My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

My alarm goes off at 4:40am so I can get up, get my coffee, wake up for a few minutes, and then my "writing time" is from 5am-6am. It doesn't mean I actually get any writing done during that hour, it just means I set aside that time for working on my novel - whether it's re-reading/editing what I've already got, brainstorming, or just keeping connected to my project. And some days I get a lot of writing done and I'm inspired enough to write later in the day as well, if I can find the time and energy later. Some days I can only get in 30 minutes, but the important thing is to make time every day. It's my favorite part of the day and is honestly fulfilling in ways nothing else is. :)

"Think about your story constantly" Bro I am never not thinking about it One thing I like to remind myself is that working on my story is my main thing. Even though my job physically takes up a majority of my waking hours, it's not where I am at mentally or emotionally most of the time. I'm always looking forward to working on the story, it's so prevalent in my day-to-day that I can't even fathom calling it my side thing. Writing is a hobby, sure, but my story is definitely one of the main aspects of my life.

I love that you admitted that!!! Me Too!!! I am so glad to know that your story consumes you too.🤣 My characters are some of my favorite people. I enjoy talking about them; if I get the chance. I thought that might be disturbing, for others. However, I have found that "some" people let me and will actually ask questions about my book/s. Not family though. (I can't quite figure that out, but it's okay.) I do so badly want to become an author, but at this time, I am a writer and a creator. And, that makes me happy.

I talk to myself as well! 🤣 sometimes i am shocked even at my own plot, is so hilarious. I still have this story that seems cool and amazing but i don't know how to put it into words. Is like i can but no, such a conflict! Thanks abby, you have inspired me to start writing more and more. I have done stories but i just end up deleting them because i get like tired or get another idea and mixed them up! Still thanks, i'll try and take this steps to improved, have seen all your other vids too. Amazing! Never thought someone has words i cannot say...

I am trying to work on writing more but I really want to learn piano. So I planned to work on writing in the summer (I home school my children as well so that's when I have more free time) and I have been practicing piano now. But the exact advice that Abbie is giving about not taking the need to do it every day so seriously is helping me with that. I used to just give up practicing something like that when I wouldn't have time for it everyday, but it's really not a reason to give up and I'm still making progress this way. Also, organizing to find your free time, YESSSS! It's there, find it!

I have been working on the same book for 5 years.🤦🏼‍♀️ I have created about 12+ more book ideas since then. Whenever a new idea comes to mind, I immediately write down all the characters, scenes, and dialogue for the new book/s. Therefore, I write according to whomever speaks to me at the time. It sounds chaotic, but I can not seem to control who's taking over real estate in my head.

Things I don't need to do? Like watching Abbie videos? Forget that, I like hearing you talk, you and Kate both, I'm a total addict. I'm constantly thinking about my story. Thinking about book 2, book 3, book 4, I'm still working on book 1. So distracting. Got plenty of time though, thanks to a car wreck back in August, I won't be able to afford an editor for a few more years. I don't want to go further into debt for a project that may not pay out. So yeah, with any luck I'll have all of them at least outlined before then. Progress is slow, but progress is progress.

I am very young and unable to join any patreon community due to my parents rules, I have been writing a story, I’ve been planning it. I’ve planned the plot, the characters and their desire, fear and misbelief. I feel like I’ve done most the stuff I need but when I get to the blank page all my inspiration seems to fly out the window, I’ve rewritten the first five paragraphs like three times, it kills me because I have so many ideas but I struggle getting them out on the page. I’ve written before but none of my ideas have felt this strong, I’m really stuck and need answered but I cannot join what I need to answer these questions. The amount of book ideas I have written in my notes is absurd, I just can never get them on the page😢I LOVE writing it brings me joy and when I am not currently writing something I lose my mind. I love Abbie she’s so great and I hope I can get past this writers block❤❤😖oy

A writer might have to sacrifice something they do like watch a TV show on KZfaq videos. You can write during your lunch hours at work or late at night while your family is sleeping. 30 min to 60 mins of writing is better than no writing a day. Is writing your passion and a career? How important is finishing your book?

For some reason I’m the most mentally productive for writing while at work, because my job is very mindless. Due to that, I constantly think of my stories, and started bringing notepads, and practically write chapter by chapter by hand. It’s not the official written document, but it’s something.

Frist of all I just want to say that I love this channel. Finding time to write is hard. I have a full time job and need to find space for my writing all the time. I sit down on odd occations even though I'm not inspired, somehow I transpire words anyway. Even though I didn't think I was going to write, I do. It all starts with one sentence. With little time on my hands I think you have to push through the uninspired phase by force. It works for me anyway. Thank you for your inspiring videos!

I'm a disabled veteran. I have wanted to write a book for most of my life. In 2020, the VA sent me back to school to get out of a job that was aggravating my disabilities. Since I had to make a change as I entered my 50's, and step out of a 20-year career, I chose writing. My children are raised now. My wife is still working. Why not go back for writing? I graduated from college last year and left my job soon afterward so I can write. I have all the time in the world, right?! Well, I should. But I don't write every day like I have been told. I let many other things get in the way, even if it is KZfaq videos. One problem I face in my current project is that I started it for a grade in college and I don't know where to take it. I never had a clearcut ending in mind. Now, I think my characters are wandering around, lost in the woods with a very powerful adolescent Elf girl to save. 🤣 I seriously need to come up with an outline to get it back on track. Trying to think it through is causing me to stall out with writing. But I have stepped away from this story to focus on turning a screenplay that I wrote into a short story. It's a neat little challenge.

I recommend the Pomodoro-technique for getting the stuff you need to get done more effectively. It doesn't require calender blocking or anything else that could lead to overthinking to all those chronic overthinkers out there. Or people who are mentally ill and sometimes just don't get anything done because they're having a bad day which would lead to the whole schedule crumbling to dust if you're planning for several days ahead :D

This is good advice (the beginning especially). I had to figure this out on my own recently 😅 I was majoring in psychology, but I realized that even though I like psychology, it was only ever a backup to writing. Because I have so much passion and excitement and creativity for writing and storytelling. And since being a novelist doesn't require a degree, i was getting a BS of psychology just to have options. But I figured out that i would HATE psychology if I majored in it and put my writing aside. So i talked to my counselor and switched to an English major with a focus on creative fiction writing (one of my main hang ups with an English degree was that i HATE creative nonfiction and essays and most English classes are a lot of that) I'm taking like 5 writing classes next year but I'm already so much happier about it. TL;DR Abby is 100000% right that you need to do what you love and cut out the things that aren't helpful. I love this channel ❤

appreciate your videos. somehow i've figured out how to write on my 15 min breaks at work, sometimes I manage to fire out almost a page but to get to this point it took discipline lol. that, and about a half hour of instrumental music before each break to clear my mind. keep up the good work! ps: I have a good video idea for you, but I would also like to hear your thoughts on a one-line summary of my story. if you reply ill pitch the line, but heres the video idea anyway: using symbolism as a deeper tool for storytelling. not only foreshadowing, but creating archetypes within your own story and using real world baggage to help readers draw subconscious conclusions. i can go into more detail, but a good simple example would be a smart character with owl-like descriptions in the details since in the real world owls can be viewed as knowledge keepers. probably a terrible example lol anyway good day!

Abbie, you remind me so much of Lizzy Bennet 🤗 You are so passionate about what you believe and what you do and your smile is a lot like (2005) her's. plus, I love her and I love you. you just kinda have the same energy.

I can't believe I'm not alone in "thinking about my story constantly and talking about it to myself" !!! It's literally how I work when I can't write

About the third tip: the things I usually do in my free time that I should be pushing aside to write, I started doing them as a reward after hitting a certain goal count, e.g.: 1 episode of Friends after one thousand words in, or go out with my sister after 1500 words in, and so on so forth. Helps. A. Lot!!

I wish I was better at the time/color blocking system. I see it and almost revolt against it bc it’s there telling me I have to do this haha like I’m rebelling the time clock tick tock… time/color blocking mockery be damned! 😂 great video thanks you so much!! Always great stuff!! ❤

I am currently working on a beginning scene for a science fiction genre prose for a college class, and I need some help. Basically it's about a combat android living on an anti-matter powered 'generation ship' orbiting the moon. How do I make it feel like a science fiction story, since I usually work on fantasy fiction?
@starghost777
@starghost777 Жыл бұрын
Science fiction is about futuristic technology, fantasy is about magick. Do some research for sci-fi themes. It needs to seem scientifically plausible.

@@starghost777 I only need to do a beginning scene. It's about an android living on a generation ship in the year 2499 when humanity has become extinct and who dreams of exploring earth It features technologies like anti-matter engines and replicators as the main ones, as well as the advanced androids themselves. I took heavy inspiration from Nier Automata

If I can do it anyone can - I homeschool my 6 kids high school down to a 3 yr old. I published my first book in 2020 and at that time it meant waking up early.

Yes, I spend entirely too much time on my phone or watch shows in the evening. To be honest, I am on the computer all day to work, I don't have the energy to type anymore. Wish there was some brain to text programme that writes down as I think about the story while I take a walk.

I know, don't use other authors as barometer, but this is a good comparison: most great works of writing took years to complete. Where the Crawdads Sing (10 years). Cormac McCarthy's latest (16 years from his last book and 40 years in development). I would argue that five to ten years for a novel is more typical than not. At least for the great works So, don't beat yourself up if it is taking time. Best yourself up if you are not putting in the effort. :)

I have a friend of mine who runs two successful businesses: contractor and catering. He also runs a small farm. And he does a bunch of crafty creative things. And he raised three kids. I once asked him how he finds the time to do all of this. His answer: "Some people spend their time watching TV." And he left it at that. A powerful statement. Examine what you spend time on and trim the fat.
