now. Cheers brother keep up the videos, I’ve learned a lot from them so far, especially the dog pee one!

I was totally puzzed and frustrated until i saw your video and now i realize spring dead spot is what is apparently going on.
@TheALG
@TheALG 2 жыл бұрын
Fungicides will help but won't really eliminate the problem. Push the bermuda to spread those spots and maintain good practices like avoiding fertilizer in the late season and over watering. There's lots of research out there on how to manage it. Just look at university peer review research.

Hey, so you have to apply fertilizer with the overseed, but your saying thats what causes spring dead spot? So I guess my questions are, do you not do a fert with the overseed? Or you still have to, but just put down a fungicide if you start seeing it in the ryegrass? Or should I seed, fert, and apply fungicide to prevent seeing dead spots? Thank you for any help! Love your videos!!

why would you use different grass and not Bermuda to reseed it?
@TheALG
@TheALG 11 ай бұрын
People with bermuda lawns will sometimes overseed with ryegrass because this will pretty much maintain a green look all year. If you just reseed bermuda, the bermuda would not germinate if it was done when it is cooler and it would go dormant in the cooler months. Ryegrass will typically only last when it is cold but will die once the heat kicks in. On another note, bermuda is self repairing and reseed is not recommended.

I agree. This is something most ppl should not do. My situation was a bit unusual since I overseeded with rye and needed to get rid of all traces of it ASAP.
@andrewp.619
@andrewp.619 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s mainly grass types like centipede, zoysia, and specifically st Augustine that you don’t really want to dethatch. Bermuda has both runners and stolons. It’s fine to cut those runners, the runners underground will make up for it. Verricutting would be preferential on Bermuda, but sometimes it’s just too spongy and taking out that matted thatch layer is necessary. I do it almost every year after I remove the rye, to cut out any of the old crowns of the perennial rye grass. Even after spraying it out chemically, rye can really hang on with some of these new varieties.

You can damage the stolons if you go too deep with a dethatcher. I did it on the medium setting and it came out fine. I also saw university peer reviewed research that says you can do it if needed but only at an extreme situation. It should not be done routinely.

Believe this or not- that rye was the problem - the reason I say this is because my friend did the same thing and got the same results (in a centipede lawn) rye will start dying before temperatures heat up sometime - destroyed his lawn - so that is 2 different type of grass same results - stay away from rye - I don’t know what happened but I know what started the problem
