Michael Jackson is one of the most famous singers in American music history.
But unlike a lot of other vocalists who keep their vocal routine secret, we actually have a recording of Michael Jackson's daily routine.
This week, I attempted his daily vocal warm up. Here were the results....
Videos I referenced:
Male Vocal Warm Up: • HIT HIGH Notes with Po...
Female Vocal Warm Up: • HIT HIGH Notes with PO...

Michael had 3.5 octaves (F#2 to C#6), which for a professional male singer is good but for a trained tenor is pretty typical. For a male, however, IS striking that he was in the fifth octave all the time.

I warm up by singing songs now. When you start to get very familiar with your voice you just know what you can do straight away. I finally got "inalare la voce" in muscle memory. For me I go through a lyric sheet and see where crescendo and decrescendo needs to be and if I want vibrato or not on certain words. When you get to that level its how you want to present the song to someone. I use to not be able to do an entire song at all and it took me two years to get to this point. There are no set in stone exercises that will get you there. It's hard work and dedication plus a good teacher. When it finally clicked. You can add runs here and there, do some vibrato or you can make it beautiful by la voce. It's being you, and doing what you want on the song. Exercises are just exercises in the end. I learned this the hard way. Students need to learn how to use that exercise in a song and incorporate it in the music. I was very monkey minded and went in a loop over and over trying to get "mixed" voice. Then I realized wait, I have it then I started to just open up lyric pages and sing the songs without backing tracks. For new comers it will take a while, just be patient with yourself.

For anyone listening to Michael Jackson's vocal warm ups (with Seth Riggs), use it as a guide when you're warming up. Modify it to your liking and adjust it according to your vocal register. I've tried this warm up back when I was in choir and little did I know that these warm ups were beyond my skill level to the point that I got winded every time I did it. Haha. It goes to show that Michael Jackson was a gifted vocalist and we should be thankful he shared his gift of singing and songwriting to the entire world.

This is objectively untrue. I love MJ's voice, I think he was amongst the top 10 vocalists in documented human history. THE best? No. Fanaticism is stupid, and a sign of a weak mind. There is no such thing as THE best vocalist. Michael wouldn't be able to sing operatic bass, for instance, but there's singers out there who are unbelievably talented at that sort of thing. And yet none of them can sing pop baritone, generally. So it goes. There is no "best" singer. Every singer, no matter how amazing they are, is unique. The idea of comparing them, outside of covers, is such a foolish game that should have ceased to be played years ago.

Seth is actually an excellent singer. He does have some vocal damage, and I think that shows in the timber of his voice. But, mae no mistake, I've heard him sing a song dynamically, soulfully, and played to the audience. He also has a very different voice from Michael's I believe. He has spend years doing vocal exercises with singers, and a warm up is not like singing a song. Seth has also done vocal therapy for people. He knows his way around the voice.

@@mikehopkins4040 well that's a bad comparison, chickenpox checking with vocal mastery, but yeah you don't necessarily need to have chickenpox to know its symptoms but you have to have chickenpox mastery to know how to treat it the best way, what I only mean to say actually is that if he's not better than some students and admits it that's ok, that would happen anyways unless he was a vocal master, but saying that a coach doesn't have to be better than the student, that's just wrong. It's way more adequate and appropriate for the society if its coaches and teachers know and master pretty much everything there is about their specialty

I've often wondered if singing teachers need to be able to sing well to teach well. Can you be a good football manager without knowing how to play football well? I've had a few singing teachers who are really excellent at the exercises they give and yet, translating that into songs, they just sound "ok".
@ra6od92
@ra6od92 2 жыл бұрын
Singing teachers need to sing well is not the same being a manager without knowing football you do more thinking for the people the do all the muscle part, in singing you need to teach an individual not just how to sing but how to sing with proper technique, what you should feel when doing any technique, is a lot of muscle memory to be honest but remember that if you have a good singing teacher that is not just making you do scales but teach you how to breath, what you should feel when breathing, exhale, keep your throat open and open it back up after being closed on a consonant, when you find the good one that tells you "if you feel this while singing your are doing it wrong, you should feel this and that" and then going from there you are gonna grow, but if you have bunch of sessions where you only go to do scales like "meow meow meow meow, gee gee gee gee without knowing if you are doing it properly you are gonna just sound "ok" or not even okey, singing a song is not the same that singing scales, you have to put in flavor, vibrato, rasp, belting, etc and for that you need a good vocal coach for that, one that helps you get the proper muscle memory so rock every singing style if you want without losing and hurting your voice, still waiting for this coach to actually sing something.

For me, a good teacher, is someone that see your potential, and help you, do the best you can with your instrument/voice. I saw this video 2years ago, and I was: this is a great connection and trust between the signer and his vocal coach. First, I need to trust the teacher , no judgment, just being a team. 🍪 And after, only, I can give my best. A good teacher knows you and when it is the good time to push and ask more, to make you progress 🤓

In fairness Seth Riggs is 93. He sounds and looks decades younger. I would half-agree with what you said about vocal coaches not having to be better than their student. I think that can only be true if the coach's voice was damaged in some way. But there's a difference between being able to sing with the exception that something went wrong with your voice, versus never having learned how to sing but still thinking you can teach others.

Very sad that it is this way after his death, but one of the best things ever for Michael's image has been the treasure trove of candid footage, leaked content and audio revealing the man he was. He became too alien to people and it really swayed public opinion when it mattered most. It was hard to know whether he was just saying what people wanted to hear or understand what might have been going on behind the scenes. People only saw snippets of his life. Without social media the tabloids were people's point of contact with Michael and the handful of televised interviews he did.

"just because you don't have the key to unlock your own chains, doesn't mean you can't hand me the key to unlock mine" or something to that effect something I heard not too long ago about teaching & mentoring. dunno just jumped into my head when you were talking about Seth not being a better singer than Michael fucking Jackson lol

Transform? No. A premise is Seth Riggs' "bridging"! Bridging has helped me climb the scale beyond my perceived Passaggio.

Lately every single trainer I try to work with, does not "believe in" warm up exercises or going through the scales. They ONLY want to work on improving a song. I don't understand it

It depends on natural vocal timbre(tone of your voice) light, bright, Clear = Tenor, Rich, a little Deep, warm, velvety= Baritone very dark and deep, Dense, heavy ,a little bit scary sound = Bass
@deathrattle216
@deathrattle216 2 жыл бұрын
@@garfieldch9895 Anybody can sound tenorish or baritoneish based on placement. "Natural" timbre is a stretch. Operatic tenors using a low larynx would sound like baritones to people who don't know anything. The high baritone (most males) and tenor dividing line is far more subjective than people think it is,

Great singers, guitar players, athletes, intellectuals don't usually make good teachers. Teaching requires a lot of thought and pedagogy.

A reason Seth might not have given the bratty exercise to Michael is because Michaels voice already had a lot of that bratty and nasally tone to it, and if he added them his voice it would be too much, if you know what I mean
