Demonstrating ground loop in my home theater system. There was a bad buzzing when turning up the volume on my onkyo audio receiver. My setup:
Onkyo HT-S3400
LG TV
Computer
XBox (but it didn't cause any issues neither did it have a ground prong)
=====================
Update: It turns out I was able to solve this problem by getting a better HDMI Cable. I don't fully understand how the HDMI cable could transmit a ground loop buzz through my receiver, but getting a better quality cable helped.

Thanks a lot. This helped me figure out that it was my 3 pin monitor causing the static noise in my headphones.

You need to connect your ground signal off of your stereo there's a section on the back of your stereo that has the word ground on it and that's a signal connection. It's on the left hand top corner. You need to connect a wire off of that and ground it to something so that it breaks the signal loop. And then that problem would go away. And then you can plug in whatever you want to it off your plug-in strip. Could be the issue also you should try investing in a more expensive and better grounded extension strip or plug that directly into the wall by itself off of that strip because that's where the grounds causing the issue. So yeah I would think about that. But the ground connection on the left hand corner of the receiver you can run a wire out of there and then you can put that ground wire I've seen people run them outside and directly into the ground to break the ground. Something to look into is that's how you will fix that issue is by running that receiver plug-in by itself off that strip or you could ground that receiver and that would stop that problem by connecting that corner ground signal. Port to something.

I had issues like that and I end up getting the panamax surge protector it's a noise filtering electric-only supplies of clean energy

I looked it up and it actually may prove to be a safety hazard if your device doesn't have a fuse. The ground loop interrupter can only handle a certain amount of current and in the case of a lightning strike or a large spike, the ground loop interrupter can actually fuse open effectively acting as if you have no ground at all. The ground loop interrupter device has to be capable of handling a lightning strike and the ones on the market (at least the one I have seen) doesn't handle that.

Can anyone who maybe knows about stereo systems tell me about my subs. I have two, both are self powered One (Yamaha) is plugged into the amp and the other sub(Polk) is plugged into the first sub (the Yamaha). I get a bad humming on the second one, when I unplug it from the first one and wait a few seconds and replug it works for a while but then the humming comes back. Any thoughts?

I haven't lived in that apartment in over 7 years! Moving to a new place with new wiring does the trick. :)

I'm having an issue with my receiver. I have a constant high pitched hum on my receiver whenever I use it and have tried multiple proposed solutions as proposed by the internet. I tried legitimately placing it on the ground, flipping the plug, checking my input connections, removing the FM antenna and looking through the vent at the capacitors (which look fine). What on Earth can I do now?

Hi +Julian West , first thing I recommend doing is isolating the issue. You need to figure out what device is making the noise. Unplug all the devices from the receiver and turn it on. Does the noise still happen? Does it only happen at high volumes? If the noise is gone, you know it isn't the receiver, but one of the devices connected to it. Plug everything in 1 at a time until the noise comes back. The one that makes the noise is your culprit and you can further investigate into how to address it.

I know it's the receiver. Even with the volume all the way down and with no inputs plugged in it always makes the buzzing noise. I also know it's not a ground loop.

+Julian West One last thing I would try is to take the receiver and plug it in at a completely different location (like even a friend's house). If it is still buzzing, then I would have to conclude your device is just faulty. If not, you may have really strong radio/electrical interference or noise on your AC line. If that's the case, you may be able to get a power conditioner to get rid of the problem.

Well, after moving it to my new house, the buzzing is still there, but it's a bit less noticeable.

You need a noise cancelling powerbar. Monster makes them, I'm sure there are others. Expect to pay about $200. Why? It separates and cleans up electrical noise from not only the wall, but from the other components of your home theater system. I had one on an old big screen set up about 10 years ago and I can assure you it was black and white difference in picture and sound!

The New devices have floating grounds. If I measure rms voltage from my blue ray to ground it is 58 rms volts. maybe on of your devices have ground wire but not all.

Jacek Brauner Thanks for the info.. switching to higher quality HDMI cables eliminated the noise... I wonder if the old HDMI cable had the ground wire (shielding) connected? I'm just glad it is gone and I can turn up my receiver without this annoying hissing!
