I once heard you say you're thinking of running home after Tunesia... If so, you may be able to use that thought to your advantage: Concerning the "the last bits are always SO hard no matter how easy/hard the goal is"-mindset (which we all suffer from), it's indeed really all in the mind. When I plan a 2000 vertical meter mountain tour, I'm pretty exhausted at 1800m, but when I plan a 3000 vertical meter mountain tour, I'm NOT tired after 1800m, not even a bit. So, here's the trick: I usually plan an extended version of my tour (like linking an extra peak or 2) and focus on that extended goal: If you set a goal beyond what you *actually* want to achieve (running home after tunesia / 3000m mountain tour), and convince yourself that you're really going for that "beyond-goal". Then, when you reach your "old, initial goal" (tunesia/2000m mountain tour), you can choose to go "Nah F this, this is the minimum I insisted to achieve and what I REALLY set out for anyway, I did it, let's go home and celebrate. The problem with this approach is, you may find yourself running all the way home, as sometimes you DO end up going for the beyond-goal... Good luck reaching your intermediate checkpoint of Tunesia!

Imagine this did go the other way.. that the Sahara was the first obstacle, with everything left afterwards… the sand, the van, the border lines.. all that in the first weeks, rather than at the finish line. We all know Russ would’ve made it regardless.. but without all the experience the rest of the continent shared.. and the skills made along the way. It would’ve made for a different story - and it’s curious to think about!
