@formaldehyde-p We often imprint our own ideals and standards on things from the past. Turns out a large part of recent Christian history was dominated by whites, so that's the "popular" retelling. Just like Jesus being white when, obviously, he'd be Jewish like his family and community. Nobody in the Bible goes "and weirdly, Jesus specifically looked completely different from us." It's all about perspective.

As someone who speaks Hebrew its only now clear to me how everyone's names in the bible lost their meaning in translation. Pretty much every name in the bible has a meaning, like you said isaac is יצחק which is "will laugh" cause sarah laughed when she was told she would have a baby. Both sarai (שרי) and abram (אברם) changed their names to show their faith by adding gods letter ה to their name, turning into שרה and אברהם. Esau is עשו which resembles grass so it may be because he came with a full head of hair out of the womb, and עשו is either "ready" cause he came out all grown or "hairy". Jacob is יעקב which either means "will follow" or "by the heel" because jacob came out of the womb holding Esau's heel, following him. Ishmael's name ישמעאל is just the words for "god will hear" (ישמע-אל) because god heard Hagar's prayers and calls for help. Hagar's name הגר is either related to the word immigrant, or the word harbor (as in harbor or house a baby). Adam means human in Hebrew (אדם) and Eve is Hava (חווה) and means farm / barn for some reason.

@@Jon-bv7nl I used to think so too, but turns out there are thousands of people who actively worship the classic Greek gods, the gods of the vikings are specially popular, and so are the old gods of Egypt. They're not dominant religions, but they're pretty popular. And mythology isn't determined by that anyway. The story of Genesis is mythology by definition. Even the emperor of Japan, right after World War 2, called the belief that his ancestry starts at the sun a myth, even though that remained his own religion.
