It's a real shame, it's almost like some play dumb games (mental games, not the literal games) for views and get slapped for it from some. It's almost like if you want to go pedantic and really take things in the wrong way on purpose, maybe you should cross your tees, and dot your eyes when you're producing a video. It's almost like when you become the minmax kind of goblin... you lose the right when others point out your idiocy after you decry something that isn't even close to right... and that's taking it how you were taking it to begin with.

Minecraft Classic was still written in Java, it was a Java Applet which was able to be used in browsers. Obviously having a full executable format that could be loaded by a webpage is a massive security nightmare, so Java Applets went the way of the dodo.

Allowing executable code isn't the problem (WebAssembly is a "full executable format" too), the lack of sandboxing is. Java started by allowing everything, then banned individual APIs. So if they forgot to patch any one hole then the whole system would get hacked. Modern browsers (and Android kinda) are the opposite. They start with everything locked down, then expose permissions one by one. That makes them secure by default.

The reason is because Java originally could be used to make websites the same way JavaScript can, and JavaScript was designed to be compatible, so they just took the name and added "script" to the end.

@@nikkiofthevalley Actually, it's because Java was an extremely popular language in the 90s, with active marketing that had convinced all the businesspeople (programmers didn't care so much) that it was the best thing since sliced bread and they'd make a ton of money by switching to it. So the guy who made JS just used the name to shamelessly steal Java's reputation. Java Applets (like Minecraft Classic) were usable on the web, and Java Server Pages (why some URLs end in .jsp) existed for the server side as well, but neither was comparable to JavaScript. An Applet is just a standalone Java program that runs in the browser window, you can even download them and run them on their own with only a tiny bit of extra setup, while JS is run *by the browser itself* and has direct access to the webpage contents. Should've been called NetScript, really. It's less confusing, more descriptive, and also connects nicely to NetScape, the company that produced NetScape Navigator, which added JS as a competitive advantage. Though nowadays, since becoming an open standard, it's been officially renamed to ECMAScript, which is one of the worst names of any programming language so nobody calls it that.

🤓 on myself: "Java 16" + 1 would concatenate in Java as well. In most other languages you would have to cast the number, otherwise you get exception. Not even Python lets you do that without casting

Except it would produce an error as written, as Java is either an Object or a command... and if an object it would fail unless that 16 is some an argument to it, and if it was a command, the answer would be 17 ... the problem is he played a pedantic game... being as literal as possible for a splash text, and made assumptions based on sentence structure. Well, I suppose technically, in a sense... you were right about Java 16 + 1 = Java 161 in JavaScript This would be because in order for string concatenation in Java to work both arguments "Java 16" and 1 would have to strings whereas that isn't the case in JavaScript... because if you tried to add "Java 16" and 1 in Java you would get an error message.

Actually, long time ago there was a thing called Java Applets. As Fireship said, this was Java's attempt at stealing JavaScript's job. JavaScript is a language originally intended to create interactive elements for webpages and Java Applets were a way to integrate small apps written in Java into websites. And that time of Java Applets greatly intersects with the time of old Minecraft, so long time ago Mojang were officially providing Minecraft as a browser game on the Minecraft website. (and also there were illegal websites that allowed you to play Minecraft on them for free, but we don't talk about that) To clarify, this wasn't the only way to play Minecraft, since its beginning Minecraft were available as a standalone application too And also, to extent of my knowledge Java and JavaScript have pretty much no similarities with the exception of them both being programming languages with syntax inspired by the C programming language. JavaScript just kind of stole Java's name, maybe to confuse potential Java developers into using JavaScript
