Comedian Nish Kumar is best known for his five years at the helm of BBC Two's The Mash Report.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The show was cancelled by the BBC earlier this year and moved to Dave under a new name - Late Night Mash.
But in an act of "self-cancellation", Kumar stepped down as its host and is touring with his new show, Control, in 2022.
He speaks to Krishnan about leaving The Mash Report, seeking professional help for his mental health and sexism in comedy.
Producer: Faye White

Thanks for the interview-it's really interesting to hear about Nish's pov in a more serious format. After reading the BBC report about how the BBC had a hiring policy that excluded the formal hiring of people linked to left-wing parties during the 70s (and later... and this policy legacy and problems for true diversity and equality in the production teams etc) I am always really curious about how some of these programmes get made and the experiences of the people who make them (especially after David Olusoga spoke out abouthis experiences). I hope that things keep improving. In television and in general. Things are changing - unfortunately the blow back (as evidenced in the comments) is part of it. Deeply appreciate the work of both Nish and Krishna GM. Thanks for the insights.

I love Nish's work; he is always my favorite guest on The Bugle, and his performance on Taskmaster was absolutely classic. His comedy comes from a place of conviction, and that's admirable. I hope he takes those bread rolls and turns them into delicious, delicious sandwiches.

You have to love your country to see its flaws and try to change things for the better. If you think the wealthy Etonian elitists are your friends, you're not paying attention...
@thelostboy916

Does it have to be either-or? Most people can decern between criticism that comes from good faith and wanting to improve, and criticism that comes from spitefulness and the politics of revenge. Kumar is clearly in the latter category.

@@thelostboy916 well people do actually do that by continually voting for Tories and believing things like Mogg is ‘a man of the people’ or that Johnson somehow cares about them. Both views which are quite clearly contrary to reality.

All performers - musicians, comedians, actors - are interconnected with the audience. I think a good performance is a conversation and conversations cannot be objective in the same way a journalist narrates facts and events. Comedy is a work of art and that is something that the artist creates. Aristotle reflected on the purpose of theatre and theatrical schools in the Society and how humans, being complex social creatures, should reflect on the Society for their own personal benefit and for the benefit of the Society.

Be an left-wing political activist if you cannot grasp the comedic aspect of the genre. Such an shame that both the BBC and Channel 4 love you so much you'll get a job there instead of doing the rest of the British TV public an favour and *boring off!*

Barnard Castle, We have all heard of that venue haven't we. Wembley, the O2, Barnard Castle. The government couldn't give 2 shits about what Nish Kumar says on TV shows and do you think you live in Communist china ? do you think Boris and his cabinet can just call up the BBC and say cancel this man because he hates us? his show was canceled because the viewership was so low, the BBC are woke until they start loosing money and wasting prime airtime.

♡*Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. There is no other intermediary. May Jesus Bless you, trust Him, give your life - and He will take care of it :pray Convert yourself and believe in the Gospel - Romans 10 8-10 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.♡;**

@SuRyeon An I don't know why you think I'm a colonizer. I dont understand why this conclusion: if someone wants to share love and what they feel about the relationship with the Savior Jesus Christ. What's the problem with that? It doesnt order anyone to change their faith. Each of us has a free will and it is up to us to decide what path we want to take. I wish you have a nice day

Telling how the only event he remembers from 2017 was when some "Nazis walked about" and not the terror attack at Westminster Bridge that killed four innocent people, the Manchester Arena booming where 22, mostly young girls, were murdered, Borough Market attacks where 8 were killed and 48 were injured, and the Parson Green bombing. Not to forget the endless terror attacks that took place in Europe. It must have slipped his memory.
@BobbyCookOfficial

when did he say that Charlottesville was the only event that took place in 2017? He just said it happened (which it did). Would be an interesting new moral rule to put into place that when mentioning one bad thing that happened someone has to mention an extensive list of all other bad things that happened that year
