In this video I make a simple #plywood #birdbox, but only using my left (non-dominant) hand as my entry to my KZfaq pal @Hand-i-craft Leo Winstanley’s #onehandedmakerschallenge. It was a fun challenge to take part in, and total respect to Leo and everyone else who continues their woodworking, their making, under difficult or challenging circumstances.
As mentioned in the video, these challenges in no way encourage or condone unsafe workshop practices - anyone who thinks otherwise really isn't paying attention - and I found that I was working more safely, more slowly, than ever partly because everything needed to be clamped down, and partly due to the amount of forethought that had to go into every operation, every cut had to be planned.
I’ll update the links to the challenge playlist when they become available. Enjoy!

Thanks Peter and a great finished product. Interesting as I’ve been thinking of making a bird box, but wanted it to have the capacity of having a camera in so now I know how to😀. The biggest tip I picked up here was the bracket for mounting the bird box, it was an inspired idea. So simple yet so effective. Even trying to maybe clamp the box in place to screw it in would have been virtually impossible due to the top heavy weighting of the box. The overwhelming theme coming out of this challenge is the ‘big’ jobs more often than not are reasonably straightforward. It’s the ‘little’ jobs that become the most time consuming and subsequently most infuriating. That kind of sums up me too, it’s just I’ve learned to accept the time thing for what it is, as opposed to what it could be😀.

Thanks Leo! Yes, I was trying to figure out how to hold up the box and fix it in place, and it occurred to me that a little shelf would do the job - and a couple of extra ‘fingers’ made it even easier. 👍👍

Hi. Love the birdbox but the recommendation is not to have a perch (your dowel). This is because predators use it to gain access to the nest box.

Thanks Ian! Yes indeed, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the MFT/plungesaw combo worked together one-handed. Not sure if that’s ‘by design’ or just a happy accident, but it turns out it’s a very safe way to cut material single-handed. 👍👍

Great idea! My grandson is turning 3 in a few weeks and he loves the cars, boxes, wagons and things I make for him. I told him when he gets older we can do a project together.. SO this is the project. I am cutting, sanding, finishing and building with only screws. Then take it all apart and flat pack and bag all the hardware for Tommy and I to put together. He can finish with gluing the perch on the front and 'paint' whatever he wants on it. ALSO, great job supporting Leo with this buil!

Watching you 'struggle' through this gives a real insight into the challenges of being a full time one handed maker. 12 months from now will it be a case of cutting the bevels on the mitre saw and then drawing the rest on your pc one handed and pressing run on the CNC one handed, voila!

Awesome video! I actually volunteer for the RSPB and I've been making loads of bat boxes, dormice nest boxes and lots of these bird boxes. I've also made the half open front for Robins and Pied Wagtails etc. plus, like you, I've modified the plans slightly. My wood of choice has been recycling broken pallets from work. The wood has been left untreated and I use dowels and exterior wood glue. I see others have mentioned already about removing the dowel from the front. I found your video while searching for ways to fit a camera inside as well as types of cameras to use. I was thinking of using a 1.5m long USB cable to allow the power pack to be swapped over without having to open the lid. The eBay link you've supplied (I presume directly to the item?) is now broken but I found it by typing the description text in instead.

Thanks! I tried it out before using it and it focussed quite happily down to about 100mm or so; typically now I’ve fitted it I haven’t had anything trigger the motion sensor, so I can’t check it!🤷‍♂️👍

Some interesting approaches. Alas I have to get something built which is urgent.... I need to move a lathe from where it is stored so am building a lathe stand from steel and have not had the time to think about this challenge.... Though I might be tempted to do it later but with had tools (apart from a drill and possibly a nail gun).

Thanks Steve. It’s always hard to give an accurate timescale because shooting video extends a project by around 3 times. Not including editing, I spent a day on the build overall; if I was making this two-handed without video I’d expect to rattle it out in less than an hour. 👍👍

I've never tried it, but it looks like holding things still is a major problem. I ever lose the use of one hand, the first thing I'm buying is the festool vacuum hold down system with the foot release pedal. As a short term alternative how about using a non slip router mat to stop things moving about.

Brilliant effort Peter, should have gone the whole hog though and rather than oil finish it you should have painted it. Holding the brush in your teeth of course! I built a couple of nesting boxes start of this year and like you I was going to put a perch on the front. Checking on the RSPB site though they say not to fit one as it is not needed by the birds but it can be used to gain access by predators. Couldn’t really see it but I took the advice and they were right, the birds are whizzing in and out those tiny holes no problem!

I got a lot out of watching this video, across the back-cloth of having watched Leo on some of his videos; bottom line this is really important stuff. In 'disability' thinking there's emphasis on environment that disables or enables. Across that factor making-stuff KZfaq videos are a treasure trove of resource data: because of you have multiple diverse persons, setting up working environments that work for them (across myriad considerations); so you have a Wal-Mart of components from which to pick-and-mix. Leo takes a very singular existential and practical approach; where that is well demonstrated for me in the 'business' of his working hand. Given the plasticity of our brain, Leo's hand-led (or expressed) approach will mediate particular brain development over time: where that becomes resource to his approach; where that resource will work across multiple planes in what he strives to do. So a trajectory for personality leading to working environment, and working environment leading to product-output and further personal development; kicks in. It's then enriching to see your approach cross paths with Leo's lead. Your single working hand works differently from Leo's. That representing your person, and the working environment your person has led you to build, and the further personal development working in that environment has led to. Multiply that across all the other resourceful online characters being drawn into intersecting with Leo's life project, and its easy to see how rich the field that is going to yield. I'm grateful to all of you for bringing this about, and channeling it's fruits into my life. In all sorts of ways we pretty much all encounter 'disability' of one form or another, and we can learn so much from one another in pressing on regardless. Stay safe.

One comment when researching scientists specialising on birds recommend skipping the peg, reducing the risk of larger predators sitting on the peg waiting to ambush any bird peeking out of the opening.

…and a £5 camera from China. We all like a bargain and are happy to buy from China. But should we continue to do this? Questionable environmental / employment standards help achieve rock bottom prices. We should all be looking to support local. Employment and self sufficiency is important - Think PPE. That’s my little rant over - love the bird box and the act of kindness to Leo. 10 minute workshop rocks ☺
