I'm hoping the tv show will be based in the present and a continuation of all the books by telling stories of the past to introduce characters...I want the romance of Louis and Lestat to continue in the now...

I'm less tan five minutes in but thank you for pointing out just how much and really how needlessly Rice's works sexualize minors. It's really weird and no one else seems to talk about how damn MUCH it happens. I feel like there would be way more judgement or at least noting it if this was a male author. Also thanks for doing these books, I really do like Rice's world but I often just can't get through the books.

I think the reason is very simple. I feel like people have no understanding of history or how men think at all. Let’s start with Anne herself who grew up in a different generation where it was very normal for men to sexualize young women. Hell you still see it today. Only difference is that now people don’t take that bull anymore. She grew up with men being a holes. Two the character David Talbot is a man. Actually is an old man because he was in his 60’s when he came into the series and the series takes place in the 80’s NOT 2024. Again 70’s and 80’s sexualized young female. Brooke Shields comes to mind. So she wrote the book in this case early 90’s. The series takes place around the 80’s. The character is an old man who like a lot of men sexualized young girls. Why do you want to live in a bubble? Before asking these questions THINK for a moment and put yourself in the authors shoes and then put yourself in the characters shoes. Think of the time period, does the story take place during Roman Empire , Greek Empire etc and if you don’t know much about the time then take a moment and do some research and you will get your answer. If she would have been alive now I don’t think her books would involve so many minors because we’re living in different times. Of course that is if she was writing a novel based on this time period. You can’t write about the history of times and just write the nice things of the era. You have to write about the mess up things that were quite normal in the era. That is why we don’t have slaves nor have sex with 10 year old. We have evolved because we found out about the history of sex. If we don’t speak about them then we might be doomed to repeat it.

Despite the inappropriateness of David's feelings for young Merrick, I did like how the David, Aaron and Merrick relationship dynamics mirrored the trio from the first book, Louis, Lestat and Claudia. I also enjoyed getting more of a glimpse into some actual witchcraft in this book, which I found really lacking from the Mayfair Witches trilogy.

I enjoyed Merrick through and through it was a breath of fresh air with the lore of the Mayfair witches and it felt like it was going back to Interview with the vampire in terms of tone and atmosphere with Louis's quest for Claudia and I found Merrick herself to be a welcome addition with her family history and a short story of David Talbot as the mortal elder supervisor of the Talamasca and the ghost story theme of the book a definite 4/5 for me, I only wished it was a longer book 💯

@jtsbrown754 I don't really mean duds. I actually like all of them too. More so, "Blood and Gold", "Blackwood Farm" and "Blood Canticle" aren't super relevant to where Rice goes with the final three books.

@jtsbrown754 in reference to the "aliens" I initially hated what I felt like was a ret-con of my favorite book in the series "Memnoch" but after reading it a second time I really vibed with the future Rice created for her vampires.

In all fairness, I'm quick to discard any story that heavily includes Louis. I personally find him to be the most irritating and obnoxious of AR's characters. Alternatively, I absolutely adore David. So, when this book came out, I was excited at the opportunity to learn more of David's story (both before and after the body swap). This tale gave me a bit of what I hoped for. But, it was ultimately disappointing. I recall the whole thing reading more like a prologue than a novel. Your review of the book was more enthralling than the book itself. Tbh, I didn't remember 90% of what you retold. I did, however, recall the odd infatuation that David seemed to have with an underage Merrick. It was all so very Don't Stand So Close to Me (by Sting & The Police). It was so unlike his character that I immediately assumed that Merrick had subtly bewitched him because she had a child's crush.

Wait… does this take place before the events of tale of the Body Thief? If so, how come Favid is in contact with Louis? He doesn’t meet him until after I thought? Or if it’s after Tale… then why is David human? He was forced into a new body and turned into a vampire… I’m so confused.

I just... want them to be normal for once? I mean I'd pay everything I own (which is precious little, but I'd gladly give it away) for a single Vampire Chronicles book that was just, Vampires who drink blood, tell us their stories and wreck a little havock, and no one is in love with no one, and nobody is looking at children inapropiately, and Anne, for once, does not spend literal parographs describing people's breasts, and there is no need to further complciate centuries-old toxic relationships 😂😂 I make it sound like I don't like the Chronicles, but I love them to bits, that is why I want them to be bloody normal just for once and not make me feel massively uncomfortable every three paragraphs 😂

@@diana2063 now that you mention it, I had never quite pondered that possibility... Anne always spoke of her childhood and adolescence as quite happy ones but, who knows?? Just as her grief over her daughter bled unto IWTV, maybe there was some unadressed trauma behind all the mess in her later work; I really hope not though. And also, same, I haven't read the Mayfair Witches but don't I wish I had stoped with the Vampire Chronicles after Queen of the Damned! Louis and Lestat fly away, all the other Vampires remain chilling in Miami until the end of eternity and no one ever, ever looks at a child improperly again, the end 🤣

Question: do witches retain their magical powers when turned to vampires in Anne Rice’s universe or no? Can’t seem to find an answer anywhere else. Thanks!
