Good stuff. Saying this as a VGA customer, this really makes make appreciate Wata's scale. It helps you understand the condition of the item way more than VGAs. I think VGA needs to get better at leveraging their 90 and above grades. Everything basically falls under 80+, 85, or 85+. Not enough granularity.

People should def inspect 85+ closely though, just like any 9.8 A+. They can easily have damage that is subjective to each collector as acceptable. There’s some truly unfortunate games floating around that probably don’t deserve those grades lol

I know what it’s called genius, I was being sarcastic. My point being are we buying video games to play them or look at them. Because if the latter then that’s not what I call collecting. How else can you explain why so many crappy PS2 games & PS1 games are worth $1000’s of dollars. They aren’t good yet ppl charge all this money for them because they’re allegedly rare, when in fact all of these games were massed produced with millions of copies in print. These ain’t comic books from the 1940’s, gimme a break

Because it’s hard to KEEP games sealed. The elements are harsh, no matter how you store it. That and games costing more then compared to now (inflation) means people didnt really go out to buy games to keep them new. Chances were, you are getting your money’s worth and opening that b. Also, some games came in cardboard people ripped open and threw away, making NEW old games VERY RARE

Not a fan of cracking that minish cap open but I’m fine with breaking opening those disc-based games. You’re more likely to get 9.8 from them. It definitely paid off here

This might be the best video ever made to understand the correlation between different grading companies. Big thanks. Now for my conclusions: 1- This hugely elevates the perception of anything VGA between 80 and 85+. They are on par with WATAS 9.6-9.8 range. 2- VGA 90 or upwards is god tier and not even perfects from wata or cgc should compete there.

My only caveat would be to not overestimate VGA stuff as a blanket statement because they also have some very "meh" 85 and 85+ stuff that would turn into like WATA 9.0/9.2. The best advice I can give is to just make sure you look closely at everything you're buying regardless of what the grade says! VGA 85 especially can mean many different varying types of wear and with cardboard especially, you can usually expect some creases to be present.

Is it still gradesmaxxing if you accidentally drive a knife through it while opening it? Would it ever be worth sending for a regrade in the previous slab? Or too much biasing? Like a 9.6 a++ cgc hoping for a 9.8 from wata?

A lot of people send in to the different companies still inside of a graded slab. I haven't heard that it makes a difference either way - the crackout process is supposed to be completely blind from the grading process, FWIW.

@GetTheGreg I've actually emailed wata asking them this very question. Here was my reply, "We currently do not have any crossover services, any games that are submitted in holders will be treated as raw submissions and cracked out. If you would like to have any dirt or stickers removed, you can absolutely add these on to your order and our team will fulfill everything as requested which may even raise the grade higher than expected." I just bought a DKC3 players choice that's a VGA 80. It has a price tag and security sticker on the wrap so I'm thinking that's why it graded so low. I'm going to pay for a cleaning and sticker removal and just ship it in VGA slab and see what happens. I'd just end up thrashing it with a butter knife.

@@RetroGamingLoser A big reason I want to send it graded already, is that I'm mostly a game boy/gbc/gba enjoyer. Which means cardboard. Which means it's extremely fragile. Even wrapping it in bubble wrap myself could crease a tiny dent or degradation in quality. Let alone shipping it to a grading company. While in the slab, it's basically fool-proof. The shipper would have to absolutely destroy the package, in which case shipping insurance would cover it. Sometimes I disagree with the grade, sometimes I want to cross a VGA game I bought because I hate how they don't separate seal and box. It's a terrible way of grading IMO.

I just sent in a bunch of steelbook games to be graded with VGA and nothing came back higher than an 85+. I ordered most of them direct from the company, not bought at Walmart or anything, and they've sat in protective cases on my shelf for a couple of years. I really expected VGA would give a couple of them a 90 since they look mint to me. Should I send them to CGC or something? I know WATA doesn't do steelbooks.

Crazy video... seldom, i buy sealed games on ebay , and the seller never tells me about a tear/rip in the shrinkwrap. I graded such games in the past but they never get high grades. But seeing your dragonball with such tear get an 9.8 is crazy. With VGA, usually a game with a tear will get vga 80/80+

Hey Greg. I have a 75+ VGA graded Sega Saturn Battlesport that I've been considering sending to WATA or CGC for quite some time thanks to you. All I can see is damage to the seal in the case. Do you think it's worth sending a 75+ in or is that too low? Thank you for your content.

So long as you're confident the case itself isn't cracked or faded at all, yea, you could cross it to CGC or WATA and potentially still get a 9.8 but your seal would be like a B+

I don't understand the whole grading thing in the first place: If something is factory sealed, then it's factory sealed. Sure, sometimes the wrapping may not be "perfect" but the numbering thing...just seems pointless. If you can in-case/protect something factory sealed on your own, without having it graded, then do it

Seems like you understand perfectly given you also explained that factory sealed games can vary in condition haha. Having it graded helps to communicate the condition it's in while also maintaining said condition, and providing a second opinion on authenticity. If you just want to buy and use a generic box protector instead, go for it. You won't see me care either way!

Funny you should say that I’ve gotten many A seal ratings on games and none literally none of them had a rip even a small ones I’ve literally only sent one game out of 200+ that had a rip and it was a big one. They are def tougher on seals than some would think tho. I’m shocked you got an 9.6 A+ on MC I have a game with the same spot damage that got a 9.2 and I’ve gotten 9.8 on ones that had almost as much wear as the 9.2 so it’s all to be taken with a grain of salt!

Hopefully I can get a 9.8 on the Grim Fandango PC Jewel Case I sent in, they gave me a 9.4 last time and I don’t know why, the jewel case had no damage.

Greetings, I always find these cross videos extremely interesting! Seeing how both companies rate the same game is always interesting to me! But just because wata has a different focus when it comes to grading conditions, I have to say they just never come close to vga! If you consider that at wata the highest of all things is 85+=9.8a+. Copies higher than this 85+ are simply in an ulta good condition, you just can't say that about wata

Over time, how off do you think population reports will become due to this? Or do you think the number's negligible? I got a WATA I wanted to send to CGC and realized I had one of the few graded, and if I cracked it, there would actually be a fifth fewer than what people would see in their database.

The Pop reports will inevitably screwed up by stuff like this or people re-sending to the same company. You can report broken slabs or removed games to the respective companies, but a lot of people just don't bother. In general, Pop reports will always skew slightly higher than reality because of this.

Yea, every population report is overrepresented due to people smashing and resubmitting. You can report the broken cases to the respective companies, but many people do not bother.

"Grade-maxing" hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. But yeah, with prominent flaws it's nice to be able to clearly differentiate, because collectors have different preferences. From what I've heard it's almost 50/50 between those who value better game condition over seal condition, and vice versa. The separate scale helps especially when buying via HA, where they don't have pics of the sides of the games lol. That Sunshine must be a keeper, right? GG! Btw. Do you notify VGA when you've crossed these, to help not mess up the pop report?

People don’t act like Sunshine is a bad game (well, some people might say that). What IS commonly said about Sunshine is that it’s weird and feels like development was rushed… because it was. And no joke, the blue coins almost ruin that game for people that enjoy 100% titles. It also only has like 6 worlds to explore.

@@GetTheGreg I agree but that alone really hurts the game imo. I have 100% every Mario game pretty much ever made. Most of them, I’ve done multiple times…. except for Sunshine. I did it one time, when the game came out, using a guide to help me figure out wtf was going on with the blue coins (as they will only appear during certain missions in specific levels). But the FLUUD thing is pretty cool. And at the time, the graphics for the water was amazing.

Oh yea for sure, that's an HD upscale which is nice, but fan mods had done that years ago for Sunshine and even allowed 60fps while doing it. I'm talking something more along the lines of a proper remake/remaster, akin to what TTYD just got (maybe not that drastic, but as an example).

You mention that these are real life examples of what a vga grade would cross to however that is not very accurate. I assume you carefully screened these before cracking them open. If you noticed that the minish cap had a major crease you would probably not have cracked that open for example. So this is more accurate as an example of what could be possible, not what would be a realistic expectation.

I think you’re missing the point. He’s more showing how WATA 9.0-9.8s fall into 80+/85+ which are not a very accurate way to show a game’s true grade because of how VGA combines seal and item condition into one grade. Of course he’s mostly showing examples of games that have potential to be a 9.8 A+ so you can “grade max” lol. Nothing is guaranteed but it’s a very good risk.

I played sunshine when it first came out, and beat in short order. It kinda sucked. It was the first really easy mario game. So easy it just seemed like a walk through and ruined it, to an extent. I didn't play galaxy because of it til years later.

I really liked 3d world, played it with my daughter on the wii u. fun game, had some tough parts w 2 player, trying to keep on the same page. sunshine is just a lesser mainline mario game to me. I wasn't crazy about odyssey either.

@@GetTheGreg Good Question! I sold a few of my GBC boxes sealed with PSA above 9 to 10. They put triple prices above depending on rare quality, years, popular, and how many made left, etc. My Zelda oracina one I got for $150 then put on upgrade gave me 8.0. So I actually smashed it then tried again finally at 9.5. I sold it for $1100.00.

It only took CGA decades plus the entire length of the pandemic to make their website look like it wasn't made in the 1990s. They've had years to copy how PSA/WATA/CGC do their pop reports, and the UI is just passable. Then, they don't seem to understand that variation is not sufficient to capture both printing #, and country. The only perk they had was the jumbo containers to accommodate consoles - I just wish they'd make the tags a little bigger for console/big sets. WATA's getting investigated for racketeering, and I'd still rather use them than VGA.

If I had these games in these conditions or any other game, I would rip them open and play them. If I'm gonna buy a game to just look at, then I might as well just look at pictures online. Video games were supposed to be played. LIBERATE THE PLASTIC! ENJOY THE THINGS YOU OWN! That game you are keeping locked up, someone else could be enjoying. Not just looking at it.

Graded games are a scam...I opened a graded gamecube game and the paint on the game was peeling right off.....

@@GetTheGreg guarantee you some of your graded gamecube games disc paint is chipping away..but you will never know because you guys don't open it.... mine was metal gear solid "twin snakes" ... it actually happens alot....look it up
