In Thailand and much of southeast Asia, farmers burn paddy fields after harvesting in part to help return some nutrients to the soil and also to rid any viruses/bacteria/parasites that could damage or kill the next crop. Not sure if that's what they're doing where you are though but might be a similar idea

the burning is a method of fertilising the field I forget what they call it but its a controlled burn they wet with fire retardant or by eye make gaps in the grass to stop the burning at a certain point basically the ashes off all the burnt grass acts as food

Why would Algeria give him a visa if he has been threatening the country by saying he will get the bbc involved if they refuse the visa and his logistics manager also threatening the country to put them in a bad light. Algeria is a sovereign nation that really couldn’t care less about this venture. Algerian desert is also full of malitia that the military are fighting 24/7 and he would require a police escort through the country and at 50km a day that would take 47 days.

People have left and joined the team since the beginning of the mission. I think it's planned, although I'm not sure what the planning is, and I'm sure it changes sometimes. I do have a feeling Guus is here to stay at least.

@@607 Hey, the challenge has finished now. I won't spoil too much for you but Harry was essentially let go/fired after the Congo incident, they realised they needed someone who had far more knowledge and experience in Africa (Guus). Not too sure about Jarred, think he had some family issue.

I feel like the nice boobs T-shirt scenario pretty much sums up your whole journey. Get stuck up by some unfortunate circumstance, then somehow come away from it for the better. Also it’s a law in Algeria he would need a police escort for 47 days. Algeria will most likely not waste its resources whilst it’s fighting terrorism in the desert. Alternative to Algeria is the coastal Western Sahara/Morocco route. The only trouble is there is a travel advisory against the first few kms in the south of the country. They'd need a good fixer...

@@petertaylor4980 They wouldn't. Tangier would be presumably the end goal in this case. Not the most northerly point in Africa (that's Ras Angela in Tunisia). Its a plan B if Algeria remains stubbornly blocked. Its still running the whole continent north-south in a way.
