Over the last decade my enjoyment of diet pop has gone past love...but now we dare say *addicted*. Science based proffesioanls I look up to said it was fine...until I had my own health scare. Over the past half year I gave up diet pop to see if it changed my health in any way. I include the 4 steps on how I quit the bad habit, the hardest parts, and we dip our toes into the debate of "Is diet pop bad for you" from the likes of Andrew Huberman, Layne Norton, and some others in the field. Enjoy episode number 23 of My Wellness Diary

Hey! Endocrinologist here 🙋🏼‍♀️ when we look at medication response in bone density the hip bone density is the most important predictor of outcomes. So if you saw a statistically significant bone density increase in 6 months that would be considered a good response no matter what your spine shows.

as someone who had a diet dr pepper addiction (at least 3 cans a day) can confirm, kicking the habit and finding moderation is absolutely doable. it's probably been like 15 years at this point but I only drink soda as a treat when i'm out to eat, at the airport, mixer in a cocktail ect so maybe twice a month? i do drink sparkling water daily tho! still crave that carbonation lol

Love the video. Been fighting osteopenia and osteoporosis for years (genetic) and hip density ALWAYS improves before back density. I was able to improve my hip density with just adding walking. Back will either take more or longer. Wait a full year and I'm sure you will see improvement. Great job!

like I responded to keltie you'll want to add Vitamin D3 and K2 (K2 is what delivers calcium to the bones but it is hard to get, not wanting to hit "bro-science" but I'll go into detail if you need) also marrow is collagen based so you'll want to add in some of that too.... lastly, I know this will spark a war but check your glucose levels as glucose is a leading cause in these issues (inflammation due to glucose)

When you get older you'll see diet soda as not such a benign habit. I used to drink tons of the stuff. But, it creates insulin spikes, increases appetite, leads to weight gain and the possibility of type II diabetes.

So so so relate to the "good at cold turkey, not great at moderation". Cut out soda and meat in 2014, BEST CHOICE I EVER MADE. The last 3 ish years since covid started I'm struggling with the moderation with beer and alcohol. Not ready to go cold turkey but really good at enjoying one too many.

I stopped drinking juice and soda as the main drink for a meal for 14 years now and the biggest difference I see (besides of obvious of lack of craving etc.) is how syrupy sweet it feels and tastes for me. I can only handle a couple of sips before I have to put it away for another day.

I stopped drinking coke zero (again) a couple of months ago and the biggest change is freedom from the intense craving I get for those types of drinks. And it also positively influence my overall soda consumption and I almost only drink carbonated water now. I can't handle only having a coke zero every once in a while. Once I start to drink it, I start to crave it and the escalation is on... So now I am off the diet soda train for the second and hopefully last time 🤗

Yes! Coke Zero is SO addictive! If I have one, I almost always start craving them for the next few days. Now I barely ever get them, because it's so hard to "quit"... I will have them now just once in a blue moon and only when I'm at a restaurant. Cause if I start just having them willy nilly at home, it's game over! 😅

@Andrea S Same here. Pop has always been such a trigger for me. Cut it several years ago, along with proper diet and exercise lost a bunch of weight. Had one at a theme park thinking I would be fine, two sips and the train derailed 😅. Have cut and went back to multiple times. Cut it again three weeks ago, because I have done enough research to realize that it is literally drinking poison and I have no desire to be in an early grave. Trying to get my mom off of it. My grandma never could kick it but she is still fine in her 70s and she has been drinking some form of soda since the late 60s early 70s.

Wow I cant believe you did this test! I am 55 and just discovered I have osteopenia and it really bummed me out. Like I am worrying about it. And I have drank diet pop my whole life. Well since a teenager anyway. I have learned that alcohol, which I also really like, also causes bone loss. So here I am trying to lessen and eventually eliminate diet pop and alcohol from my life. I do like Lacroix and Bubbly so I have that going for me. But I must say if I could go back in time I would not start drinking diet pop. And alcohol for that matter too.

The timing of this is spot on. I gave up soda cold turkey at the beginning of the month. Dr. Pepper was my go to and it was all I was drinking, up to 2 liters a day. I've tried this so many times and so many ways. My previous record was 4 months. Usually day 2 and 3 are the worst for me because I just feel hungover. I've learned that I can't do moderation. I've tried 1 a week, 1 only with dinner. The carbonation is the thing I miss the most and haven't found a good substitute. I tried the sodas with no sugar and no caffeine but the aspartame just gave me a headache. So now I'm 6 days in on this journey drinking mostly water with some sports drinks and lemonades sprinkled in when I need flavor. The want is still there but I'm holding strong for now. And at the very least, I don't have to get up 5 times in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

Recovering Diet Coke addict: I never paid attention to any physical changes with stopping because I don’t really exercise😅. I had a moment where I couldn’t throw cans away one week and saw what a 24 can/week habit * actually * looked like. The cravings were intense which pushed me to quit. I’d like to say I’m a occasional drinker but what happens is I buy a mini pack, drink it in ~3 days and repeat for a two weeks. Then I go nearly a year without a sip and repeat.

Great job Keltie! I’m on day 40 of cutting out all pop and basically sugary drinks. I’m completely addicted to Dr Pepper. Last year I also cut out energy drinks. Definitely feel a lot better. But like you, I just love the carbonation and am drinking a lot more sparkling water. Hoping one day I can have Dr Pepper in moderation but for now, I’m loving how I feel with just water, sparkling water and electrolytes.

Fellow Canadian here and coke Zero all the way. I had a bad diet pop addiction, and gave it up for sparkling water back in 2018, and honestly the best 'health' benefit was learning I could do something hard. Like I know that sounds kind of silly but it was effing hard to kick. So it gave me a level up in the "I can do hard shit" category. Now I'm more of a moderation girl with my coke zeros, made a bit worse cause the f*ckers came out with caffeine free, so now I have no excuse to not drink it after 5 🙄

Thank you for this. It was nice to witness someone with the same addiction to me. I used to tell myself "it's better than being addicted to smoking or alcohol." But you know it's wrong. I once explained to a guy that I don't like the taste of diet coke...I love that chemical carbonated hit right in the beginning. I completely quit when I was pregnant and breastfeeding because I care more about my baby than myself, but I restarted and I'm so upset. I'm almost worse now because I'm exhausted and I thought I deserved it after quitting for my baby. I would suggest not restarting, it's a slippery slope. Although nothing helps a hangover more than a McDonalds Diet Coke...except for a Vega Pre-workout, so just do that. Support a good Vancouver based company and don't let that addiction back into your life:)

I’m also pretty sure it takes quite a long time normally for bone density to improve - for example I have to get scans done every 2-5 years with the NHS, so the fact that one of the scores improved dramatically is quite a tell I think of what the phosphoric acid in the diet colas does 💙 (leaches calcium from the bone - it is also found in cheese but the calcium in the cheese breaks down the acid - since Diet Coke doesn’t have calcium, it searches elsewhere in the body for the calcium to break it down) xxx

I had a bad diet pepsi addiction. I cold turkey-ed it and quit altogether. Yes, I went thru feeling like absolute hell and bad headaches, but I got thru it..within two weeks of quitting everyone was asking what I was doing different with my skin- it was so much glowier than before. I have never looked back. I have not had even one soda in 7 years, I feel so much better without it. Carbonated water definitely helps when I’m bored drinking just water..I do drink coffee, but mostly decaf...I’m contemplating dropping that habit as well as I hate “needing” a fix. Good luck!

I haven’t had soda in years until now. Sprouts had a buy one get one deal on sugar free root beer and I recently cut back on sugar so I drink one as a sweet treat every now and then. I recommend SPINDRIFT carbonated water because it is all natural (no natural or artificial flavors). Also, now that it’s getting hot outside (it’s 91 degrees in Texas 😅) freeze some cut up watermelon cubes, buy a lime and some fresh mint, blend the frozen watermelon, lime juice & mint. It’s refreshing and delicious. I don’t drink alcohol anymore but adding coconut rum to that is really delicious. If anyone knows a good nonalcoholic alternative to coconut rum please let me know! 🙏

I ended up with EOE and an autoimmune reaction that took me to the emergency room for emergency surgery to open up my throat. After that moment, I never drank it again. I went cold turkey after almost 40 years of drinking it. I totally relate with you about taste. When I think about it now, it sounds gross. No craving at all. And it's nice not to drink Formaldehyde and other garbage in Diet Coke. I drink no caffeine at all now. No headaches. Nothing. Also glad not to be a slave to it. I started drinking coke at like 22, and recently stopped a few years later. For me, I like sweet and fizzy drinks with meals. I don't buy soda in large quantities and only get one bottle or a pack of minis. I may have one with dinner along with a sparkling water. Sometimes I'll have a glass of fruit juice sometimes instead of soda at all so I just have a little serving size of sweet and still enjoy the fizz I love so much. I also felt like soda made me dehydrated... I just felt thirsty for water when I'd drink it. I used to have a soda a day while weaning off, but now I mostly drink water. Even as a kid, I was constantly gulping down instant tea or lemonade. Just drinking water/seltzer has been helpful! I think it may be helping with my frequent headaches, too.

Phosphoric Acid - in both diet and sugar-sweetened colas. My dietetics professor told us decades ago that it requires calcium to be digested, and drinking cola sodas was one of the worst things we could do for our bone health. There are published studies on this.

I cut out all soda 8 years ago and switched to sparkling water because I realized what I really liked was the carbonation. Now I pretty much drink a cup of coffee in the morning, 1 can of sparkling water (Waterloo is my favorite brand) at lunch, then water the rest of the day. Another lovely video, Keltie. I like that you keep challenging yourself. When I lived in Florida, I drank a lot of soda. Since I've been back in the Netherlands, I started to not drink it as much anymore. This video made the pop and the fizz so nice sounding, though.

When I gave up Diet Coke (in 2006) I stopped getting daily afternoon headaches. Kudos for you for giving it up! This year I’m giving up shopping (and doing a no buy year which I’ve been documenting on my channel). It’s hard to break any kind of addiction ! You are inspiring me to work harder in my health! I love these challenges you do for yourself - informative and entertaining ❤

I gave up my 25 year 2-5 cans a day habit 3 months ago. I REALLY struggled (I’m a mum of three young kids and I have two jobs 😩 oh and I don’t drink coffee, so a 5am DC was not unheard of). Anyway my skin is way better but that’s likely because I now drink a stack of water a day to replace the DC. Mostly did it for gut health, plus teeth and bones. Haven’t touched a can and don’t intend do as I now have that weird thing about not wanting to break the run 😂 ps loving your channel which I just discovered 🙌🏻

I oddly enough got sick of pop a couple of years ago and started trying out sparkling water which I previously hated- my favourites are Bubly and AHA (they have a 35mg caffeine one too if you want a pick me up!) and they're amazing! I do like a diet Dr. Pepper every once in awhile; I'd say maybe 2-4 times a week, whenever I want something ~spicy~ instead of just water with dinner. I have become a kombucha fanatic as well, trying to fix my gut biome- I'm sooo interested in what that guy was saying about the thyroid thing because I have thyroid issues!! My favourite kombucha is definitely Better Booch- they taste kinda like IPAs and are just sooo good.

What I am about to say is anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt but one of my friends was an avid diet coke drinker. He drank at least 1 every few hours and at least 1 per meal. He was diagnosed with early onset dementia (I think he was mid to late 50s) and the doctor gave him less than a year before he lost his ability to make lucid conscious decisions. It was so serious that he even drew up a will and found a doctor for assisted suicide when the time came when he could no longer make his own decisions. One of the last ditch lifestyle changes his doctor told him to make was to stop drinking diet coke completely. That was at least 7 years ago. He is still sharp as a tack and very much in his right mind and healthier than before. Maybe it was diet coke, maybe it was a combination of other factors but that diet coke habit was a huge change in his daily habits.

I have to admit though I do enjoy the taste of regular Coke and Dr. Pepper. It is hard on enamel and not nutritious. I just try to limit consumption. It’s definitely easier to not drink it if it’s not at home. I always think it tastes better from a fountain drink too.

I am totally addicted to Dr.Pepper. I tried cutting it out for 8 weeks and then trying to have it in moderation... Unfortunately it didn't work. I don't drink tea or coffee or alcohol (but I ended up replacing it with Starbuck Dragon fruit Lemonade refresher) I would create excuses in my head, reasons why I deserved it and had earned it. I drank it so much that for a lot of my friends if they see Dr.Pepper they think of me in that associated with it. I figured at that point I need to make a drastic change. I can't stand diet drinks personally, just not the same kick but I'll probably do the same as you and try to find a carbonated water to help kick that desire. Fingers crossed I can find something. I'm trying to develop some good habits before I turn 30 because I want to feel, look, and be better for my future self. I'm talking with a dietitian and a therapist now for many other reasons but also to have support in kicking the habit. Good luck to anyone doing the same or struggling with it. I see you and yes it is just that fucking hard.

I've been a huge diet cola drinker for 19 years. I quit on Tuesday, due to the advice of my chiropractor (I have severe lumbar injuries). Both Tuesday night, and Wednesday night, I was sleepwalking. I've never slept-walked before in my entire life. On Tuesday, I woke up in the morning and found my nightstand light on, and my thyroid replacement medication all over my bed. I have no memory. I went to sleep on Wednesday night after showering. I remember getting under the covers, and turning off my nightstand light. I woke up on the coach in my living room. I was effing freezing. I'm not sure if it's caffeine withdrawal, or aspartame withdrawal. I don't think it's caffeine, because I replaced my 6 daily diet colas, with caffeine pills in the morning.

I love your videos, Keltie! My trick for having things in moderation with soda is I don’t keep it in my house and only drink when going out to eat. I don’t go out to eat very much but that arbitrary line really helped limit my cravings, and then I found when I did get soda, I didn’t finish it and it made my stomach upset. My husband and I stopped drinking soda about a year ago. He did the La Croix for a while and then made the switch to just unflavored carbonated water. I don’t like any of it so I pretty much only drink water. You can do it!

I’m Diet Coke free for just over a year now. I drank it a lot, thinking it was helping me maintain my 80+ several year weight loss. Stopping Diet Coke made me feel better, about just as much better as I felt after losing the weight. I felt like both helped me “level up” how good I feel in a resting state. Never going back. Also started talking calcium rich almond milk in my coffee since I am susceptible to osteoporosis.

Try adding vitamins D3 and K2 to your routine. You do not actually have to swallow the capsules you can also cut them open and rub them into your skin (e.g. your feet). The trick about moderation is doing everything in moderation including moderation. That means a little excess here and there is perfectly o.k.

Well done Keltie! I don't drink diet anything, and I generally never ingest artificial sweeteners, because every time I have accidentally done so I've gotten the most violent diarrhea and stomach cramps imaginable. I have a chronic digestive disorder and the doctors say that's what's causing the reaction... If I have soda, it's got to be a straight up Coca Cola for me (Or Faxe Kondi, which is a Danish 7Up dupe)

I go through phases of what diet soda I am obsessed with. But the thing is there is always a diet soda I'm obsessed with. Right now it's generic Kroger brand diet soda. I drink regular diet coke or sugar free Baja Blast (0 calories) id the generic stuff sells out. I am attempting to lower my consumption from 7-8 cans a day to 2-4 and then step down to none or once every so often from there. I'm only on day two and its awful so far, but I do like the tea I've been drinking :) I put nothing in the tea. I 100% understand what you mean by needing that initial crack from the can and that first sip...it's my one vice other than sweets, but even with sweets I can control myself most of the time. But diet soda....my god it has a hold on me. I searched for videos on this topic and this one came out first and gives me hope that I can at least cut back.

when I was a kid my uncle's sister told me about how bad soda is. She said that athletes who were known for having good diets and exercising on a regular basis were ending up in the hospital with broken bones because the soda they consumed had eaten away at their bones, making them more fragile so any injury during their games would result in massive damage to their body. The second she told me this I quit cold turkey. I was around 10 at the time so imagine soda was my life and that very second I was like let me have a glass of milk because I do not want to affect my calcium levels. I'm 28 now and only have a soda when the water at a restaurant tastes weird (which thankfully has only happened like 3 times in my life). I now get the worst hiccups when I drink soda or other carbonated beverages. It immediately gives me a headache and literally every sip will give me hiccups so even if I get them to stop, the next sip will start it again. It makes drinking carbonated drinks absolutely miserable so I just don't do it and I don't have any cravings for it.

I stopped drinking milk over 30 years ago. I stopped drinking all sodas over 20 years ago. Probably two of the best fluid intake dietary decisions I've ever made. The four fluids I drink on a regular basis are water, coffee, beer and wine. On occasion I'll have a cocktail but nothing made with sugary mixers. I drink at least 2 to 3 liters of just water a day. (Water from reversed osmosis then filtered through a carbon filter. The carbon takes the "sharpness" out of the purified water and mellows the taste.) I would suggest avoiding any additives to water such as the stuff found in energy or diet drinks. I'm almost 70 years old, commute on my bicycle around town 1200 miles a year and go backpacking in the southern Arizona deserts for days at a time. I learned to love the taste of water after finding myself very very thirsty on occasion from all that hot desert hiking. In fact, my mouth waters at the thought of drinking water. Good luck on your personal health journey.

I was really obsessed with Diet Coke back in the day. I would reach for it during boring meetings to boost my mood, when I watched movies to help me enjoy the movie, etc. I tried to replace it with Diet Rite and it sort of worked because I had NO interest in Diet Rite (which is made with Splenda). I went back to Diet Coke immediately. Eventually, I realized that I was experiencing a euphoric rush when I drank it, and I came across some research that suggested some people can get addicted to Aspartame because it can fake out your psychological/physical response. I was kind of freaked out by that, more so than all the warnings about Aspartame itself. I gave it up after that, struggling for almost 6 months whenever I had a boring meeting, movie, etc. I'm glad it's gone, and I can't drink even one Diet Coke because I go right back to the obsession.
