Interestingly enough, your own bones do the same thing. It's why lead poisoning is such a big problem when you get older and you seem fine when young, as the bones have absorbed lead and start to release it through osteoporosis. But silver isn't absorbed into the bones and the body can pass it eventually. I never made the connection that the same mechanism could be used for silver refining.
@chriswolfe1204
@chriswolfe1204 Ай бұрын
In cupelling it's not really a chemical thing though... you can cupel with Portland cement. That is, capillary action on the molten lead oxide is a better explanation for the cupel behavior. In the body, lead interferes with a wide variety of enzymes including those that regulate calcium balance; that's why lead is taken up into and released later from bones.

there's often a connection with gods of the dead also being gods of the underground, Hades being one, so ritualistic bone offerings when purifying ores doesn't seem too far fetched. it could also be that the purification of ore using bones is what lead to gods of death to be associated with mining, so it may be a "chicken and the egg" situation there.

He would've been classified as a blowhard back in the day. He also isn't bothering to actually weigh out the flux, he's just randomly adding amounts. I can promise you he added WAY too much soda ash which will dissolve the silver with it when used in a massive excess. It also will destroy the crucible far quicker.

@MathiasGreenwalde He's a millionaire Investment Banker that bought Cerro Gordo with an Investment Firm with the idea of turning it into a tourist trap. He fails to mention that however and makes it seem like he spent his life saving to live alone there to preserve it, all while asking for donations. Plus he doesn't "preserve" anything and the hotel burned down suspiciously not long after he bought it and had it insured.

@@BaronOBeefDip Is that really why people watch Brent though? I feel like a lot of people watch his mine exploration videos, and even if he isn't preserving anything, and wants to create a tourist trap he isn't doing a great job of it. He is preserving quite a bit, and documenting a ton with his videos. Even if he throws away 90% of it and makes a tourist trap, that is still more than ever would have been saved otherwise and will still get people out there and thinking about American history. He does research, puts his life at risk going into a historical mine, and gives us entertaining videos, while making American history interesting. Even if everything else is a lie, it's still a net positive for everyone.

Stick with product sponsorships. When you suggest where people should entrust their physical/mental health or finances things often don't work out so well, historically. I'm fine with basically any other kind of sponsorship lol
