What happens when you put Formula 1 tyres on a road car? Do you get F1 levels of grip or is it impossible to keep them hot?
In this video, I put F1 tyres on my road car and we find out.
👉 WE PUT THESE ON A NORMAL CAR
We put these F1 tyres on a Toyota MR2! Check it out here • Can F1 Tires Make Your...
Spending $20,000 to BEAT A SUPERCAR | MORE FAST Episode 1
• Buying a $5000 Project...
Our main problem was getting the F1 wheels to actually fit the car. Formula one wheels use a centre-lock to make them easy to remove, whereas normal road cars, usually have 4 or 5 nuts or bolts holding the wheel on.
So, what we’ve made is a set of adapters that bolt onto the original hub. We spent a ton of time measuring, drawing and machining them - from a solid block - to get them right, so we couldn’t wait to finally see them on the car for the first time.
🟢 Thanks so much to Caterham for lending us the car, it was perfect!
Check them out here 👉 www.caterhamcars.com/en
On a Formula 1 car, the super grippy soft tyres should drastically improve braking. But, without the same level of downforce I really didn’t think they would make a difference…
We know that tyres aren’t just for racing round a track. So, after what I thought was some successful testing, we wanted to try them out in the real world. First up, a trip to the shops.

Yes. Scott could wear a white racing suit and helmet with a dark visor, but I am not sure what he would be called. The Scogg perhaps. They mentioned future engineering projects, so they might be making some feck off wings for the Caterham before going for some lap times. The problem is going to be the time it takes to change back to the original hubs, but it so has to happen.

Interesting experiment even considering the day this was released. The contact patch was too small so I reckon they were inflated too hard. Also, I wonder if the rubber is just too hard for a Caterham. Mine used to run on ACB10s which are a lightweight crossply tyre with rubber soft enough for the lightweight Caterham. I bet you couldn't get those F1 tyres hot enough for them to be any good on a Caterham.
@Obi-WanKannabis

Temperature is the most important thing. These things are designed to operate at super high temperatures. A normal road car will almost never get up to the temperatures that you need to for F1 slicks
@MrDSimba
@MrDSimba 2 жыл бұрын
Achieving optimal tire performance in F1 is somewhat of dark art. There are so many variables that need to be accounted for: tire compound, car setup, track surface, track temp, and even the driver (this is far from a complete list). We see this clearly whenever new compounds are introduced into F1 and teams are still collecting data and trying to understand how the tires react to different stresses. Anyways, at it’s core, optimal tire performance can be achieved by heating the bulk of the compound as uniformly as possible and holding the tire temperature within the optimal performance window. When you don’t achieve this, you immediately start losing lap time and risk experiencing issues like blistering, graining, cold graining, etc.
@MultiArrie

Love this video production concept! I wholeheartedly believe you are onto something big here... I'm talking... Like *REAL big.* I could see a streaming service (ie Netflix or Ama Prime Vid) picking this up. I think if you did two(+) separate, unrelated projects per _episode_ it would really fill it out and bring it closer in line to a typical 18-22min TV program. If you have any interest I could ask some people I know that do production work for prime Vid out here in Seattle. No guarantees what that would do, it could get some advice, could get your video passed up the chain, could do absolutely nothing at all, impossible to say but if you're interested I'd be happy to ask them what they think?? 🤷 Anyways, end of rant. I'm honestly curious if that car can even get those tires up to the optimal temperature, considering it weighs around 200kg less than an F1 car, and has basically no downforce, perhaps even lift at speed, couldn't seem to find any data on the matter. With that in mind, I imagine it would require some serious thrashing from that car to even warm them up properly. All that aside, still a great video!

@@Muzikman127 A supermarket car park is deemed to a public road and we did see them on a feeder roundabout at the beginning. I think they may have filmed it all in one retail park by the looks of it, but yes they did break the law and could have potentially lost their licence and had massive fines for the four bald tyres.. they also willingly drove a car knowing it was an MOT failure (on Tyres and Wheel arches) therefore their insurance could have been null and void if they'd had an accident. All in all it wasn't a well thought-out stunt, unless it was done with the express permission of the Supermarket/McDonalds/The Tyre Fitters/Local Police/Insurance company etc.... to ensure everything was above board. Which I very much doubt......

@@hardcoretam That's Bullshit, and a two second search on Google would have helped you find out. Having a road legal car is part and parcel of valid insurance. Let's say you have an accident resulting in injury or death and the Police inspect and find your car to be purposely modified in such a manner as to not be road legal or able to pass an MOT, then you my friend are in a world of shit........ and your Insurer will be running for the hills. Read the small print on your car insurance (assuming that you are actually old enough to drive)?

I guess downforce also plays a part on the tyre grip as well. F1 has loads of aero stuff on it
@whysoslow1999
@whysoslow1999 2 жыл бұрын
Tyre coefficient of friction* actually goes down with increased load (like you get from downforce), these tires would still be nearly twice as grippy as normal street tires if you could keep them up to temp, which you just simply cant even with tire warmers and hard driving. *of course the lateral/longitudinal force, that you get from coefficient of friction * load still goes up with increased load as the friction doesnt drop that steeply, but point being that you dont need downforce for grippy tires to be grippy, other than for the temperatures.
@zyme4569
@zyme4569 2 жыл бұрын
@@whysoslow1999 I get that if they were hotter they'd give more grip. I don't understand what you mean surely the whole point of creating downforce through aero bodywork is to push the car down into the road at higher speeds and increasing tyre grip?
@whysoslow1999
@whysoslow1999 2 жыл бұрын
@@zyme4569 The grip that you feel is the load that pushes the tire down onto the ground multiplied by the coefficient of friction. Coefficient of friction goes down, but not enough to cancel out the effect of downforce. Same thing means that you dont need the extra load from the downforce to have the tires be grippy, they are still far grippier than normal tires.
