If there is a better way to make bread and butter pudding, I certainly haven't found it yet.

Bread and butter pudding:
Sliced bread 12 slices
Eggs 5
MIlk 425ml - 3/4 pint 1 1/2 cups
Double or heavy cream 285ml - 1/2 pint 1 cup
Caster sugar 50g - 1.7oz
Sultanas 50g - 1.7oz
Unsalted butter 100g - 3.5oz
spice of choice 1 pinch (I did Cinnamon)
Vanilla 1 pod or 1 tsp paste
The Custard (creme Anglaise)
Double or heavy cream 250ml - 0.4 pint 1/2 cup
Milk 250ml - 0.4 pint 1/2 cup
Caster sugar 50g - 1.7oz
Egg yolks 6
Vanilla 1 pod or tsp paste
Powdered sugar and apricot jam to finish

You are so right; this is one of the best B&B Backed Custards on-line. I don't do any of the "extras" - the simpler, the better for me. My Mum used to stack the bread not flat like you but on the sides.* if you can understand that.

We used to serve a panettone bread and butter pudding many years in an Italian restaurant I worked in. Somehow it's is even better cold than it is hot

That's a clever idea. My family is Italian (as is my wife's) and we always made fun of Panettone as the gift that no one ever eats. Wish someone gifted me some now so I could make bread pudding with it!

Man I love bread pudding. My mom made it, often, when I was a kid. As she got older, she went for an easier recipe and started using raisin bread. Saved some work.

I know that you found a wider audience due to TikTok, but you already had a KZfaq channel and it was good. You should try it with baileys and chocolate chips ( callibaut 58% coco). Then I use brown sugar and stick it under the salamander for caramelisation. I use it here in the restaurant and I use a baileys creme anglaise with it. It sells out on the ala carte every night.

I second this dessert is a family fav for us! Just a tip I buy Raisin Toast/Spiced Fruit Bread when it's marked down (can also use fruit cake dark or light that's gone a little dry) freeze it and use that for Bread nd Butter Pudding. Also add grated Nutmeg into pudding milk custard like Egg Nog. All the best from Australia

In Sweden we eat something that called “ägg ost “ it’s egg cheese it’s like a omelette but cold and sweet google it it’s the best we eat it instead of bread pudding

This is one of my all time favourite desserts but even here in the UK it doesn't get the air time it deserves! My own twist is to add some Bailey's Irish cream to the custard used to soak the bread...it's so good it will make your knees fold 😁

Pro Tip: Twist up a towel lengthwise, and then make a circle with it and put your bowl in the circle. It will keep your bowl steady while you whisk with one hand and pour with the other.

The only improvement but I have for this wonderful recipe is to take your bread out the night before and let it sit out on the counter and get stale. It doesn’t make it as mushy. Oh, I am instead of Apple cards are use real maple syrup drizzle. Either way though 😋

Reminds me of my mum's bread and butter pudding with real vanilla pod custard! Heaven with an espresso. You could try soaking raisins in Marsala wine (used in tiramisu). Enjoy folks.
