In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 6 Topic 8 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 6 (1865-1898).
During the Gilded Age, many people immigrated to America and migrated within America. The immigrants largely arrived from Europe (in the east) and Asia (in the west).
The east coast immigrants settled in industrial centers and took up industrial work for low wages while living in squalid tenements where diseases ran rampant. The west coast immigrants, the bulk of whom came from China, took up work on railroads.
When immigrants settled in these places, they found each other and created ethnic enclaves around their own cultural traditions.
The big migration movement during this period was the Exoduster Movement in which a big portion of the southern black population moved to the midwest to find work and establish homesteads.

- Difference between Immigration and Migration - Immigration is the movement of people between two countries - Migration is the movement of people within a country - BOTH occurred during this time period - Immigration - 16 million immigrants - Came from British Isles, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe - Moved to escape poverty, to find jobs - Some, like the Jews left to flee religious persecution - All settled in industrial centers like NYC and Chicago - Occurred mainly in the east - On the west coast, people mostly came to China, and this immigration started in the 1840s during the gold rush - Cities began to change - Wealthy moved away from cities and into suburbs - Left cities with poor and working class - Cities degraded - Workers crowded into hastily built tenements - Living in close proximity meant the spread of disease - Immigrants from same cultures found each other and created ethnic enclaves to bring some of their own cultures to life - Some immigrants opened grocery stores that sold food that reminisced of their homeland - Migration - Exodusters - Mass migration of blacks to the west - Several organizations were created to assist them - Colored relief board - Kansas Freedman's Aid Society
