"Van Gogh did some eyeball pleasers He must have been a pencil squeezer He didn't do the Mona Lisa That was an Italian geezer." Really funny lyrics, and like the best comedy, very clever too. They certainly don't write them like this anymore. Ian Dury was always a great wordsmith. The lyrics to "Reasons to be cheerful (part 3) and "What a waste" are pure poetical genius. Great to see you GP and thankyou

He dropped a bit of a bollock with the Noel Coward reference though, which he readily admitted to. The Gay Divorce is a thirties film starring Fred Astaire, not a play by Coward!

Nice one, thanks for reacting to this little gem. My brother had the 7" single and i used to listen to this back in the day, it made me giggle so much. Ian Dury was a bit of a clever bastard himself

Thanks GP, good to see you back. Always loved this one, I loved Ian Dury full stop.He was One of top signings to "Stiff" records, He died at 57 in March 2000, An obituary in The Guardian called him "one of few true originals of the English music scene" He was described by Suggs(Madness) as "possibly the finest lyricist we've seen". You can hear his influence with many early Madness track's the heavy sax, jaunty bass lines - brilliant fun, but pointed lyrics, The Album "New boots and panties" is a classic as is "Do it yourself" Not to forget The bus driver's prayer; Our Father, Who art in Hendon Harrow Road be Thy name Thy Kingston come Thy Wimbledon In Erith as it is in Hendon. Give us this day our Berkhampstead And forgive us our Westminsters As we forgive those who Westminster against us. Lead us not into Temple Station And deliver us from Ealing, For thine is the Kingston The Purley and the Crawley, For Iver and Iver Crouch End Thanks GP girl, take care

Ian was a master of lyrics and many of his songs could stand alone as poems. I love Sweet Gene Vincent and Clever Trevor (which is a real tongue-twister)

Ian Dury & The Blockheads were brilliant. "Reasons To Be Cheerful" was another great track. I keep thinking of "The Nag's Head Pub" & the cast of "Fools & Horses" after hearing the song you just played. The theme song of "Fools & Horses" sounds like something that Ian Jury would have composed!

His music was always many cuts above what the english/gringo folk were doin' then . Though I always had a soft spot for Nina Hagen and Wendy O' Williams . Yet the Tubes , Oingo Boingo and Wall of Voodoo made some thought provoking music also . Gabba Gabba Hey !!!😃

As a 10-11 year old, I was told off for playing this song. The single it's the B side of belonged to my older brother. I fully intended to play the A side, (Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick), but got it wrong! My Mam wasn't very amused.

The bit about "probably got help from their mum" I think was a bit of self depreciation along the lines of "I couldnt do what they did - so they must have had helop". Of course Ian was one of teh clever bastards - exceedingly so. His lyrics and wit indicate him being very clever, but if you ever watch an interview with him, there's no question he was a clever one.

@@gpreactions3194 I didn't mean to be quite as curt as I seemed sweetie. I just hated the thought of you feeling that you might have offended someone, that's all. Being " offended " is all the rage these days, and everyone is looking over their shoulders in case a " snowflake " is watching. Try listening to " Little Does She Know", by The Kursaal Flyers. You'll love it! I wish you rainbows my friend.

One really funny thing I noticed in the video. Among all those famous faces was Daniel O'Donnell - the pride of Donegal and a drip of a country and western singer (to this day he is unbearable - to the point of being funny...the way he talks is even funnier. Check him out). So I don't know who's insertion that was into the video but it turns out that Ian Dury's mum was from Donegal. Curious.
