Illia Ponomarenko is a Ukrainian journalist, war reporter and defence analyst formerly writing for The Kyiv Independent. In January 2023, given his prominent role in reporting from the conflict, he was described by Der Spiegel as "likely the best-known Ukrainian after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy". He has written an account of his experiences reporting on the war - I Will Show You How It Was: The Story of Wartime Kyiv (to be released in August 2024).
----------
BOOK SUMMARY:
In late February 2022, a series of missiles and rocket strikes began falling upon Ukraine, as the Russian military barreled over the border and fanned out across the country. First they took Chernobyl, then Kherson, then Mariupol. Time stood still as the world waited for Ukraine to flatten underneath the boot of its neighbor.
Meanwhile, on the front lines in the capital city, Kyiv Independent reporter Illia Ponomarenko was seeing a different story on unfold: after months-years-of waiting for this long-feared attack, Ukraine was fed up and ready to fight back. The Russians bogged down hard in combat east and west of Kyiv. They got exhausted. They screwed up logistics. They sustained heavy losses. Their unbelievably overconfident blitz was failing.
I Will Show You How It Was is Illia Ponomarenko's heart-wrenching memoir of the war on his homeland, offering a fiery diatribe against Russian hypocrisy and a moving look at what is being lost. But it's also a story of pride and even elation as Ukrainian forces come together, find their mojo, and oust the invaders from Kyiv. The most powerful and personal chronicle of the war to date, I Will Show You How It Was is an exceptional literary achievement, chronicling a stunning feat of resistance and a courageous people set on a miraculous victory.

The more I watch and learn about Ukraine and its people, the more I am impressed with their resilience, belief and desire to be a truly democratic country. Purely from a moral stance, never mind them being a buffer for the rest of Europe, we must continue to support them in all aspects of their development let alone their war effort. I will purchase the book and look forward to the one you write at the end of this inhumane insane war. Ukraine will be victorious in whatever Ukraine decides as being a victory. Keep up the great work and the message and knowledge is spreading globally. Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦

They're not even close to perfect but they are working on it. There isn't any people in the world who could have fought the russians the same as ukrainians. They had more than a decade to prepare, both ideologically and militarily but mostly ideologically. YES their ideology is far-right (Ultra far-right) but that ideology made the resilience possible. As the 'far-right' population and fighting men will disappear so will Ukraine. If that ideology will disappear, Ukraine will collapse. Laugh all you want but the single thing keeping Ukraine together is that ideology.

@@civreiwey that is utter rubbish and nonsense b.s. Ukrainians who make up the bulk of the military are a combo of many types of ppl, but very few far-right individuals. The culture in Ukr is quite surprisingly liberal-democratic, with far-right ideologues very unpopular now that a far-right country regime has attacked the entire nation of Ukr in the most severely barbaric series of acts since WW2. Your personal political orientation does not change the facts of which Ukrainians are the actual patriots now, and which Ukrainian men don't volunteer in the military, or shirk duty by going or remaining out of the country. Most of the Ukr shirkers that i'm aware of hold conservative political views and dn't want to participate in this war they perceive as being led by liberal democrats even though the sum total of actual leadership & decision makers isn't really so 'liberal'. Ultra conservatism has become a rising scourge and risk to world security and as far as most of us centrists are concerned, it's reactionary & violent tactics show that is has no place in western society at all. You are trying to re-fight a war of 100 years ago and your views are incompatible with modernity and successful economics. I also can sense your age is under late '30's.

@@civreiwey it's absolutely ridiculous to claim that far-right fighters make up more than a tiny fraction of the fighting forces, both mil and civil-mil (militias). Most of the Ukrainian men of fighting age who remain out of country & dn't want to fight for what they see as a relatively very liberal-democrat led country, are men of quite conservative orientation. The entire zeitgeist of Ukr is anti-rightist bcuz the sadistic russians are plainly ultra-rightist fascistic in every way imaginable.

I can't understand how ANY American, or Canadian, or Australian, or New Zealander cannot understand that "just because someone speaks Russian does NOT equate to them wanting to BE Russian. The Russian language ≠ Russian culture. They are not the same thing. Just as Americans, Canadians, Australian, and New Zealanders do NOT want to be British/UK citizens, just because they use the English language. This is not a complex concept.

I agree with you regarding language not being equal to nationality, however it's more than a common language that prevents Oz from occupying NZ. for example, or the USA from attacking, occupying Canada. We "westerns" do not understand what it means to live next door to Russia. We haven't been paying attention to Putin and his henchmen for too long. Cheers from Canada.

@@nancyblair5922 Theoretically, we share a border with Russia. They want right into our space up north (I'm Canadian too) and are already deploying military assets into the Arctic ocean and infringing on territory we have claim too. Too many Canadians (not saying you) forget that. And if the US and Russia ever get in the ring, it'll be our country covered in radioactive debris by American missiles shooting down incoming ICBM's. The point about language was mainly because that is something I see incorrectly referenced all the time by Russian Botniks.

Do not forget also that, for example, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Kazakhs know Russian, not because they are Russian, but because forced Russification was carried out on these lands. how was it carried out? yes very simple. schools were only in Russian. There were no schools in the local language at all. the child was forced to learn a foreign language in order to get an education or move up the social ladder. forced Russification began in the late 19th century in the Russian Empire. Then the revolution, a short period of independence, and the Russian Empire again began to seize these lands in the form of the Stalinist USSR. And if in the Russian Empire Russification was still relatively mild, in villages in rural areas everyone spoke Ukrainian, except in cities. During Stalin's rule, native speakers were simply destroyed. It was especially hard on cultural figures, actors, poets, writers, who continued to write in Ukrainian and Belarusian. and even in such conditions, Ukrainians were able to preserve their language and culture. After so many years of genocide, does anyone else in the West dare to call these russian lands?

The US Congress just passed the law of a $60 Bn aid package to Ukraine that has a provision of providing ATACMS to Ukraine, but it Did Not say or specify where and which targets those long-range missiles can fire at. So, President Zelensky can give orders to his Generals to fire anywhere he deems necessary to defend his country including military targets deep inside Russia such as weapon depots, airfields, weapons manufactory, energy production facilities, air defense infrastructures, command control centers, troops concentration, etc. In other words, the Ukrainian Armed Forces can use ATACMS for any purpose to defend their country as they deem necessary. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin inferred in his press conference, no restrictions on the use of ATACMS since the law provides no 'Restrictions" on the use of those missiles.
