"If You Can Do Your Job From Home, Be Scared. Be Very Scared"...

...working from home is dangerous, especially for young workers... "Offices are where young professionals establish relationships with mentors, colleagues, and mates."
If you are young and ambitious, get to the office. But, even if you are productive at home, you will only be promoted if you learn how to build relationships.

This is true for people who are not subject matter experts and are doing repetitive knowledge work. you're not replacing me with an offshore or a 25-year-old with a bunch of energy. I also think we should be careful making a blanket statement that trust and relationships aren't being built while you are working from home. This is also untrue. I work on a team of five people, one in China, two in Europe, two in the United States, and one in Canada. They can get rid of us, and then they can figure out how to manage their $200 million per year refresh. Go ahead and get AI to do that.

Very true. I'm sitting in my office today with one other person. My 70+ team is spread around the globe. As I often say, "generalizations are always wrong."

Hmm, I’m not sure I agree here. The implication I took from this video is that building relationships is not possible (or at least significantly more difficult) when not physically in the office together. Having worked from home for four years now, I have forged and strengthened MANY great relationships that honestly wouldn’t have happened in the office. Is the water cooler chit chat gone? Sure. But in its place are great opportunities to connect with coworkers in virtual meetings. I think building relationships in office and remotely are both very possible if we put forth the effort.

I rather have a work from home society as opposed to a commute to work way of life. We must embrace technology and seek evolve and adapt.

Rather than asking a lot of questions(that format can feel like interrogation), I’d recommend to do cold readings(instead of asking “what is your job?”, say “you working at ...(whatever job you can assume), aren’t you?”). And one more thing(if you’re willing to take an advice from random guy from the KZfaq), when you speak, breath through your mouth, I learned it year ago from an experienced speaker that works on tv. It helps to convey the message more effectively. To make it a natural habit, when I received this advise, I started to read out loud, 3-4 pages a day(of any book that I had nearby), focusing specifically on breathing through mouth. With respect, Sir.

Thank you for sharing this. I am a big fan of Scott Galloway. I am more a fan of Conor Neill though :) The thing that some people in these comments don't seem to understand is that we can all be replaced. In fact, every 100 years or so, we are all replaced with new humans. From home or not, your job will one day go on without you.

Great perspective. Scott likes to say things directly and clearly (a bit like Jordan Peterson!) I tend not to be so direct myself... We are not only replaceable, but part of our leadership is to continually replace ourselves and move on to something bigger...

BS - at the end of the day most people are just a number in a cell on a spreadsheet in any company. Been through enough co. to know this as i have been on both sides. No loyalty when that time comes, better to spend time building relationships with family and friends. A company does not care about you, only what it can get out of you. Get in, learn, extract and then get out looking to build your own business whatever that may be.

Such bullshit. I'm making six figures as a software engineer working from home. Building relationships is not part of my job. I've been following for a while, but this is bullshit.

Mostly disagree... yes, there are those who use the working from home to stay in the confort zone (just like they do so while in the office). generalization always leads to oversimplifying
@faithyork3355

Totally disagree. Said by someone who has probably never worked extensively from home. Building relationships, even complex ones, is absolutely possible virtually. All of those relationship recommendations are totally possible from a virtual setting.

What an asinine video. I've enjoyed some of your content, but this is absurd. A relationship is not a job. A writer, for instance, can do his job at home perfectly well. In fact, it's better for him at home. Are writers replaceable? Teaching can be performed online. Numerous jobs, because of technology, can be done perfectly well online. Additionally, not all jobs need "relationships." Most creative jobs, for instance, don't require an office or outside connections. The original statement, therefore, should be qualified and absolutely does not have universal application.
