In an NHS lab we're mostly all microbiologists (biomedical scientists) , but a medical doctor will use the information provided by scientists in a clinical way that translates to patient care. A clinical scientist is involved in the clinical interpretation of results.

You can also work in medical microbiology by training as a clinical scientist - you don't need to do a medical degree to follow this career route. Hello, thanks for your message. If you would like to be a medical microbiologist in the UK you need to do a medical degree and two years of foundation training first. If you would like to do research on medical microbiology you could do a Masters and/or a PhD. Hi Arti In the UK you need to do a medical undergraduate degree before you train to be a consultant medical microbiologist.
