The discussion about buying video games in stores back when we were kids definitely brought back a lot of memories. I remember buying Pitfall! at Toys r Us for my Atari 2600. It was almost always sold out! It was such a big deal at the time to get that game. It was my favorite game from that time. My first system - Atari 2600 - often gets overlooked in the discussion about video game consoles. I loved the Atari 2600 because I could play all the arcade games at home without the intimidation factor of playing at the arcade. The big kids would pick on you, scam you, and bully you at the arcades. At home I could play all the Asteroids and Defender I wanted without fear of the neighborhood bully stealing my quarters. LOL!

Concerming game pass deals, Phil Spencer already said that they make a different specific deal for each game. It's not a fix % or a number of hours played, or a number of players.... it's a different specific deal each time. Unfortunately we don't know what it was in that specific case.

I dig the pixel art, I will start with that. I do wish I could get a true 2D sonic game with beautiful hand drawn art with non 2.5D backgrounds. Think what they did with Streets of Rage 4, but sonic. I think what he's trying to say, he's looking for a detailed circa 32 bit age where the pixel wasn't so harsh. Dotemu's Wonder Boy and SOR 4 are great examples of games I would love to see more of. Polished hand drawn graphics with old school genres like shmups, platformers, and beat em ups.

I never played Ratchet and Clank series up until Rift Apart. Trying to remember a game I played strictly for graphics. I will say the reason I picked up R&C was the ps5 graphics after hearing how stunning it was. Graphics never will be a deal breaker. However, going back playing most ps1, ps2, n64 games are almost unplayable on original consoles w/o a CRT TV.

Growing up I had it so good. My grandmother was into video games just like me. She loved 2d Zeldas any racing game any kart racer fighting games of course. There’s nothing like bringing your friends over after school and having your grandmother kick their ass in Tekken 3. Anyway whenever we went to the mall we always went by the video game store to see if there was anything we wanted. So one time it was my birthday and I wanted final fantasy. The lady goes in the back she goes to get final fantasy the one I requested for the in ES mistakingly she grabs the wrong one she grabs the new Final Fantasy for the SNES. FFIV. My grandmother notices it and doesn’t say a word me my big mouth I tell her no you have the wrong game I want the one for the NES. She takes it back and brings me the older Final Fantasy. My grandmother never let that go for over 20 years she let me have it.

There could be a number of reasons why PCF didnt receive royalties, either way it sucks. The 3 things I can think of are: 1. Could be because the games sold didnt meet the threshold, and subscription downloads traditionally dont count so yeah, any money received via Gamepass wouldnt go towards the digital and physical sales. 2. Phil Spencer himself said he and his team are still unsure of Gamepass as far as its deals with games and companies go and not everyone's deal is the same. So whatever deal they have with Gamepass didnt necessarily help meet the goal even if it does count towards "sales" 3. As scummy as it sounds, Square may be withholding the money because of major sales losses on other projects, especially Avengers. Doesnt sound like PCF are in the know and they arent even aware of their own sales so itd be easy for Square to say they didnt meet the requirement if they aren't even sharing the info to begin with.

I'm not very into shooters, but got into the game for it's premise/story, and enjoyed it being designed as a cohesive game instead of a GaaS/ongoing game. Pretty sure it was a doomed game that was turned around by Game Pass, which is why Square Enix has already said the franchise likely had a future... although maybe not if PFC won't work with them again.

I hope Square Enix aren't doing the dodgy Hollywood thing of cooking the books by faking on their records that the marketing costs are astronomical so that the game/movie can never make a profit. That way they don't have to pay People Can Fly royalties because on paper they can say that the game never made any money.

@jenova1st Yeah I forgot the name for a minute. I know you're right, but when I played the demo I got a strong vibe of a grind. That's why I didn't proceed. We need more and more finite single-player experiences. I always keep playing the original halo trilogy, Fallout 3, GTA VC, SA, IV, Assassin's creed campaigns and etc, the fun in those games comes from not having an end game and real stories that deviate from the grind. Live service or not, Outriders was a grind!

On Outriders: I've played the game once - mostly coop - on game pass. The story was tedious if not stupic. There was nothing to it. Mechanics were great but there's nothing for me to return. Unfortunately, it seems, its example says a lot on micro-transanctions, dlc and season passes. I honestly don't understand why there weren't any or why they don't plan any for the near future. Also, why didn't they self-publish and go ahead with game pass on their own?

Gamepass is the most ridiculous deal in gaming with so many day one releases appearing there. Which is smart for 3rd party games like Back 4 Blood if you’re into it and wanna keep playing after it goes off, then people will buy it at a discount. Single player 3rd party games are different though and not sure what deals they work out. I would have to believe that the developers are compensated but if the publishers are doing dirty stuff then it will come back to haunt them. Like Sam said they will go with a different publisher for the next game they make. We all want value but those people deserve to be compensated fairly. Edit: The times are changing for entertainment in general and business models are in flux. I would think that contracts would be a different beast these days, but how many people are getting screwed over from older contracts? We live in dirty times.
