Maya Kowalski, the subject of Netlfix’s “Take Care of Maya” documentary, took the stand Monday in her family’s civil trial against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. Kowalski emotionally recalled the last time she saw her mom, Beata Kowalski, before she took her own life in the garage of their family home. “I never saw her again,” Kowalski tearfully said. Kowalski testified she was kept away from her mother and father while being treated at the hospital, stating staff kept her separated from her parents.

It’s so heartbreaking because she will live with this trauma and the loss of her mother the rest of her life and she is so young. Trauma like this brings out chronic illnesses, mental health issues, etc.. over time. She deserves every penny she is getting. Shame on Johns Hopkins.

They 100% Imprisoned Maya without a doubt. Preventing her from seeing/talking to her parents, preventing her from even talking to a fellow patient is absolutely ridiculous. THAT IS IMPRISIONMENT! They should be charged for keeping her hostage.

Everyone that was involved should get fired. They knew that without the parents present they could do with her what they wanted. They wanted to show her at 10 years of age that they were in control of her life. They need to be held accountable. I can’t imagine how many more of this situations are happening through out the medical industry. People need to be held accountable again no matter where you work at.

I am very proud of Maya to stand up like this. She’s almost 17. She has a disability and that kind of pain I could see the Mom because the first thing the hospital said is let’s get you off of these narcotics and then she was in more pain these doctors are monsters this is lawyers expect them to receive give a defense, but look what they’ve done and the judge keeps abstaining it and going in that direction and giving statements that they’re really not responsible, blah blah it really makes me angry.

The hospital was stuck between a rock and a hard place, and as a provider you would be expected to understand that. They're duty was to the child, not her mother. If they hadn't done it then that family would be suing them for not doing anything. The mother took made a choice to kill herself and leave the child behind while knowing her decision would further traumatize Maya. She intentionally ended the investigation and made herself a forever victim. Maybe those investigators were on the right track.

@76482 If the hospital staff’s goal was actually for Maya’s well-being then why would they be isolating her from even other children and parents on her same floor in the hospital? That’s a common tactic which ab*sers use so they’re not found out and if they had nothing to hide and weren’t doing anything wrong then I see no reason why Maya wouldn’t be allowed to interact with others if she was feeling well enough
@76482
@76482 8 ай бұрын
@@EternalGalaxies, It's called a process of elimination. Someone other than the mother could've been doing something to harm the child. The hospital had to isolate her and see if her medical condition improved, worsened, or remained the same. If she improved then investigators know which direction move in next step of their protocal. Also to note the hospital wasn't making those decisions about Maya, they were following govt instructions.

A patient has rights in a hospital that conflict with the hospitals patient rules. Hospitals hire mentally insane individuals who suffer anger issues and work in all different hospital areas because they look good on paper and have a degree but the hospital doesn't check into them hard like they should to see social media posts that are insane, criminal records thatake one cringe. All this needs changing so hospitals will change for the better.

Maya is so strong and sweet. The whole family have gone through a lot. I pray that they are healed. Hope there will be law regulations to prevent something like this happen again. I feel that there might be some cover up from the hospital staff. Perhaps when time went by, in the second month or so on they already knew the truth (Maya is ill and has CRPS) but tried to cover their mistakes up. Otherwise why Maya can't talk to other kids?

I agree. I've noticed many instances where he interrupted the moment and rushed the witness, or abruptly asked another question. His timing isn't the best, unfortunately. Often silence is very powerful, or a bombshell statement needs a few seconds to really sink in. I'm not saying there hasn't been incredibly powerful testimony, just that if he really honed in on his timing, the testimony would have even more impact and poignancy.

I don't think she did it out of pain. She was desperate to get Maya the treatment she needed. She sat there knowing how much pain Maya was in day after day and then that doctor told her that she was at risk for blood clots without treatment and that her life was in jeopardy. Nothing was moving forward at all and she felt like if she was out of the picture Maya would go home and her dad would get her appropriate treatment. I think she honestly believed that she was trading her own life for Maya's.... and maybe she did.

And beware of hospital "social workers". Require that anyone you speak with identify themselves and do not talk to the social workers without an attorney present. The hospital social workers work hand in hand with Child Protective Services and you'd be shocked at how quick and baseless they are at throwing accusations around. When my infant son was in the PICU for IUGR, the hospital social workers accused me of having "severe Postpartum Depression" when there was absolutely zero evidence of such, and I'd never had post partum with any of my 5 previous children. I won't say all, but many of the "social workers" are disgusting crooks.

I had a horrific experience with hospital social workers as well. I went in for pain due to my Crohns disease and they thought I was suicidal and lying. They lied to me and said I would be arrested if I didnt' agree to go to a mental institution. I was forced under threat of arrest to go for 2 days. I will never set foot in a hosptial again unless I am on my deathbed@@jessisblessed6689

I am so worried, due to the way the judge is, Maya will Not get a fair trial. I wonder who is filling his bank account, perhaps a JH donor🤔

Omg this breaks my heart for maya and her family i was crying so much listening to her talk about the last time she saw her mother and got her mother a matching necklace that she was still wearing the day she hung herself omg that had me balling my eyes out so 😔 😢 i feel for this family the unnecessary pain and emotional pain this hospital caused this family for months and they did everything in there power to keep the mother away from her daughter all this could have been handled totally different if they would have just looked at the medical history and spoke with doctors maya and her mother saw instead they chose to do none of that and make an assumption the mother caused all this.

Why is that woman behind her father smiling at her saying that she never saw her mom again? Disturbing.

I was thinking she must be listening to something other than the trial. I can’t imagine smiling through that. It brought me to tears.

Some people can’t sit through and listen to people’s pain. She brought headphones and sat on her phone. Who is to say she heard what was even going on? Focus on the bigger picture. This family needs justice. That lady means nothing.

The hospital better pay this child enough money to not have any worry in the world ever again and just joy, this won't come close to replacing her mom, but they need to pay big time for what they did to her!
