01:30 Why move from Manjaro KDE to Fedora GNOME?
02:35 My Experience with Vanilla GNOME
07:38 Switching to GNOME Apps
09:38 My Experience with Fedora
14:15 Will I stick to Fedora?
This GNOME here didn't come with any extensions. Coming from my "mac-like" layout with global menu and dock, it took me a very short time to adapt.
All it took to be proficient was re-wiring my brain to use the top left as a hot corner instead of the top right. I added an extension, the app indicators one. I also added a second extension, letting me switch from dark theme to light theme.
On GNOME, my apps don't have menubars, and so a global menu isn't needed.
Now, in terms of workflow, the workspaces, I now use a lot more, thanks to the easy access through the activities view. On KDE, I tended to only use one workspace, but 2 activities, one for work, and one for play.
Basically, I really like the simplicity of GNOME, and the default workflow suits me really well.
The default Adwaita look is really bland to me. It's all really, really grey, and the rare blue accents don't make it a less glacial experience. The icon theme is really nice, apart from files and folders. These manilla beige folders are not pretty, and the file mimetypes lack a lot of constrast.
The dark adwaita theme is much better.
Another issue, is the lack of integration of Nextcloud.
I also find the system menu pretty lackluster, especially for sound.
I moved from Kmail to Geary, which was a fantastic transition: just setting up an account is night and day. In Geary, it takes 2 minutes, in Kmail, I had to fumble through the enormous settings to even get my folders to show up.
GNOME Calendar is much simpler and nicer looking than Korganizer, although Kalendar, with a "K" seems like a more than worthy replacement, with its nextcloud tasks integration.
The GNOME software app blows Discover out of the water in the looks department, and in the legibility of the information it displays. It also handles updates better, in my opinion, with more detail and a nicer interface.
The rest of my app roster is mainly made out of elementary OS Apps, which,, unfortunately, don't look too good on GNOME: they don't use the elementary OS icon theme, or the elementary OS GTK theme, which makes them look quite ugly and weird.
The GNOME apps themselves, though, I really like. Some people might find them too limiting, and that's fine, but I don't have super complex needs in my graphical apps, and I prefer the simple look and feel combined with the features I need.
Now, let's talk about my experience with Fedora. The installer is still a horribly designed piece of software.
Sure, it does its job, but in terms of UX? It's bad. really bad.
I needed DNF once, to install my Nvidia drivers.
I also quite enjoyed the way Fedora handles updates: you install them from GNOME Software, and while app updates apply automatically, system updates will install at the next reboot.
Now, for the issues, because there were some.
First, Fedora 35 comes with Pipewire for audio, and while that system has a lot of promise, it has issues, especially with apps depending on ALSA.
I had no audio playback in Audacity, and Davinci resolve had super stuttery audio that made it unusable
The main, big unsolved issue, though, is bluetooth. I could NOT get it to work right on Fedora. I use an MX Master 3 and a bluetooth keyboard, and these keep going to sleep, even while in use, and sometimes fail to reconnect.

@@fulvioleo8271 can’t speak for OP, but Fedora has been really polishing up the desktop and been the main Gnome distro for a while now. It has the best balance of “user friendliness/noob friendly, don’t need the terminal” and “Linux power user” out there. It can really be whatever you want it to be and it really showcases the strengths of Linux.

@@fulvioleo8271 Many of the technologies used by most distributions nowadays, including Ubuntu, were born in Fedora, almost all immutable distros are based on Fedora technologies, which says a lot about this distro. It's a shame there aren't more distributions like this, the Linux ecosystem is full of filler distributions, most of which do not contribute anything to the desktop, i.e distros that only change the wallpaper and not much else. The funny thing is that making such a distro is not that difficult, it's enough for a new distro to use OSTree and universal technologies and it already contributes more than 95% of the Ubuntu derivatives.

I did a lot of distro hopping for a while - also because of my small KZfaq channel. But for three years now, Fedora has been my only distribution again. It's also going back to the roots - Red Hat Linux was my entry into Linux in 1997. Fedora offers by far the best mix between topicality and stability. No other distro can match this. The community is also big and with Red Hat a big player in the background. Some may see this as a disadvantage and prefer pure community projects, for me this is the absolute advantage. Oh yes right, anaconda.... It's layout is just weird. Really really weird... But dnf is actually really good, it might be slower than apt, but it can do so much more! It doesn't just stop when your ssh session drops (unlike apt........), you can easily just download rpms with one command, including dependencies, you don't have to always run apt update as it does it automatically if it needs to, it's always non-interactive(!!!) And you can just enable disabled repos for one command.

GNOME is pretty awesome, smooth and it works well. I like the interface concepts which are unique and well fleshed out. That being said, it's very much not something I'd use on a daily basis. Extensions are also a must as the plain vanilla just isn't configurable enough. Really just personal preference. As for Fedora, I could see it working really well in offices (that's not a put down). It would be great for things like admin and accounting work. I keep a vm of fedora just to play with, myself, but I don't really do anything practical with it.

I think gnome looks pretty awesome, but I just like the customizability of kde too much. It's amazing how much i can do while sticking to officially supported stuff. (Not saying gnome is bad, just that I prefer KDE. the simplicity and out of box look/feel of gnome is amazing for someone starting with linux)

This isn't intended as a criticism, but I came over to Linux from Windows 7 a few years ago now as a very non-tech user. I was, and still am, a basic mouse point and click person. I don't use workspaces at all. Any app I use regularly I simply add to the panel and minimise or open it as necessary. That said, I don't use my OS for 'work' purposes, it's just for recreation and hobby purposes. When I transitioned to Linux, I personally found the Gnome DE by far the most frustrating DE of all... still do really. But, I can understand that people who use their computer for 'work' and who use lots of keyboard shortcuts probably could and would enjoy Gnome. I just don't think Gnome is something that an average, new to Linux from Windows, person would use or enjoy. Just my opinion though :) I'm also pretty old and set in my ways :)

I also (used to) have an issue similar to what you described with your bluetooth card with wifi (intel AX201) on my laptop (Lenovo 82BG) on Fedora KDE, the wifi randomly slowing down (to abt a few kb/s max, thus seemingly going to sleep?) after some minutes into the OS when the signal strength is rather low, not reactivating when relocating the laptop to have better wifi connection. didn´t happen in the last few days though, so maybe it was fixed sometime i guess? but just as described in the video, no one else seemed to have that problem when running other distros, so i couldn´t really find support online.

Did you install Nvidia closed driver and cuda? Then run the resolve file you download from the official site. It will install inside /opt/resolve. Then check /etc/openCL folder and see if anything beside nvidia present there. Delete those files(mesa and pocl). Keep the nvidia file there. Then try running Resolve from the terminal to see if any package needs to be installed.

I'm 100% with you on the Fedora Installer, I was installing it onto a free partition on my computer, and the whole time I was sweating bullets because I couldn't tell if I was going to wipe out the other partitions that I had with all sorts of data on it, or my other operating systems. dnf worked fine for me, but I was fighting having Fedora do automatic updates, seems like multiple GNOME desktop based distros have that happen completely automatically now, and no matter how many times you disable packagekit there is always something else running on a timer to do the update anyways.

I had a similar transition this days. Tried Fedora but did not enjoy rpm life. Now I am driving a Ubuntu server and manually added vanilla gnome. On 20.10 there was a small bug on the install that is easily fixable, and now my machine works as a charm. I had issues in the past with Pop and Arch, with random freezes after kernel upgrades (ssd related it seems) that just are not there on Ubuntu. My machine is also rocking a set of Linux containers and has a very particular network configuration (and netplan was a blessing on this regard). Overall, after 10 years away from Ubuntu, I can say it is the distro that makes my life easier.

I have run with Fedora 35 for a while on my XPS9710 and it was not a pleasant experience. I found the interface clumsy, the applications are hard to find. What works for one, does not always work for another, I am running Manjaro with the latest 5.16rc4 kernel. Within virtual box I can test out some other distros, got really interested in MX Linux but the only distro that has the NVidia drivers properly under control is Manjaro. That is not to say there are no difficulties with that as well (sof-firmware for instance). I still think that there is a movement that is intensifying in the battle for the desktop. If we had only known in 1992.... lol On the one hand I like Plasma but also the simplicity of Xfce so I will keep testing and every now and then allow a new install. Love your insights Nick.

Fedora tries to stay very FOSS out of the box, for the extra bits, just go to RPM Fusion and enable their free/non-free repos. I wish they would make this as simple as checking a box in the installer and/or Gnome Software, but they don't... Thankfully, it's still a braindead simple process.
