QUICK NOTE: I don't believe that the Withings scale is accurate when it comes to bodyfat %. Don't get hung up on the numbers, but rather that body fat has been going down and muscle mass has been going up with no other change to my diet or exercise from before I quit drinking.

I quit drinking almost every morning for 22 years. After 29 years sober, I still have nightmares that I'm drunk . I wake up with a clear mind and am thankful it was a nightmare. Want to stop drinking permanently? Stop romanticizing alcohol and look at the real effects. Next urge, instead of thinking about "having a good time" , think about running over some kid on a bike and them trapped under your car screaming while you're staggering around the car. I thank the Lord everyday I never hurt anyone driving home from a "good time". BTW, it gets much easier after a full year of sobriety .

I made a commitment to abstain from alcohol for 30 days. I am now at 40 days. My daughter passed away in August and I found myself drinking daily, and, like you, I like good wine. When I opened a bottle, I drank the whole bottle. I realized how futile that was. It changed nothing except how I felt. And that was lazy and lethargic and generally crappy. Will I drink again? Probably. But not as a crutch. Right now, I have no desire to imbibe. Thank you for your honesty.

100 days is a great achievement, my friend. Well done. Having talked to a counselor from a professional rehab clinic, for most people it takes about 6-8 months being sober for the brain to rewire itself fully. There's a sort of "fog" that lifts, that you never knew was there. I recently stopped nicotine use. I have smoked cigs from my 18th birthday, and never thought I would quit. I switched to vaping to taper down, and stopped completely a few months ago. I caved and bought cigs once, but doing good resisting the temptation otherwise.

i gave up alcohol in April after deciding to do the chicago marathon. Best thing I ever did. I had drank steady and somewhat hard and very consistently for 20+ years. The first couple weeks and even months were tough. Then I tried athletic NA beer. That really helped. But I was able to train properly and finish the marathon last month. After the marathon I drank some beers. Two things happened. 1: I got fairly drunk off of 2-3 beers. 2: I realized I much preferred my life with no alcohol than I did with alcohol. As of November 1, i am alcohol free, back on keto, and ready to take my life to the next level. Thanks for the videos and go pack go.

I personally feel that your decision to NOT say you’ll never drink again is a great one. As humans, once we say you can NEVER have it again, things get really tough for some of us. It puts a lot of pressure on us. That said, I think everyone is different. Some people need meetings and need to stop totally. I have many dear friends who go to meetings. Your challenge, which I took and was successful with was an eye opener for me. I drink a lot less now. So sincerely happy for you and your decision. I roast coffee (I have a commercial coffee roaster in my house). If for some reason you would like the BEST cup of coffee you will ever have, I would be happy to send you a pound of coffee (my gift) when you end your coffee “fast”. Thanks again for all you do for us.

There’s a few things that sadden me in life. One is alcohol. It can either relax you after a rough day or it can kill you. It killed my grandpa aunt and uncles. Literally. I can drink and not touch it for a month or more. I enjoy it I don’t have to have it. It saddens me that people, some people , can’t enjoy it. It rules their life. It’s hard to kick. But I know people who have become sober and I respect them so much because how hard it is! I did adkins in 03’ and in his book he said if you can take a bite of chocolate and be satisfied eat the chocolate. If you eat the whole thing you can’t have a bite. I’m a have a bite person. Good job Steve. Most people don’t get in touch with their body and how they feel like you. This is one challenge I’m proud of you for!

'Being a 'Take a bite person' works with me for chocolate, but 2 glasses of wine brings me closer to the edge of not caring about that 3rd+ glass...and it totally fails when it comes to cigarettes! If I don't smoke the 1st one, I can go for hours - which is more akin to how I am able to do fasting. But it is how all addiction begins with 'just this once' or 'only a little bit'...

Check out the book, "Alan Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking." I NEVER would've believed I could stop smoking by reading a book, but I did. I stumbled across the book by chance (from comments on a blog post) and quit within days, after almost 40 years smoking. (I started as a young teen and quit in 2017.) And yes, it was easy. I know how insane that sounds. Our culture leads people to believe they can't quit smoking because of withdrawal, etc. Nicotine is an addictive substance that's out of your body quickly. Mr Carr explains it so you will understand how you don't need cigarettes. Please try the book. Good luck.

Congratulations on your achievement, Steve. Your list of things to consider regarding alcohol is stellar. Thank goodness, my decision making WASN’T influenced by alcohol. My childhood trauma-induced ANGER and reactions, though, have left my life a bit of a wasteland, especially relationships! Major EMDR therapy has helped there. For me, the worst “addiction” is to sweets, which has now been reduced by a higher fat diet which has created a kind of satiation. I eat less, overall. I’m saving money on food, generally, because I’m not as hungry as I used to be. High carb foods? Not as much of a draw. I know what they do to me, so I don’t eat (or drink) them! Your vulnerability in these videos is spectacular, Steve! Thanks for sharing.

I went over three years without alcohol when I went keto, to clean my liver. I missed enjoying red wine with dinner on occasion, but I was never a drinker-at least since college. Otherwise, I didn't miss it. I got some hard seltzers for New Year's Eve, and quickly found I didn't care about them. I still have half of them in my garage. Oddly, I still haven't had wine. So, I'm no longer abstaining, but I'm not really drinking, either. I decided I'd rather be in ketosis, unless some occasion comes up.

When I was in my 20's, an older friend told me he quit drinking because of his lack of judgement when imbibing. The message didn't strike home until I was 35 and risking my life and health with my poor judgement, so I quit and my decision making improved tremendously. Thirty years later, I've only been drunk once, sharing a bottle of single malt with my sister on her 50th birthday, but otherwise it's just one short glass of scotch to toast America on Independence Day. So well spoken...I decided to stop my "Daily Glass of Wine" (or two) when I modified my diet. Keto modified, with no dairy or wheat. No problem because I'd have a shot of gin or vodka now and then instead. Now, like you mentioned, I feel so good that I don't even want that. I usually have only water. If it is a social occasion, I may or may not have a drink, and only ONE. Other drinking folks seem to have more of a problem with those who don't drink, which is odd to me. The rare morning after a drink, my face looks drawn and tired, compared to smiley and perky otherwise. And yes, I noticed that you do glow. All in all, I feel great & have smooth energy all day...not bad for mid-60's!! One cup of java in AM with MCT oil takes me to my daily meal. Thank you for being an N of one! I enjoy your channel.

I find better mental clarity, energy, and mood! And, like you and many others, I’m definitely NOT my best self when I’ve been drinking. It’s sad because some of the best people I’ve known are wonderful people when sober, but can be horrible when they’ve been drinking. My stepdad was a prime example as I was growing up. He was the most gentle, playful, and generous person you could know, but when the alcohol was in charge he became a nasty person. I never had an issue until more recently, so it hasn’t been long. But, I regret the things I’ve said and done while drinking. I’m so glad you shared your experience and it’s helped me to open my eyes to my own issue with alcohol. Thank you so much, Steve!! I might quit myself, I do know it's not really good for you ( I like to drink a lot). The other option I'm considering is just severely limit it, maybe one drink a day. I did quit entirely for 6 months when I was diagnosed with diabetes to get my A1c down to 5.6. Great job on cutting off the alcohol! You're inspiring to many.

Great job Steve. I find a lot of similarities between myself and you as far as alcohol is concerned. Personally I’m on day seven of giving it up. I’m definitely not an alcoholic but the older I get the more I realize that it gets in the way of a lot of things. Sleep, Family functions, weight loss goals, processing emotions and the list goes on and on. I agree with a lot of comments that you are an inspiration to many. Keep it up!

Congrats and thank you for being honest, and for sharing your experiences. I’ve been watching most of your videos for a while now, and I was so shocked when you first admitted that you see yourself as an alcoholic. Please don’t take offense, I mean this from an objective point of view. Here’s why: You are very disciplined, you care about your health, you go to extremes to monitor changes, and your life’s work is continuous improvement. It surprised me that you would willingly do something commonly known to confuse thinking , increase risky behaviors, and lead to poor choices. Also at $300 /month , it seems financially unwise. 🤔 I’m so glad that you are sharing your findings, both measurable and subjective. I’m sure it will help others. I’d love to hear what your wife and other family members notice about the changes in you. When you talked about Conner’s laid back attitude ,and how you are experiencing that now for yourself , I couldn’t help but think about how so many people never experience that~how the changes they make in themselves help those around them. Again, congrats on your personal growth and improvement Steve! Thank you for sharing!👏👍😊

My daughter talked me into moving from north Idaho to her home in Arizona, God bless my trucker son-in-law!, but I have lost a lot of control of my life and being able to see people like you is helping me. Congratulations, Steve! It's great that you care enough about yourself, your quality of life and your loved ones to make very meaningful positive changes! I'm sure your family is enjoying the "New Steve" just like you are! Although I don't drink and haven't for many years now, I have a very simple thought process that I use about food bc my health is not great. It's not just about staying on keto, it's also about staying healthy. So, if something is questionable, I ask myself this question, "do you want to get better or do you want to get worse?" Putting it in this way forces me to think about the fact that eating certain things has a negative impact on my health which helps me put the brakes on instead of mindlessly putting something in my mouth that's not the greatest! God bless you for being such a positive role model to others in these days where excessive drinking is celebrated in movies, in commercials, in songs and very sadly, in many many lives!

This is an important topic Steve! It should be talked about. I still remember having a bottle of beer a 9 am ( granted I worked at night- so I justified it as my evening) but seeing my 7 yr old son looking at me drinking in the morning like this is normal and ok… it’s wasn’t, - it wasn’t ok and I wasn’t ok… I missed valuable time with my family (that lasted a few years… including holidays and the like) because i stayed intoxicated…now I am present each day with my family and it feels amazing. I learned that I needed to accept and deal with my emotions not drown then in alcohol. Thanks for sharing Steve. Its a good thing to be sober minded.

I think 100 days is brilliant (especially since this video is already 3 months old and it's likely much more by now)!!! I stopped drinking alcohol 11 years ago and I don't say that to belittle your achievement, but to say, that with me it also started with 1 day, 1 week, 30 days, 100 days and so on and so on. You are on a journey that started with the first step, just like any other journey. I can report the same results that stopping alcohol had for you. Blood pressure, weight loss, calmness and general mental health, general wellbeing etc. Good on you! Keep it going! 🙏🏽😎

WOW, you've had several revelations about drinking and I applaud you. I have also realized as I get older, like we all do I guess, that we are better without it. It really impacts how I feel as far as arthritis and just a general feeling of crappiness. Wish I had this revelation twenty years ago. Three hundred dollars is a huge chunk of change, I'd start planning a nice long vacation with saving that. I definitely have had drinking impact my joints and never really realized it till after I quit then started and then quit again. Like you, I'm not saying never again, because I do like a beer every now and again. But, then again, I hate the sore joints that inevitably come back the very next day. I do notice a difference in my face also and hydration the next day. Very eloquent video.

Great video. Have you been able to go out and get some good walks in? Some of the ETOH units I worked would insist that our patients get outside and get fresh air. One place, in Oregon, had great walking areas right next to the facility. One day, a patient tapped me on the shoulder and said, “This is amazing! I’m noticing how green the grass is, the blue of the sky. Never saw these things when I drank.” After that, I started asking people if they were noticing all these things more. Almost always, the answer was positive. So getting outside to just enjoy things is important, and a high of its own.

I just started a dry January from drinking almost every night and getting drunk on the weekends. Even after a week of no alcohol I’m sold on how bad it was for me to drink that much. The first thing I noticed was how amazing it is to wake up on a Saturday morning NOT hungover. It’s transformed my weekends and in turn the rest of my week. Totally worth it if you’re drinking as much as I did. The money I’m saving is nice and I tip and give more money away as a result. That’s also been nice and beneficial. The biggest downside I’m seeing so far is that bartenders do not like me asking for water. Not the end of the world.

My overall conditions were bad. Since 4 weeks I am on Keto and off alkohol. I feel so much better. My blood pressure and weight did reduce and as you say I feel like another version of me. My mind is clear and open for new things. I hope I can stay on track. For me Alkohol is a big trap and I have fallen in for a too long time.
