I tried to push my Skyfire to a disastrous affect. Did the machine fail and crash or was it something else? Watch and find out!
End the end, the second time was a charm and the part did come out but could it have come out better?

It also has to do with your ER collets. Cheap ones only grab the tip. Buy the straight collet style. Looks similar to a 5C collet.

I also learned that I didn't have the ER collet torqued to spec.. as my previous ER collet experience was with a wood cutting router and torque spec is not needed in material that soft.....

I left my Surprised Face at home! Did you look up the correct Torque for the ER Collet Chuck? More than most people think, the whiners who think ER slips usually haven't read the instructions :D

I am coming from a CNC Router with the collet on spindle (you can't really torque those down), I admit ignorance at the time that this happened.. I did learn from it and torque to spec now.

You're also misinformed on the form tap. They work well in everything but plastics and wood. They're the best for titanium and stainless steel. Don't form tap when it enters a bore or you have thin walls.

Tip: ER collect holders are not the best for roughing. Nothing beats a solid holder.

Yah, this is something I have learned.. I also learned that the torque requirements on a ER Collet are MUCH greater than I was expecting.. that collet should have been torqued down to 100ft/lb... on my CNC Router getting anywhere near "spec" would mean never being able to remove a bit... But hey learning and loving it..

I second that. You’ll find that most tooling will have a flat for a set screw on a solid holder. When you insert your tool, find that flat with the set screw, back the set screw off a little then pull the tool down and re tighten the set screw. This will prevent that tool from being pulled out of the holder as you found out the tool naturally wants to especially on aggressive cuts.

Set screws are only good if you're bore is tight. Once they wear out theyre trash. ER collets are a lot better. Every 0.0001 of runout decreases life by 10%

why dont you use the coolant ring instead?
@HandsonCNC

I have mixed feelings about the coolant ring, and it really doesn't have the angles for when I am tapping..

You don't need coolant for the face mill. Just keep the chip load at 0.0005-0.0023

The feed rates you recommend are usually too slow for carbide inserts. They'll just rub themselves to an early death. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendation for feeds, speeds, and engagement for best results.

Why did you let it run when it sounded so bad?

Wasn't sure where the chatter was from, and if it was from the machine and not the collet I thought I would be able to finish the part... Again, coming from an aluminum frame router, chatter is just a "thing" when it rears it ugly head... Chatter on its own is not a reason to end a cut... (well not an a CNC router) just a thing that affects finish and tool wear.. Given this was roughing, I didn't mind a bad finish.. . Ultimately, I was just wrong on how I read that..
