Anakin Skywalker's turn to the dark side was 'fast' in the eyes of many Star Wars fans. However, in 3 minutes I will explain to you how it is not fast at all, and why his turn makes so much sense. In fact, I would argue his turn was justified (not his actions, those were messed up, but his turn).
Order 66 aside, Anakin's years of being put down and held back by the Jedi was a test for him to overcome his impatience, however, when he couldn't save his mother, the process had really begun.
I believe, like Dave Filoni said, had Qui-Gon Jinn beat Darth Maul and trained Anakin, then Qui-Gon would have been the father figure Anakin always needed. Anakin wouldn't have turned. However, Obi-Wan as his master, was not fully ready for such a padawan.
Anakin's turn is a reflection of the treatment and abuse he received over the years at the Jedi Temple.

Padme was the one person who understood Anakin. The one person who knew him like no other person did, inside and out. Besides his Mother, who died in his own arms, out of all of those in the galaxy including his closest friends, none of them showed him as much love, support, and affection as Padme did despite his many flaws and mistakes. And with all the years upon years of nothing but pain and trauma just building up, it should surprise nobody how that would make him realize that she was the only one who truly mattered to him, and as such had to do everything he could to keep her alive. He loved her so much that he would’ve sold his own soul to the devil to save her, and he did just that. And yet she dies anyway... And he is made to think that it was his own fault. If that wouldn’t create a monster out of you, then nothing would.

@@wolfgang7812 You're talking about two VASTLY different characters my guy, characters who aren't even in the same show, let alone universe. 😂 but it wasn't just his love for Padme that turned him to the darkside, although she was the most motivating factor, he simply wanted more. He believed and was bred to believe he was destined for much more power, and it was never given to him, and he became corrupted by the dark side whilst seeking for it. And yes you can have a sith lord who brings balance to the force, because that's exactly what happened in Ep. 6 (it's literally the basis of the entire story). In order for balance to be brought, the Jedi order had to be brought down because they themselves had become too corrupt and set in their ways and weren't servents of the force anymore, and the sith needed to be destroyed. He did both of those, he brought down the Jedi so they could be born anew, and he destroyed the Sith by killing the Emperor and himself, and in his final moments was brought back to the light side by Luke.

The prequels geniusly depicted the fall of Anakin and thats why i love the prequles more than anything else. Like yoda said in episdoe 1 to anakin, " Fear is the path to the dark side. This is why watching him turn hurt so much. You know from the beginning how things will end, but you come to love Anakin and almost wish the outcome were different, but inevitably he becomes Darth Vader. Just leaves you feeling like you can’t accept there wasn’t a happy ending for him. But it’s also an outstanding ability Lucas has to make the audience feel connected to a character and then feel all these emotions from things like this. Hayden was also amazing. They couldn’t have chosen a better Anakin.

True, but don't forget that Palpatine was able foresee events of the future. Considering that his plan was to turn Anakin to the dark side, he could have used this line when Anakin killed Count Dooku because he had foreseen the events between Anakin and Mace Windu in the Chancellor’s office, therefore creating conflict and turning him against the Jedi, which he gradually did by saying they didn't trust Anakin and that he was more powerful, etc.

Clone wars adds a lot of depth to his turn as well. The constant discouraging of "having attachments" he had the biggest heart and cared so deeply for everyone and the jedi around him are constantly saying "eh, if they die they die. We must be ready to let go of our attachments. Do not have attachments" etc. Too blinded by their ways to see the damage they were causing.
@adstryker5084
@adstryker5084 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't the Jedi who were blinded -- the point the Jedi tried to make to Anakin is that his all-consuming attachments blinded *him*. And the plotlines show this clearly -- Anakin made horribly damaging decisions that ultimately hurt millions of people, all because he was selfish. He murdered younglings because Palpatine promised to show him how to save Padme ... that wasn't for Padme's benefit -- it was for Anakin's benefit. And then in a fit if pique he mortally wounded Padme himself. Anakin's "attachments" were not altruistic -- they were selfish.
@caitlinlawrence1867
@caitlinlawrence1867 2 жыл бұрын
@@wolfgang7812 I think its likely that jealous attachment, possessiveness, was what the jedi were supposed to avoid. But in the thousands of years they boiled it down to no attachment period. Which I think is where they failed Anakin, and many others. If they had taught him to handle love and loss in an appropriate way, then he would have been better equipped to handle the loss of his mother, and the potential loss of Padmé.
@christopherstein2024
@christopherstein2024 Жыл бұрын
@@caitlinlawrence1867 What they have extracted as philosophy is that being selfless is the path to balance. And no self means no attachment that binds you as a person. The Jedi in this sense are supposedly sacrificing a lot to serve the republic but you are free to leave if this burden is to much. They failed Anakin because they let him join the order. They knew of his burdens and they just should have let him be a normal human and watch over him. He wasn't capable of taking it. When the council granted Obi-Wan the right to train him it was actually just Yoda saying "the council gives you permission". It never was decided by the council. They are flawed, as an institution as Yoda takes decisions in the name of the entire council. Also they are flawed in there nature of being selfless additionally as Qui Gon puts his own agenda over that of the council, Queen Amidala, Jar Jars, arguably Anakins Mother and his Padawan is clearly arrogant. Also in ability as Yoda says that they have been blind and Mace says they should inform the Senate that their abilities have been weakened. The prophecies are difficult to analyze because they seem self fulfilling. So really was there any chance to save Padme? Perhaps Anakin would have saved her just by leaving the Order which he contemplated for a short time. Perhaps letting go like Yoda said was the only way for Anakin to not lose both her and the republic. There is no clue that Anakin would have ever gained the power to save her by the dark side. That could have been completely made up by Palpatine.

@Ad Stryker Anakin didn’t mortally wound Padme! I’m sure was just a poor choice of words as he didn’t wound her at all, he force choked her for a second. Anakin's turn was always entirely comprehensible to me, but that never kept it from being sad. I think that was because as a 7 year old boy, Anakin Skywalker was my role model, hero, and even idol. I was obsessed with Star Wars as a kid, and I wanted to be a Jedi so badly (I think there's probably others who can relate to varying degrees). But because I saw so much of myself in Anakin, or as Anakin, I used him to inform my ideal version of myself, attaching whatever his fate was to mine. When Anakin served the light side, I felt like I could triumph, like I could crush my enemies with the force, powerful, revered. When Anakin fell, I was afraid that I would become like that, that I would be hopeless and abandoned and villainized. And, by and large, it became a self fulfilling prophesy. I'm thankful that as an adult, I can examine the effects this had on me as a child, and have a deeper appreciation of the wonderful and truly legendary work performed by Hayden Christensen.

I like Dave Filoni's take that Darth Maul killing Qui-gon Jin was the turning point that sets Anakin's fall in motion. Anakin trained by Qui-gon doesn't fall to the dark side, Anakin trained by Obi-wan does fall to the dark side. The music during the battle is called "Duel of the Fates" and it's literally a duel for the fate of Anakin. It just takes the next 12+ years to get to the place where he turns to the dark side for the reasons SWT lays out in the video.
@kupkate04

Yeah, I've always said that if Qui-gon had trained Anakin he wouldn't have succumbed to the dark side because Qui-gon would have understood him and adapted to his way of thinking, rather than force him to mold to the wishes of the Jedi Council. Their biggest issue was that they kept disregarding his feelings and blowing him off, which in turn caused him to resent them. Obi-Wan loved Anakin, but he just wasn't the right person to train him, due to his strong biases. His loyalty was always tied to the Council, not Anakin. And I think that's what ultimately set Anakin's fate in stone.

Man I've never heard anyone defend our Anakin so impeccably. Things you said were always in my mind but never knew how to talk about it. He was a slave, was taken away from his mother, the master who promised to train him died even before it starts, everyone says he's the chosen one but still restraining from reaching his full ability telling him that he is dangerous, was literally questioned for everything he did even though it resulted in the well being of the republic and the Jedi , risk his life several times to fight battles that even the most powerful could not , after doing all this still was insulted by taking him to the council but not giving the rank of Master telling that he's reckless and young even thought he has his own padawan,asked help for his visions/dreams about for his mother and wife twice but got neglected by even Master Yoda telling him to let go the one true love of his life, and finally when someone told him a way to save his love's live , he was still conflicted by his inner sense of good and bad. After all this he still requested Master Windu for the trail of Palpatine but was again disregarded. Then he had no other way. Had to do things that he would never wanted to (His tear falling from his eyes at Mustafar shows his remorse). Padme could've brought him back to light but then Obi-Wan appeared out of nowhere(not blaming Kenobi but still..).He lost all of his limbs and was literally burnt alive only to know , all that he had done was in vain. Then after many years he learns the truth about his children and sacrificed himself to save his son telling that Padme was right, there's still good in him . That's why he's my favorite character ever and always will be.

OT guy here. I remember the excitement when the prequels came out and I was one of those critical of them, but not as much as the haters. I loved the podracing scenes the amazing light saber choreographies and while I thought the CG landscapes and such were maybe a bit too overdone, they still looked beautiful. I hated the "midichlorians" that dulled the sense of mysticism of the force, and thought episode 2 was a bit boring overall, but I never believed that Anakin's turn was "fast" and saw all the hardships he went through and episode 3 is actually one of my favorites as it perfectly captures the final push into Darth Vader! Thanks for encapsulating Anakin's journey so well. Over time I've been able to even backtrack on some of my superficial criticisms of the prequels and appreciate the storytelling in them more, but even back then and especially now, Revenge of the Sith is still on par with the OT movies for me!

This is why I could never understand the argument that the prequels “ruined” Vader. 1, 2 and 3 made Vader. They turned him into a person. They explained the tragedies that forged him into a monster he didn’t want to be. And they turned him into my, and many others’ most compelling villain in fiction. I love this story, and Vader even more because of it. I understand that some people don’t like the origin story he was given. But its course is a very, very believable one.

Basically everybody kind of imagined he grew up on maybe a war torn planet or at least in some significantly harsher slavery conditions. I mean having a bomb in your head is pretty harsh,but the way they directed the kid to say the line it came out almost like he was okay with it. They needed a director who fit better with Jake Lloyd,who by the way was able to act more pained and concerned as a sick kid in ER than they had him act at any point in Episode I. Don't get me wrong,I like the prequels,but they needed some percent more "Tell us now!" Anakin and less "It's not fair!" Anakin. Maybe having Anakin grow up in a way so that he never really believes fairness exists would have been enough. Or maybe even less than that,maybe make him more emotionally like William Munny in Unforgiven. I think the fact that it was maybe a B+ trilogy when it could have been a high A with very slight changes almost made it more disappointing. Having everybody coming out of your movie thinking about the one or two easy things that would have made parts your movie less bland can be worse for the perception of your movie than just making a terrible movie.

They weren't even about Vader. It was about Anakin. They're completely different people, and it makes the story even more heartbreaking. A celebrated Jedi Knight, a hero to the people, turns into basically space Hitler. No one's born evil, but hatred lurks and festers inside for years, and manifests itself in subtle ways. Until one defining moment brings it all into the surface, forces the person to make a choice. He'll choose strength over his past weakness anytime. Even when you're planting your feet firm, all it takes is just a little push to throw you off an edge. It's a very realistic depiction of fall from grace.

Obi Wan is kind of a dick to Anakin. When Anakin is having nightmarish visions and tells Obi Wan about them, Obi Wan is just like "meh, they'll go away, don't worry about it." Then there was the time when Obi Wan faked his own death and didn't trust Anakin enough to tell him. At the end of their fight on Mustafar, he chops off Anakin's limbs and just leaves him to there to burn alive. And then in the show when they fight on that asteroid or planet or w/e it was, he breaks Vader's mask and the control panel on his suit, then just leaves him there to slowly suffocate. Obi Wan's apology isn't worth much imo.

You must have missed the part where the Jedi council refused him, because he was too messed up already, and Qui-Gon pushed through because he was so strong with the force (midichorian count though the roof) But like some of these new fans, he thought strong with the force was all that counts, not seeing how easy it was for a boy like that to fall for the Dark Side, and how disastrous when that were to happen. The council didn’t fail him, a tragic childhood did. And Qui_Gon failed the Jedi, because he was so fixated on salvation, he didn’t see the pitfalls.

@@brmbkl I understand and respect what you're saying, however...why did they elect to keep him on as a padawan after Qui-Gon's death since they knew that he was so "messed up" already? To make things even worse, why'd they allow Obi-Wan, a recent padawan himself, to continue his training, knowing not only how potentially strong/dangerous he is, but also how messed up he is?? Like I get the idea that it made sense to keep him close, so he doesn't potentially fall to the darkside if left on his own, but again, to have him train under Obi-Wan at that time was foolish. It pretty much feels like the Jedi council decided to have a change of heart with Anakin because they felt bad that Qui-Gon died, but didn't really care about how he's trained, because he's damaged goods already. Its not a slight against Obi-Wan, it just feels like this very young man who was still progressing had to unexpectedly take on a child as his ward even if he did ask to do it. I don't understand what you mean by Obi-Wan being the "only one left after the Darth Maul fight." @@brmbkl The council did in fact fail him. They failed him big time. You can't expect a lost child to be obedient emotionless trooper. No one is too messed up to recover - that is the boomer logic to deal with mental health and they deserve all the backlash for that. It's not Anakin who's responsible for death of millions. The one thing I've noticed about the prequals is that they're very subtle. You have to be an active observer to understand them. They're way more deep than people realize. Palpatine manipulating things is a perfect example. We can see his subtle influence and on everyone from Ep1 if you're paying attention. How he uses and discards them once they've taken his plan to the next step. In Ep3 he stops trying to be so subtle as he knows he can get away with it at that point in order to execute his plan.

I already felt this way... It’s really hard to blame Anakin for the choices he made. I watched Revenge of The Sith recently and my sister and I cried watching him struggle with his choices. He was trying. He was trying SO hard to do the right thing. He told Mace Windu as soon as he found out Palpatine was a sith. If you watch Attack of the Clones, Anakin is rebellious and arrogant, but watching the Clone Wars and the beginning of Revenge of the Sith, you realize he HAS changed. BUT because of his power, Mace Windu and the council didn’t trust him, they were afraid. They didn’t give him Master because they were afraid of him. Although while keeping him held down, they put a ton of pressure on him, telling him to betray and spy on the chancellor etc. He was under so much pressure from both sides his whole life. The dark side and the light side weighed on him his whole life. He didn’t have someone like Qui Gon to teach him balance and why he shouldn’t be ashamed for wanting to save more people. Overall, I think the Jedi are right in saying attachments and emotions can lead to the dark side, but I think suppression of all emotions and attachments can be equally dangerous, and in the end that’s why Anakin turned.

But if you're going to involve yourself in geopolitics and put your order at the forefront of every confrontations then it shouldn't be against your code to kill. The sith are flawed because they're cannibalistic by nature and doomed to repeat history in a never ending cycle. Grey knights make the most sense because they don't lock away their emotions and fear their own emotions the way the jedi do (ironic considering they say fear is a path to the darkside, and yet they spend every day in fear of themselves) and there's no rule saying that just because you feel your emotions or make pragmatic decisions that may lead to deaths (but less in the long run) that you have to automatically go into some darkside rage and turn into a sith psychopath.

Well, the prequels are indeed a cautionary tale that set the stage for the story of the original trilogy... The entire saga is one man's rise, fall, and redemption. Someone who did things with good intentions but ended up losing everything and himself because he made a deal with the devil... Years later he got the chance to right his wrongs, but with the same good intentions. The idea that it's okay to love and show compassion came from Qui-Gon is Epi. I even... He was that loving, compassionate father figure that Anakin needed. So, no... They never state that it's bad to love (quite the opposite really), it's just jedi ideology is complicated and like Qui-Gon said... It's a very hard life. Anakin struggled with this and with the pressures, treatment, and resentment he got from the jedi, he was getting very close to the edge... And eventually fell to the other side.

She describes how she agreed with the idea that evil is often born of something good, at its core. And that Anakin’s care and love and frustration in thought of losing that is what lead to his evil. The love for his mother, his wife. And that she truly believed that one is born of the other, when it comes to good and evil. I tried hard to find this interview. She is so intelligent and it was more mind blowing to listen to than the movie. And something we don’t consider.

There is no such thing as a jedi who uses the dark side as a jedi is truly selfless and therefore unable to even use the dark side. @@InitialPC most likely yes they could have. But that goes against the Jedi way in some regards. Why free just this one? Because some small boy wants it? I never had anything against anakin for turning. I understood his frustration with the jedi council for treating him like they did, but most of all to save his wife, that is true love right there. He was willing to do what ever it took to save the love of his life. Anakins story is actually quite heartbreaking.

I took note that the core of his being was fear. The root cause of "evil" is fear. Instead of the Jedi accepting his fear and working through it to help him achieve peace, they denounced it and forced him to bottle it up. It's like being depressed and your friends tell you" "Just be more positive."
@VictorianGentleman
@VictorianGentleman 3 жыл бұрын
That's one of the best ways I've seen it put, great analogy! As someone who deals with mental health problems, I can fully attest to the fact that just telling someone to 'be more positive' or 'just don't worry so much' does not solve anything and will usually just make you more frustrated. Anakin's problem was basically that this was the only advice he was ever given to deal with his feelings, 'just ignore them'. That approach is never going to be helpful, and the Jedi for some reason never tried any other way to handle this situation when their empty words kept falling flat. That line of thinking clearly didn't work for Anakin, so they should have tried something else. And aren't the Jedi supposed to help people? Even if Anakin needs to better deal with loss, there is no reason to not try to save someone's life if it's in danger. The least they could do was look into it.

Because that's the way that the Jedi evolved. Fear leads to the dark side because fear of is often a form of greed. The Jedi are supposed to be selfless just like suicidal people aren't supposed to administer nuclear arsenals. To my knowledge Lucas has never implied that the council is supposed to be evil in any kind. He stated that Anakin wants to possess Padme and that he is spoiling himself with his fear to loose her. So this new narrative is often not what George envisioned. And where does this "restricted section" stuff come from? Is this Harry Potter?

I think in all honesty when looking at the whole story he was right in the beginning but by the end lost control due to those around him and instead of figuring it out he ended up trying to use his strength to control people. And even as Vader he has a controlling personality common in those who grow up being controlled.

Also, Anakin was brought up in such a strict adherence to the Jedi Code in his teachings, that it was causing a great struggle in him between following the Jedi and saving Padme with Dark Side power. So Mace Windu was a Jedi Master who didn't grant Anakin the rank of Master which meant to Anakin that he was not as faithful to the Jedi Code and strong with the Lightside as Mace was. He runs into the chancellors office and finds Mace willing to sacrifice the code to kill Palpatine. This action is the true catalyst for his fall because it is the moment that Anakin has concrete proof that the council are not the paradigms of light that they would have you believe and cannot be trusted as such.

"They see your future. They know your power will be too strong to control." -Palpatine to Anakin These words might've been pure manipulation, but he was right. The Jedi were afraid of Anakin's power. They were afraid of what he might become if they allowed him to achieve his full potential. I imagine the Jedi never forgot Revan's turn to the Dark Side and the carnage he wrought as a result. They likely feared a repeat of what happened back then. In their refusal to allow him to become who he was born to be, always denying him the credit he deserved and requiring more from him than any other Jedi, all the while not allowing him to work through his emotions by refusing to acknowledge them, they created a self-fulfilling prophecy that ultimately led to their own destruction.

Star Wars gets better when implementing Attachment Theory it shows the root causes for most of his fears and how each person did fail him, and who manipulated him (Palpatine) except Qui-Gon whom if lived would have had a Secure attachment to someone as a father figure and the perfect master for Anakin. Duel of the Fates quite fitting.

@C K The movies show so many times where Anakin came to the council or its members and asked them something that was reasonable, but difficult or inconvenient. Had they sided with him even once, it would have put the order on the path to balance. Instead they showed that they were completely unwilling to change and sealed their fate.
@feralphantom94
@feralphantom94 3 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair they didn't want to train him at all because they saw great fear in him. Deep down they knew how shit was gonna turn out, but caved in because Qui-Gon was going to train him regardless, he died, and then Obi-Wan was doing it as a favor of Qui-Gon. So the council (really just Yoda), gave their permission. Perhaps the reason they required him to do more was because he was "too old" for the training and knew that he needed extra work to be like a normal Jedi. In the end, he never could. Even his final turn to the light side, which I call BS, was still driven by his emotions and attachment to his son. He hadn't changed at all. He was always devoted to his family first. That's just the truth of it.

@@feralphantom94 the thing is tho, if they didn’t take him in Palpatine would have. He would’ve been raised as a sith. From the very beginning, the council’s arrogance was their undoing. Lucas has said the Qui-Gon was the father figure he needed, but he ended up dying. Why? Because the council was so sure of themselves that when one of their own requested back up after being attacked by a sith, their response was basically “nah bro, even tho you saw him we don’t believe you Bc we would’ve sensed it if there was a sith”.

Even in Episode 2 he's quick to temper and belittles him constantly for having *GASP* emotions. In episode 3 they've gone through hell together and are more equal, friends even, but by that point it's too late.
