Apple has offered cellular connectivity on the Apple Watch for almost six years now. But it’s a hard option to justify. So to find out who it’s for, Jonathan use one as his ONLY mobile device for an entire week.

Honestly, I think carrying an Apple Watch and a small digital camera around would be the ideal situation for me personally. You still retain communication, you have non-distracting entertainment such as music and podcasts (even games and general applications if you're willing to), and you can still take photos to remember the moment. Kinda sucks that they're a seperate plan from your main one, though.

I've had an Apple Watch 7 for some time now, and I've been using it as my primary device. I think it's wonderful, since I never used my phone often to begin with, and I don't use social media. A few things to note if you plan on doing the same: - Definitely get the Series 7 or newer. The full keyboard is a game changer for sending texts, but I highly recommend swipe texting rather than pressing each individual key. Also the fast charging is nice, as it allows me to charge it while in the shower or doing chores after wearing it for a full day and night. - Bring AirPods with you so you can take calls. It also allows you to listen to music/podcasts in the car if your watch can't connect to your car. - Take into consideration which music application you use. I use KZfaq Music since I pay for KZfaq Premium, but YT Music doesn't allow me to listen to my downloaded music on my watch without my iPhone nearby. Spotify and Apple Music will allow you to listen to your downloaded music straight from your watch. - Get a case. You'll be surprised how many times your watch will collide with walls, doors, rocks, or whatever else. I found an Otterbox case on Amazon for maybe $20 or $25. - Invest in different watch bands, but don't overspend on the Apple bands. I recommend having 4 bands for casual/everyday, athletic, sleep, and special occasions. Having the different bands will give some longevity to each band, as wearing the same watch band every day will wear it down from the overuse and the elements, and they also stink a bit from your sweat. - Learn some skills to help compensate the watch's shortcomings. For example, instead of using the watch to create a shopping list (which is tedious in my opinion), do research on memory techniques. It adds another layer of "detoxing" from technology by removing dependency on tools, and it turns errands into a fun game. I mean, sure, you can write your shopping list on pen and paper, but what's the point of leaving your phone at home if you're going to bring another item to replace it? The watch declutters your mind and your pockets. - In those moments where you do need multiple tools, buy a small backpack. Something between the size of a fanny pack and a school backpack.

The Apple Watch cellular is also great for grandma or grandpa, it can literally save their life. I’ve heard so many stories of elderly people falling and breaking a leg or thigh and laying on the ground for a day or two until a relative comes to check on them. The fall detection and 911 could have avoided the laying in pain on the ground in your own piss and $h!t for a couple days. For the price and that piece of mind I think it’s 100% worth it if you got an older relative living alone.

When I moved, I left my iPhone at my old house, but with my SE I was able to do navigation, calls, and some messages. It definitely has limitations and if I was buying a watch now, I'd go for the 8. But I like the fact that I can just leave my phone on the couch if I need to take out the trash or check the mail. Plus the built in ringer to find my phone when I so carelessly loose it.. That's pretty good too.

Back with my iPhone Ten I was getting it repaired and got to experience the cellular only watch experiment. It was nice to have GPS and receive all my texts, calls, and emails but it was still lacking of course. It is possible to do but short term. I just felt like because it was lacking in the areas I needed my phone at times it was frustrating. It did make me realize that I do not need my phone as much and has since allowed me to have my phone on me or around me much less over the years.

Aussie here, my SE watch is on its own plan separate from my phone, with a $5 a month cost for number sharing. My main untethered use is to walk my dog. I can still be reached, but I have that hour or so a day where I can be out in the world and not have to deal with notifications etc. It’s also great on long train trips where I can keep track of the time so I know when my stop is, but I can stow my phone away and just enjoy the scenery. You can also download games onto the watch. Even if it’s just a simple one, it’ll keep you occupied if you’re really bored.

I upgrade my Watch every year for the small improvements in health tracking (my parents died from suddenly occurring health conditions when I was a kid so I like having the latest health functionality, just in case). Last year, I decided to go for the cellular model. I figured I'd see if I use it over a year and the truth is, I barely have. But again, it's a nice bit of peace of mind. Plus, there was one time when I had to rush out to buy something from a shop that was about to close. When I got there, I realised I'd left my phone, wallet and keys at home. I'd driven there. My watch can do the keyless entry for my car, my house (smart lock) and I can pay.

Excellent video! I’ve been going mostly Apple Watch only for years now and wouldn’t go back. I definitely recommend going at least with the Series 7 as fast charging and the swipe keyboard are complete game changers for the Apple Watch only experience! Apple Watch Ultra is definitely a big step up again because you don’t need to worry about the battery life anymore whatsoever. Depending on where I go, I usually also carry a Sony ZV-1 to take pictures and when I think I might need to get some work done, I take a cellular iPad as well. I have a few videos going over this setup on my channel, if you’re curious. Definitely give this challenge another go by combining your iPad Mini only challenge with the Apple Watch only challenge. That’s the sweet spot in my experience. Cheers :)

I have been daily driving my Apple Watch 4 cellular for last 3 years now and my use case has been to go mostly for grocery shopping with just the watch and AirPods Pro. There were instances where I did forget my phone when going to work, but I made thru it only because I always have my chotech battery bank for Apple Watch with me. Interesting that I didn’t see Jonathan mentioning about the challenges with keeping the cellular watch powered up the entire day.

I don't think I could go purely watch for the various reasons mentioned - but I will say, when I'm out and about I generally try to be pretty present. I don't look at my phone walking, we have no cell service in the subway so I tend to not look at it there; and if I'm with family/friends, I try to be present. My phone is for times when I'm by myself, or company has left and others have gone to sleep or something like that.

Nice! I think the cellular makes perfect sense when you want to 'detox' in smaller doses. I can imagine going for walks with just the watch (along with Airpods, and perhaps my trusty little Fuji XT20) and enjoying it much more by sheer virtue of being connected but not distracted
@rrteppo

It is great for day hikes because you leave the phone in the car, and you then are carrying around less stuff. I also like it better for dates or hanging out with friends/family. You have zero temptation to look at your phone to escape awkward downpoints in conversation, and you don't get weird looks if you feel your watch vibrate and you check that then if you check your phone with a date/ at your grandparent's. Since it's considered more normal to check a watch. I had less enjoyment leaving my phone behind for the gym because I am already indoors and sitting, so the only difference was slight inconvenience swapping playlists/podcasts.

I did this same experiment a few years ago with AW4. I wanted to reduce my screen time. It was liberating! But for me, the battery life killed the experience. Series 4 makes it half a day on cellular and then has to recharge. I ended up keeping my phone with me albeit in a backpack to keep from pulling it out. Worked ok. I would love for Apple to one day make the AW a standalone product with all day battery life. I would get rid of my phone then. For now, keeping my 12 mini around :)

I would not go for a cellular Apple Watch alone, only because I use the iPhone’s camera constantly when I’m out and about. I have done something like this detox with my Series 6 wifi watch, however, and recommend it. @TimeLagGaming
@TimeLagGaming Жыл бұрын
@@gokkiyoutube yes, it’s honestly a pain in the ass but just the initial set up. you have to have somebody you know with an iPhone add you to their family sharing or the other way around but they have to be a parent or guardian in the family. Once they’re added you have to pair the watch with their phone. From there you can activate it. Once the watch is paired and set up you can leave the family sharing. You only have to pair back to the original iPhone to update which I’ve only done once. It’s really meant for kids which is why it’s a hassle and you have to jump through hoops. Apple really needs to make it accessible for everyone and not complicated. Caveats, Apple Pay doesn’t work unless you are part of a family shared Apple Card. Doesn’t matter I just carry my wallet with me. Also HomeKit doesn’t work for me on the watch because I’m the owner of the house so I cannot invite myself to the home on the watch, a glitch that Apple needs to fix. Again this mode is meant for kids and Apple also markets this mode for seniors too for some reason lol. But no other downsides besides that, still way more features than a dumb phone, I use navigation on it, play music (using a Bluetooth adapter you can pair it to play music in the car.) you can do podcast, voice memos, texting on the ultra is pretty easy with the full keyboard, swipe to text works really well, I find myself calling people way more and I text way less. You can also download apps that can be used with no phone. I have a Tesla app so I can use my phone as a key and control my car where I am directly from the watch. Native apps are really nice actually, just very few since the family set up thing is new. I’m probably going to do a video on this whole thing at some point. It’s so complicated but worth it if you’re aiming for a digital detox.

I have used both cellular and wifi Apple Watches and I would stick with cellular. I go for walks, grocery trips without my phone these days. My phone is always on silent cos I check all notifications on my watch and don’t have to dig my phone out of my pocket to see who’s calling; less distractions for me. Plus, with phone sizes getting bigger I’d rather have just a watch and an iPad if it were possible. One neat feature I LOVE is this: if you’re driving with Apple Maps and have your phone muted, you get a little vibration from the watch when there’s a turn or some action you have to do on your route. It’s hard to describe and it’s such a small thing but it makes driving just a tiny bit better for me. I’m sure the watch would be a standalone product in the future and the cellular would make more sense then.

Thank you so much for making this video. As a cellular apple watch owner I’ve had this idea bouncing around my skull for months. But I don’t make videos at all. After having an active plan for two years on the watch, I finally canceled it two months ago and honestly don’t really miss it. I realized I don’t really run, and never really commit to these “digital detoxes” as much as I would like. However, if I ever want to do a detox like that then I can always reactivate my plan and go for it :) Truly can do almost everything (including streaming podcasts and music) on the watch, but you must have Airpods. Kind of useless to talk on speaker phone. Also note that Uber removed their functionality for calling ubers from the Apple Watch.

My first Apple Watch was a S3 Celular. I wouldn't want to go back to non-cellular, simply because I have regular on-call shifts where I need to be reachable 24/7. However this also limits me. So when I figured out, how to activate it with my provider, it was awesome. I can go for an hour-long swim without the fear of missing an important call.

I accidentally discovered a use case for the cellular model fairly recently. For context, I own an iPhone SE (2nd Generation), an Apple Watch Ultra, & AirPods Pro (1st Generation), I drive a box truck to deliver mattresses in my company’s local market in east Texas…and I am VERY MUCH not a morning person. One morning, I had left my phone on its charger at home. …I left without my phone, and although I live close to my warehouse, it wasn’t worth it to run back home just to grab my phone. I had enough battery left in my watch to run the route without my phone, though. Maps worked as normal, and I was able to make calls with my AirPods just as easily as with my phone. It was actually fairly easy to adapt. I wouldn’t recommend it, as this is more taxing on the watch’s battery than when its paired iPhone is near, but it was nice to learn that I can rely on my watch to get me through a delivery route.

When I was looking for an Apple watch the major appeal was exactly to leave the iphone home and be less tethered... when I tried it out instead, all the limitations and the extra cost for the additional plan meant that I needed both at the same time, plus double charging ecc... After 2 weeks I felt MORE tethered than before and I sent it back. Unfortunately, no one seems to want you to be LESS entangled into the ecosystem, or online, or on their content, so it comes all down to doing it by yourself, and in the end it's really liberating!

Ever since picking up the Ultra last year I’ve been leaving my phone behind at least 3-4 days of the week and I can attest the feeling of detoxing from social media’s especially has helped me quit even while I have my phone on me.

I will also say, as somebody who got the cellular watch (though never activated the cellular feature on my mobile plan, whoops😅) part of the reason was to have a backup if my phone battery died or if I lost my phone. I'd still have access to my card via Apple Wallet, which also gave access to public transport as in Sydney you can tap on with your credit card. I'd still be able to call for help in an emergency, wether that be a 000 level emergency or just a "call family/friends to come get me" emergency. It's a backup. It's safety. It's security that I know the battery will last past midnight and it can't fall out my pocket on the bus, which I can't guarantee the same with my phone

I use iPhone 13 mini. Upgraded from iPhone SE 2020. I use it for photos and what’s app. That all. All notifications are off except for 2 apps of 200. Mail I have to physically open and swipe down to refresh. Other than that on the metro I will play solitaire and text. Rarely even call. I have a Wi-Fi Apple Watch 8. I use it for hikes/walk and just general health info. Apple Watch is also always in theatre mode. If I want the time I click the crown. Battery life is amazing on the watch when you do that!

I would love to see a Mac Address video that deals with gaming on iDevices and MacBooks. Gaming is the reason why I am not considering the change from Windows to Mac. Kudos to always shoutout the mini, love my 13 mini to bits and this channel made me consider it.

I have an AW Ultra and shortly after my provider enabled dual e-sim capabilities so my watch now has LTE. I planned on using it at the gym but quickly found out that the Watch OS version i was using apparently had streaming issues to the point were my playlist would just cut out at some point and not start again. i love the idea of an LTE enabled watch but it hasn't turned out the way i would have liked it to. there really isn't a point in leaving my phone on my desk at work either because having to pull out my airpods just to make a call is more inconvenient then just having my phone with me

The usecase you outline at the start is exactly what it's for. I love going for a run and leaving my phone behind. I use the Walkie-Talkie app if I need to contact my wife, but other than that I switch off. Couple it with my cellular iPad Mini and I'd love to get rid of my phone altogether (but you can't).

Having been unfortunate to not only have a phone boot loop in 2017, but a phone get destroyed earlier this year Having a watch with cellular is a lifesaver for emergency calls and texts But I also realized how much my life is stuck in my phone. It's an interesting way to live life for sure!

I don’t often need the cellular service, but also also, the times I DO need it is often enough that I feel it’s worth the extra price A cellular watch + music or podcast service of your choice + some iPods + some running shoes = Fantastic run through the park in the morning

I do something like this. The AirPods are mandatory. The series 7 swipe-able keyboard makes a huge difference. Screentime on my iPhone wasn’t enough because I could bypass it with a tap. It suck’s that I have to keep the phone on and plugged in somewhere. Often that can be the USB charger in my car, where I also often accidentally leave it when I do need a mini computer with me on the go. My smart lights at home are also harder to deal with without the phone on me. Same with not having the camera at all times. It always looked way too expensive to be worth it but, after trying a dumb phone instead, I am hooked on the watch. Sometimes you need a pocket computer with you and then I can take the phone and my phone number, contacts list, calendar etc are all in sync and the same as when I don’t have the phone. Not perfect but it’s still pretty good. A touch of the Apple of old as it doesn’t do everything but what it does do is enough. And you get the benefit of way less distractions … once you’ve got through the detox period.

I have been using the cellular apple watch models since AW3. Now I am at ultra. I have tried to disable it from time to time to just try, but I notice every time that I need to have it enable. For example, on the summer me and the boys are often out on the leak and swimming and riding jet ski, I always then leave the phone on land and can be contacted if needed

My setup is like yours but have the 13promax. I believe the watch isn’t supposed to replace the totality of the iPhone. I have freedom and peace of mind knowing that in a pinch and with $10 monthly if I needed an emergency connection it is there. Bonus on all the other kool features like health and fitness tracking. I’m just glad to have this technology compared to 40 years ago when I kept telling my mother I was board. Cheers

For me, the low cost of having the watch on cellular per month is great for going to the gym. I can leave my phone at home and stream music and podcasts to a pair of headphones, check in to the gym with the watch app, and unlock my door when I get back home with home key. I don’t think it’s for full-time use, but if there’s an hour or two a day where you can be out of the house without your phone doing something like the gym, or jogging, or taking a walk, then I think it’s worth it.

Suuuuper late to this video, but I'd definitely say one of the best use cases for a smart watch is when you have kids. My wife and I owned the 1st gen AW, and at some point stopped using them. For me, it was during winter where the AW just became too much of a hassle with heavy winter coats and barely ever got used. But several years + 2 highly active boys later, we've found ourselves wondering if an AW would help us tell time, reply to super important texts, and take calls while keeping our hands empty in case we need to do parenting/kid things (like, if one of our boys asks us to hold their dump truck lol). While we decided to go at it without AWs, I've definitely put some time into Shortcuts so I can keep my hands off my phone as much as possible while spending time with my kids.

I love how similar videos I’ve seen shit all over the watch. I think that’s because they went about this with the incorrect mindset of “replacing” the iPhone, which doesn’t work and won’t work because the watch is not an iPhone… Here we get a genuine experience and some personal development that came from it, pretty cool. Also cool how details like the watch’s battery being kinda weak weren’t mentioned to make room for more important topics
