.
. See all the equipment we put on the airplane, and inquire about your own project! newviewtech.com/aoa/ We are about to fly from Alaska, all the way to Wisconsin, to get our flight school Cessna 172 upgraded to IFR. It'll bring this 1963 172 into the 21st century with new avionics and a completely revamped panel.
But, we've got to actually get down there. And it so happens that we're going to be going in the winter time. We need a bunch of survival gear to go with us, as it's the smart thing to do not only any time of year, but especially during the winter.
We'll be flying through the Yukon Territory, the Canadian Rockies, Alberta, Montana, North Dakota and more. It's cold, it's just REALLY cold, and we need to make sure we have the survival kit available. just in case something were to go wrong.
In this video we'll take you through that process, show you all the survival gear we're taking, and even talk a bit about weight and balance. All of these decisions and more drive what we need to do. We're certainly not taking this huge flight lightly. Literally, and figuratively.
Some would say carrying this much emergency equipment is overkill... that is until you actually need it, then it's a dire situation.
Want to be a pilot? Take online ground school and do checkride prep with us at www.AngleofAttack.com

FINALLY! Men who know proper preparation. Every time I see one of those “I Shouldn’t Be Alive” type shows that feature a plane crash in in-climate conditions the narrator always says “thinking they were just going for a caribou sightseeing excursion the men wore T-shirts, jeans & flip flops; the ladies, summer dresses and sandals.” I scream and throw things at the TV. Then put on my snow suit and sit there, on the sofa, in silent protest.

Axe, Hatchet, Knives, Shotgun/Rifle (you can leave them at the border and pick them back up flying home). I was a bush pilot out of Williams Lake BC. Everywhere I flew was bush...we kept some survival gear on board that changed with the season.

Chris great job on the video. This video and flying with you the other day has me thinking I perhaps should carry more than what I do. I don’t fly across Alaska and in to Canada for 3000nm but Northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota where I do fly can be a bit remote as well. For what you were planning here I would not say you are overboard at all. Better to have it and not need it then the other way around. Thank you for the effort you put into giving back to the aviation community and for taking the time for my wife and I the other day greatly appreciated. The photos are beautiful. Have a great weekend..

LOTS OF DRYER LINT STUFFED IN A SANDWHICH BAG- EXCELLENT FIRE STARTER- USE WITH STRYKERS OR MATCHES- FUEL LIGHTERS SOMETIMES DONT WORK IN VERY COLD TEMPS. ALSO SURVIVAL STRAWS, ALLOW YOU TO DRINK FROM ANYWHERE.

Butane boils at about 31f, all you need is to keep it warm in an inside pocket. (iso-butane has a bit higher vapor pressure, maybe 20f boil iirc, but is not common in pocket lighters.) They are mechanical devices however and so they can still have other failures.

Regarding your fuel bags. The plastic nozzle that I see next to the bag is very susceptible to cracking making it useless when you need it. Airframes sells a valved nozzle which I highly recommend. Throw away the plastic ones. Also, make sure you have extra o-rings and secure them with compatible product of your choice within the cap so that they don’t fall out.

been there done that. yep - so cold the snow crunches underfoot and smoke goes straight up from a chimney when its around 20-30 below (and colder). WHen its that cold u should be breathing through a wool scarf etc. to pre-heat the air prior to the lungs or u could freeze them = dead.

What about icing condtions? 172s don't have much anti-ice stuff
@angleofattack
@angleofattack 2 жыл бұрын
Icing is a visible moisture thing. That means, freezing rain or flying in the clouds. We won't be doing either one on this trip. Even snow doesn't really stick and create icing. In fact, when it's REALLY cold, the air can't hold a ton of moisture well, so usually extra cold means extra dry.
