I think thats to do with the fact that US hardly ever had an enemy at its door after the union. The closest was japan and that still pacific, not mainland US. And it still has by far the largest military budget, and constantly wages war and invades other countries, killing millions of civilians. Ofcourse the soldiers arent the one to blame (except those who committed war crimes) but thats the reason many in the west are anti military.

@@glowiedetector NATO deployments are always defensive? Sure we invaded Iraq in 2003 and Afghanistan in 2001 but Afghanistan was in retaliation when a foreign enemy did attack us. Other than that there has not been any major offensives carried out by the US military or most western militaries for that matter. But let’s see what the east has done, Chechnya in 1999, invasion of crimea in 2014 and the most recent one in 2022 that’s still ongoing, their intervention in Syria, and countless other wars in the Caucasus region. North Korea has continually violets the DMZ in the East China Sea against South Korea as well as the test of missiles over Japan which has violated their airspace. China has been doing buildup and violations of ROC air and naval borders. Sure the Israeli war in Gaza can be considered as an offensive but only due to the surprise attack by Hamas which would mean its retaliation like the war in Afghanistan was after 9/11. Iran has continually supported terrorist groups in the missile east and has recently supported the sinking of cargo ships in the Red Sea and Persian gulf. Serbia has massacred citizens of Kosovo as well as still supporting srpska in Bosnia. Pakistan continuously tries to enforce their claim over the Kashmir region.

Speaking as a Marine veteran, they put us through rigorous training, our test on training day 55 determines whether or not we continue forward with training. It’s an accumulation of all the knowledge, all the classes, learning and late night studying we do in the squad bays to prep for that very moment. Furthermore our education doesn’t stop there, in our combat school, A-school’s and fleet, we learn everything from torque specs on an AAV’s drain plug to ballistic coefficients of our weaponry. We may be known as the crayon eating combat wombats of the military but I tell ya what…you wanna see the best businessmen and leaders outside of their billet/MOS? Veterans! I started training and taking courses in both short-range shooting and long-distance at known and unknown ranged targets. Soldiers should deserve much more respect. If it was up to me, I'd rake him as a 1 for most intelligent, as your survival and educational skills have to be honed to the peak to be an effective soldier, as you're not just fighting, but adapting, assessing the situation and learning things along the way. Military is not a joke, I can tell you that from being a Cadet. These people don't see it as a big deal because THEY'RE not the ones affiliated with the military. Once you join the military, it's a whole different story. Every person's chosen path has their ups and downs. Even if you're a "PHD biotech scientist", if you're thrown into the military on the frontlines, you're not going to do well, because you have no experience. Same goes for a soldier, if a soldier were to be thrown into the science field, they would most likely not go far ALSO because they don't have experience. Every path has their hardships, the "I'm better than you because I'm doing this" is not related to these topics.

They have to learn how to number coordinates using geometry etc in order to finally be sent out into the field because their lives are literally at stake.
