Fun fact, during the whole table dance scene, Mara was nervous about doing it. So, to make her feel better, Danny had the entire cast and crew dance along with her behind the camera.

In case no one has mentioned it, this movie was being filmed as Mara Wilson's mother was suffering a terminal illness. Danny Devito not only pulled strings to get her an advance copy of the movie to see before she died, but he and Rhea Perlman all-but-adopted Mara, letting her look to them as parental figures before and after her mother's passing.

Congratulations on your baby girl!! I loved Matilda growing up and there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that also tugs on the heartstrings. The actress actually lost her mother to cancer right after they wrapped filming and years later Danny DeVito told her he snuck an almost finished copy of the movie into the hospital for her mother to watch before she died.

As a lifelong Roald Dahl fan, this is one of the best adaptations of his work. The changes they make don't detract in anyway, and add sequences that make for a fun movie. But more than that, I love the behind the scenes stuff about this movie. Look it up if you decide you need a good cry after all.

Pam Ferris (Ms Trunchbull) plays Laura Thyme in 'Rosemary & Thyme' & its such a big difference, like she plays a really kind gardener/detective & so when I saw this it gave me such whiplash 🤣 Danny & his real life wife Rhea Perlman did everything they could to be guardians for little Mara, her mother was dying at the time & they managed to get an early edit for the mum to watch before she died, they took such good care of her during filming & made such a great movie

Roald Dahl,, the author the book this is based on, had a tendency to really dive into childhood fears with some horror elements. Other films based on his works you cans always see an element of horror, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, Gremlins (loosely inspired by the roald dahl book The Gremlins) and more. The setting is one of the biggest changes in the film. Matilda was originally set in the UK. The author had a pretty hard childhood by most reports and his own autobiography. He lost his sister and his father when he was very young and went to a boarding school that was extremely abusive to the boys. He referred to the school as a "living hell" which sorta explains the depiction of the school in this.

The musical version of Matilda is incredible and has been running in the west end for over 10 years! The songs were written by Tim Minchin so obviously they're great It took me ages to realise that the actress who played Miss Trunchbull was playing a nun in Call the Midwife. She was a tough no nonsense nun but still a nun

Trunchbull is more terrifying to me than Michael Myers lol. This movie is one of my favs ever and I had it on vhs as a child. I felt a bit like Matilda myself as I would spend hours reading. I also taught myself to read at 4 and wish I’d had access to a library all the time. School library was best I could do. I also had a stepdad that was very much like her dad so I felt this whole movie. My Kindergarten teacher was very much like miss Honey and even remembered me when she ran into my mom at the local library like 2 decades later. ❤ I don’t read as much as I used to back then but I never stopped my love of learning. Anyways, Congrats on the baby, man! Wish you all the best!

@@Megan-ir3ze yes! Roald Dahl is the author. He wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches and the BFG as well if the name already rings a bell for you but can’t place him. I do find the film a little more cheerful than the book though, but the artwork by Quentin Blake is very sweet. (If you’re up for a short story of his which is a little more grown up though, totally recommend his Tales of the Unexpected; which was also made into a tv show. We read Lamb to the Slaughter by him way back when I was at school and it was a really entertaining story.)

Old cars had the odometer driven by a cable. At some point, they began to make them tamper-proof so that you couldn't roll them back (or at least not easily) but I'm not sure when that happened. The cars he's selling do look pretty old, so I wouldn't be surprised if it worked there. I did have to replace the gages in my car once, and when I did, I took the original odometer and put it into my replacement gages (so that the kilometres matched the car, as they should). I decided to see if I could roll the old one back, just for fun. It turns out that by 1988, it was very difficult.

I have an Aunt who used to live in California, where this movie was filmed. She was headed to work one day in early 1996 when she faced a road block... It was closed off because Danny DeVito was filming in that area for this movie. He personally spoke to everyone in the area to inform them about what was going on and apologized for any inconveniences. My aunt had recognized him from the Schwarzenegger-DeVito comedies and kindly asked if she could have a picture taken with him. Danny happily agreed and to this day, in her bedroom, the very same (autographed) picture of my great-aunt and Danny DeVito on set of 'Matilda' still hangs there!
