@@TheIggy861 the new bmw 6 cylinders are surprisingly good on fuel. Even the s55 engine is good on juice.

@@TheIggy861 Well that's a lie :D I drove a m140 for about 2500 kilometers just two months before the Corona crisis hit and just bought a 8v S3 hatchback last week and drove similiar kilometers in Germany... S3 is WAY more fuel efficient than that m140 x-drive at least, both are fun cars tho! I do not want to drive a non x-drive m140 O_o

Unfortunately the second you add the slightest amount of power, the clutch goes. I’ve driven the manual S3 and it’s a very enjoyable drive. Just something to note

I agree it’s a must for these cars though, clutch was slipping it’s stock clutch when I bought it, hence I had the dealer upgrade it first

@@stobsie winter time, you mean when we get our two days of snow.......if that. Everyone talks about winter when talking down the m140i, normally suggests nothing else to say. My response is, if your a crap driver buy s4/golf r it'll save you from looking like an amateur

So you mentioned in previous videos that you bought the 86 as a daily driver, but now you've said you're finding a car to replace it as a 'project' car? Which is it? I'm sure you're going to make more videos of testdriving other cars but if you do go for this S3, it'll mean you have two hatchbacks - you might as well go for a two seater sportscar thats midengined or frontengined RWD, so that you can get a different experience from your M140i. Would've been nice that you got a facelifted 86/BRZ built from 2018 onwards, which had a more reliable FA20 engine.

A S You’re acting like it’s a PDK or something, it’s nothing special. He’s owned a Golf R with a DSG before so it’s not like he doesn’t know what a DSG is like.

ImSJPC I’m referring to sound as opposed to performance - obviously it’s not a PDK, has he driven a facelift model? My S3 pops and crackles on the downshift - purely referring to sound. The manual also doesn’t bang on the upshift...

I had a stock £50k spec S3 Cabrio S-Tronic. It was luxury inside and the fun was in straight line performance and hood down fun. But after 4 years I changed to stock Orange Edition GT86. Now I love the 86 so much that I really can't think of another car I want!! I really don't miss the turbo performance, love the feel of naturally aspirated, RWD, manual all day long.. priceless!

I have a manual Golf R, which I have had remapped and of course had to upgrade the clutch. It is a Sachs sintered clutch and though a little heavier on the foot (which I actually prefer as it feels substantial), there is absolutely no judder or noise or difficulty with daily commute. If anything I prefer the clutch when driving normal to the standard clutch. Look into this type of clutch if you are thinking of getting a performance manual hot hatch.

For a project car, you can’t go wrong with a fiesta. Both mk7 and mk8 are cracking options for “projects”. Plus will be a cheaper option when compared to this 😇

TTS would be a good option. Better interior, slightly lighter and sportier driving position, plus you can get them in manual - although rare :) - Welcome to test drive mine ;)

Do it and actually tune it, just got my golf R back after doing a turbo tech v5 and supporting mods, 420hp at all 4 wheel! It’s so fun to drive!

How about a Mk7 Fiesta ST180. I've just recently purchased one for the fun factor and it does not disappoint! Has fantastic tuning capabilities, very reliable when tuned correctly and it's capable for every day use as a daily. No brainer really. You're Welcome to try mine in it's current Standard form. How about an S2000 as the project car? Getting on a bit so more befitting of being an actual project, bulletproof reliability and since you're after a manual it also has the best gearchange of all time. Won't lose much/any money on it either (other than the mods!).

@@jamescarson6681 You're right about 1 of those, congrats👏 I've always been more into bikes so thats where my moneys gone, however I do still have a bmw 325d (3.0). Nothing special at all, and it STILL pulls away from a GT86. That means its slow as shit 😅 but if a gt86 is all you can afford then go for it buddy👍

Exactly that, insurance renewal came back as £5k+ through no fault of my own it increased. Too many BMWs getting stolen/ crashed :/

May as well have kept the Golf R? I would say the M140i should be the project car to go crazy with (which you've already commenced). Get the M140i to a crazy level, and drive on weekends and have the S3 or Golf R or something similar for daily duties. I believe a project car should be rear wheel drive, and unable to get traction in at least the first 3 gears ;)

What about an Abarth? You could get a Series 4 facelift Competizione for about 11-12k, or a pre facelift Series 3 Comp for about 8k

Agree with the consensus that an S3 makes little sense given your BMW. You want something significantly different. MX5 or if budget permitting, on older Porsche (996 or a 987). Easily see change from 20k. Change from 10k on an MX5. If a project car, the MX5 would be perfect. Great manual too.

My opinion is the the bmw should really be the daily you’re after - auto box, plenty of power and easy enough to drive every day. The ‘project car’ you’re looking for would then make more sense as a track toy, something you can mess with manual boxed car. But at the end of the day its your money so.....

Get something a bit older maybe best of both worlds. A MK4 Golf R32 with the VR6 would be something else, they were pretty much hand built as well. Bags more character than the newer Golfs. Or even a MK5 Golf GTI Edition 30 can be had for sub £10K with lots of things to be done and I believe a K04 Turbo on those too. The MK5 was deemed a return to form for VW, after the MK3 and MK4 which were heavy and more GT car like rather than sporty. and isn’t far off a MK7 GTI in terms of power, stock. Would make more content for people who can’t necessarily afford a new performance car. To be quite fair I don’t really watch for the BMW content, as good as it is. Either way you’re doing a great job mate

I'm not convinced the S3 is the way to go... A little dull, doesn't sound great either imo. It has a manual gearbox, that's about the only good thing... Each to their own of course, whatever makes you happy!

Luke definitely got to have a I30 N Performance not many have done a huge amount of content with them. In terms of tuning and mods.

How about a diesel VW Caddy van ? Cheap to run, plenty of scope for mods.You can't run a modified m140i or any other "performance car" and think you can run it on the cheap, you want power and speed etc you have to pay the price all the way !! Cant see an S3 will be cheaper to run from any angle you look from, I've got an RS3 and it will never do 35mpg cos I have a very heavy right foot and its definitely not cost effective to your wallet !

The dials are the same in the facelift car if you dont have the virtual cockpit. The exhaust on this particular car is too loud imo.

Your M140 isn't a million miles different from a S3. You need something totally different - I (M240i owner, last car a Boxster) used a Ford Escort Van as a mile muncher (2.5k miles per month) to avoid stacks of miles on my 'decent' car (still managed 18k per annum though in them). Buy a cheap heap, run it on chip fat, smash the miles on it. But please don't get the same style again!

We’re all waiting, yawning, to see how a 6sp manual rates against a 7 sp DSG..... how might that end? Suggest you Go RS3, or A45 if you must.😀.

I think it doesn't make sense alongside the m140 even if the s3 is manual. A smaller hatchback or a lightweight roadster will make more sense IMO. Cool video though 👍.

The s3 is not really a sensible alternative for a project car, in my opinion anyway. Think this video is more because you could get your hands on a s3 and needed to make some content.

Got my s3 a stage 1 not upgraded the clutch yet but I guess I better do it soon mines is a manual to pretty disappointed losing the launch control option but that’s the only downside

I may be in the minority here.....but I'm really not fussed on that exhaust sound, it cheapens the car imo. The s3 has to be in stronic, it just suits the premium feel of the car. If your complaining about fuel costs sell the 140, and also why have two cars? As much as I love my s3 for everyday usable performance I wouldnt have it as a second car, Id want something more raw/fun.

What's the point in having an M140i and an s3? Also, of all the sick project cars our there .......mx5, gt86 post 2013, civic hatch, s2000.....a perfect condition s3 is not really a project car. So many other more modifiable and fun cars out there
