I cut plastic car-wash barrels in half, yielding two large "buckets" drill holes and make rope handles. Cut a piece of old garden hose and slide over the rope before tying off, makes a nice handle. All of the slash goes into the barrels, then off to the fire pit. You can use the carwash "buckets" to store numerous slash bundles. -Two methods for tightening up the twine bundles: 1. Make a tourniquet out of a small stick, twist the twine a few turns and "lock" the tourniquet stick into the bundle or into the twine to keep it from unwinding. 2. Use a wedge shaped slash piece, after tying, stick the wedge shaped piece in the center of the bundle, and tap it home with a mallet, to tighten the bundle.

You have invented the woodhound/log.
@clubdoraoutdoorsandfirewoodАй бұрын
Hi Dan. I’d put 5-6 pieces in your bundles or bag as kindling and sell in a different colored bag. People seem to always have problems starting fires. See you tomorrow night.
@michaelprewitt806Ай бұрын
You could even throw the slash bundles in the boiler also. stack them in the shed.
@m9ovich785Ай бұрын
I never have any "Slash" left cause it all ends up in the Wood burner... Thanks Dan..
@chrisartman6168Ай бұрын
Two twine strings with a tail. Then take the tail over to the other string and tie it off. Makes a handle to carry the bundle. I make firewood bundles this way. Good luck.
@MrPiEaterАй бұрын
I move my slash bins (made of old pallets screwed together) close to the boiler and stuff all that material in when starting, in the shoulder seasons, or when I just stoke it up a bit to get the water temp up before I give it the big overnight wood. I use a couple sets of crossed 2x4s to make a pair of raised V shaped stands, toss smaller brush and sticks onto them, and bundle them similarly with twine so I can burn them off in the boiler. It's not a significant fuel source, but it gets rid of them pretty well.

Use them to start your fire in the wood boiler for the winter months. See someone already mentioned it when I came up with the idea. Even sell them for couple bucks or so.

Good morning Dan! Great idea!
@jimlashbrook5429Ай бұрын
You can always throw it in your wood boiler. Remember all wood burns. No it won't last for 12 hrs. but that gets rid of it. And the rip roaring fire will help burn the crap out of the pipe you had trouble with.
@roberta.brokaw3829Ай бұрын
Good idea Dan. When you put the slash bundle on the fire - stand is up on end and when the rope burns it will fall in a random pattern over the flames. Stay safe.
@Back40FirewoodАй бұрын
Ahh yes! Stand them up on end....that might make for a cool burn effect as well, like a Swedish candle, torch, or whatever they're called...lol

Good Day My Friend, I put all my Slash in Boxes to use in my Wood Stove Downstairs in the Basement. It keeps my Fire Going and if it goes out I can easily start it Back Up. I start saving it now so come October its all ready to go. I may Start up a Small Roadside Stand Honor System. Depends on what I can do. See you tomorrow Night Dan, stay Safe. Could you add like 5 pieces of slash per bundle? I know it's a drop in the bucket, but still would be getting rid of a little.
@TonnsfabricationАй бұрын
I save all the good burnable slash and put it in 275 gal IBC plastic tubs with the top cut off, no bark no dirt, big and small I sell it all. I then scoop it into bags and sell it as Fire Starter. I sell them for $5 a bag and also give away one free bag of fire starter with 4 bundle bags or a $ 20 or $30 box. Do I sell a bunch of them? No ...Do I sell them ? Yes people do buy them. It's using something that was otherwise trash as a marketing tool. People love free stuff, especially when they're buying something just to burn it.

For the stuff on the ground already. Being theres lots of stuff around, probably a hole in the ground. Light it off. Otherwise shove in boiler. 3rd option give away. . Granted im accustomed to lighting piles off the size of your house. With no structures within a 1/4 mile. And have equipment on hand to keep things under control. . Cool to see your products at the Hoosier raffle. One serious adventure for me wandering across the country for the event.

hi there back in the late 80s when i was doing bundles i also used bailing twine . i made a open cradle and tied it in 2 spots , i left the twine long then tied another round stick in the top for a handle ,remember this was when bundled firewood was a new thing and the was no plastic wrap , About the only thing was plastic strapping and binders ., i think you have a smart/good plan and should put it out on your stand , make a spot for it , what do you have to loose ,just time , good show john ps i still have the cradle some where in the back ,

@FirewoodInTheFieldАй бұрын
Nice!!! In my area I know people who sell bundles like that in their roadside stands next to "regular " bundles. I don't do it myself, as I don't have that much slash. But I think if you wanted to you could definitely sell those alongside your bags at your stand.
@votered1552Ай бұрын
Just put in all in IBC totes and save to burn in the outdoor boiler. Use during the day when your around to keep filling.

I have a similar dilemma in that I produce a lot more boiler block type material than I can use myself. Some sells, but not nearly enough. It's a hard pill to swallow, but I saw a video by Allen Family Firewood that said quit picking up the change when the dollars are right here. It comes to a point where perhaps dumping it is the best option. 🔥
@Back40FirewoodАй бұрын
Totally agree...after trying it out and seeing what would be involved to add this as an option to sell I don't think is worth it. It is great to burn, I just need to find a quick and simple way to do that.
@joshuahughes106Ай бұрын
If you like burning it, someone else will too! Missed opportunity I think. Kindling bundles are usually more expensive and smaller. If you use your regular firewood bags just increase price to make up for extra handling. People love good burning smaller firewood!

@billobermeyer660Ай бұрын
To possibly help with the process and to avoid having to tip the bundler over, create a false bottom inside the bundler so that the slash pieces stick out about 8", then tie with the twine. Never know until you try. The pieces would already be tied together if you did have to tip it over. Hope to see you tomorrow night.
@mikeh8228Ай бұрын

@MPH-iq5mdАй бұрын
Looks like a plan! I wonder if you could make the "slash bundles" using a velcro strap which you could undo and retain (and then reuse) as you empty the bundle into the fire. Just think that this might be a bit quicker when bundling.
@WilleysFirewoodАй бұрын
I thought the same about kindling until I started selling it and now I sell almost as much kindling as I do firewood from our roadside stands. It may seriously be worth a try.

Maybe you can use a piece of wire. Something like the guys that set up the rebar use they even have a cheap tool to spin tight the wire. Than when you clean the ashes you can remove the wire. You can make smaller bundles maybe the equivalent of a standard log to burn.

Hi Dan...interesting topic. Maybe try selling some of the better / consistent pieces in a loose bin or bundles, at a discounted rate from your stand. Check out the twine style tourniquet method for bundling on KZfaq. They get pretty tight. I usually bundle some of my odd splits and give them to my bulk wood customers for kindling.

How about quit using the particular machine or type of wedge that produces so much of this....slash is another word for waste. Whichever machine you are using to split wood that produces so much waste, needs to be your last resort machine, not your primary.
@Back40FirewoodАй бұрын
Nah, I'd much rather deal with the slash. The advantage of using the box wedge is far too high to not use it.
