This is so encouraging to watch. I have a little 5 year old OTTB that I purchased in December. She’s very similar to your Mowgley - has a hard time turning, the sewing machine trot, a bit of an attitude when being asked to work, dislikes her mouth being touched … but she is an absolute sweetheart, otherwise. She’s gorgeous, tries to please, and kind on the ground. I’ve had a couple of “experienced” horse folk who are typical naysayers - they tell me she will never be a dressage horse, her trot is too choppy, she’s not a good worker, just make her a brood mare or retire her already. But, she’s just started her training and I feel like she has so much potential to learn and grow. I’m not in a hurry and find it discouraging that people don’t have the patience to work with a young thoroughbred who is learning a whole new way of moving. I love watching Mowgley’s progress, and seeing how much you love him and are patient with his journey. It gives me hope that my girl will get there one day. ❤️

i learn so many things not only in this video but also in other ones like wen you dont always need to move your hands just to keep them stable to keep your horse stable and in contact with you and balenced but in this video i learned that we need to ride with the shoulders in to let them be straiter . i love haw you listen to haw the horses fell and want them to be happy ❤

I just recently participated in my first trail ride in over 10 years and I was so nervous. You are absolutely right that we have to stay in our comfort level. I walked my horse at the beginning because I knew I would be a nervous wreck and not pick if I rode. Once I was able to calm down and see that my guy was unfazed, I jumped on and had the best experience ever. I am so thankful to my group for allowing me to push my boundaries in my own way without pushing me to just ride it out. Having a buddy horse you can use as a physical barrier is also great.

What I am learning is all the little adjustments... The multitude of aids and attention to their going. And it is good to see just good riding without gimmicks and slow, steady progress with this horse.

Honestly the fact that he’s only four makes this even more amazing! It is so normal that horses that age still struggle with their body and balance and it is astonishing to see how you are able to support him in the best way possible!! Seeing Mowgley progress so well gives me hope for the OTTB mare I’m riding now. We’re still working on rhythm- for me! She’s so tall and long legged I really have to change my posting rhythm. She’s very sweet but so curious and amazed by all the sounds in the arena, she has trouble concentrating. So my trainer is saying UP/DOWN/UP/DOWN and I’m counting 1,2,3,4 as I post, trying to learn her rhythm. It felt so weird! We also like to do the “end on a good note”. It’s great to hear reinforcement that I’m doing things right, and that tiny bits of progress are worth lots of praise.

A little bit neurotic and doesn't want to work sums me up as well Mowgley. I love watching your videos with him. Sure he's never going to Grand Prix but for most of us with our "normal" horses and all their faults, he is very inspiring. I love thoroughbreds and all their crazy, you can totally tell he loves and trusts you guys. He's come so far for just a baby. I have a bad habit of if a horse finally does something hard of getting excited and wanting to do it again and again to make sure they've "got it" and I've learned that is not something I should be doing. I've learned when you end is important to training too.

I didn't know that young horses stuggle with their balance sometimes! Letting him go where he feels comfortable is a great advice and it means that you respect the horse. And this results to a steadier contact, which is important in all equine sports. I love how you got control with one step at a time, because there are a lot of people, who just want to do things quickly... Thanks for the information!

I always had trouble with my boy falling in on circles and going long side. He wasn't amused at first, but when he understood and listened to my asking for a little leg yeld and or travers he thought he was so good and became so soft and round and I could feel the energy coming up and through from behind in a positive way. 😂

Lovely to be able to go back & reflect on the important training strategies that lead to a breakthrough! I really love that Alicia is so encouraging with Mowgley, considerate of wanting to avoid excessive pressure, sets a goal, yet helps him to find his way. Instead of bull-dozing through his limitations & creating a huge amount of stress! I can see how the approach to training has progressed from the earlier YRS videos with the young horses years & years ago, which were alot more dogmatic in the training!! Very interesting!! I like the idea of keeping your horse within his comfort zone in the initial warm-up and then using the shapes and movements to gradually improve his freedom of movement as the session goes. I myself like to touch my shins once before I try to touch my toes. :)

I love how you set him up for success not only in your current ride but for the next one too. I have a greenie OTTB and sometimes it can be tempting to ask for just one more transition or one more exercise. This is a great reminder to end on a good note even if it’s a shorter session rather than pushing it. It certainly helped show how the small steps approach works to achieve great results. Always a plus to set it up to have a more willing partner for the next ride. Thank you for all you do!! ☺️

It's crazy how this horse could be my mare's brother, they look and act so much alike. However, mine came from racing first, then to polo, and is now going to learn dressage. But these videos with Mowgs have helped so much. My mare is also stiff to one side, so plan to apply the travers like here! Thank you SO much for all the amazing lessons.

Purchasing a just 4year old OTTB tomorrow providing vetting goes well. Love your attitude of rewarding them after small success and building upon that. So key to any young horse but I think OTTB’s in particular. Thank you!

My Thoroughbred is not quite 4 years old too, and has some of the same tendencies under saddle as Mowgley so this was very helpful to see how you work through the hiccups with him! This also helped me learn how the travers into a circle can really help supple and strengthen the horse when they have a weaker/leaning side. Thanks so much for your dedication in showing us these helpful things! 🤗

I loved seeing mowgly here! He's truly blossoming isn't he?!! My biggest take away from this gem here was the idea of letting them give you just that little try before taking the win. That it's good to ask for small wins like that. I really am going to try to keep this in mind when I ride different horses. I loved that little bit of canter you did at the end. It was very pleasant I think for him and you and I want that with a horse of my own one day. 💕 🐴 ⭐ 🤯

Personal safety is very important, going out on a hack/ around the XC with a calm horse and a rider who understands and respects your needs. I have found my horse is great when out with my husband on his bike for extra security when out :)

Biggest take away is to do like a leg yield in the circle in order to get a bigger step. Way better than doing it on a straight. Love it!

Very interesting, can't wait to try that out on my horse as she also is like a choppy sewing machine with her quarters sticking out on one rein! Suppling exercises for warm up, leg yields on a circle and travers got it thank you 🤗 Great tips on taking your horse out to new places too, going with a calmer horse that allows you to go up its bum so to speak haha or someone to walk with you, great ideas! :) Mowgley is looking fantastic, can't believe the changes in such a short space of time so inspiring and just goes to show it's easy when you know how 😍🤗 thank you so much for sharing all your tips Alicia, you really are a super star in my eyes 🤩

my takeaway is when gymnastizing my horse I use the circle tracks to ask for leg yield to increase contact and a freer horse with increased suppleness...also love that you were not proud to have a leader with Mowgoly when you were starting him just to give him confidence and trust

Hi, Alecia. Great video. It helps me to appreciate the little things with my OTTB's. I also appreciate you mentioning the bond with these horses. So many others forget. I was recently told by the last Clinician and clinic I hosted & rode both my OTTB's was that I was digging myself out of a hole with my OTTB's for Dressage.

100% love this! They dont need to work for 1 hour, short rides that work within the horses abilities are perfect. I have a new OTT and I haven’t even started riding him yet as there are a few things to get sorted first with teeth, feet and feed. But we have started some round yard work like you did with Mowgs in the beginning. He has gone from stressed and unsure to the most willing sweet boy in 2 weeks he has been with me.

I love the way you praise mowgs, I do the same with my Thoroughbred Jimmy ! I talk to him all the time actually, but I do love the suppling exercise and use it in my warm ups so Thankyou ! 🙏🙏🙏

I like that concept of lateral work to improve straightness---it is so tempting to just drive them forward but that lateral movement seems to really stabilize the straight movement in a way that just pushing forward won't. Cool thing to learn! I'm going to try it with my young one :)

I have become interested in adopting an ottb eventually but they are definitely a project and I’m no horse trainer. The Mowgley videos have been very informative. I love how you cheer every small win. It’s a very important thing to remember to do for oneself too as a learner .

Great tip on using Travers on the circle to help the horse free up when he goes forward. I'll try this with my horse today. Mowgley is good to watch as he is expressive with his discomfort when an exercise is hard and then settles into it when his way if going improves. Also love how you use a token canter at the end as the try one more time for me and reward him with finishing 💖

Mogs looks so great! I cannot believe he's just 4- what a good boy. This is amazing progress for a 4 yo TB! You have done so well with him- no surprise though. He's even getting a little neck and bum on him and his eye is very sweet :-) Wonderful advise for the new trail ride. I have not quite done that with my new guy... He's very "looky". We've just started going in the outdoor arena to lunge & riding around the outside of the barn after arena work.

He is looking so good. That is a great exercise to do the increase of pace on the circle with a little counter bend, to get a more rhythmical bigger trot.

Greatest nugget herein: using the specific dressage moves, to facilitate the horse achieving better balance, rhythm, connection, & overall better fluidity. Demonstrating how the initial difficulties manifest differently as the horse progresses & how to address them & work through it, in the step by step guide, is incredibly helpful! Very relevant to me & my horse at our current level! Love to see this ❤ Re the DMA snippet - excellent advice: be sensible, think about the surfaces - so beneficial! Thank you for reinforcing the idea of rewarding all the small things in the beginning to build trust and confidence. And as they progress, ask them for that extra little bit before the reward. It’s a great way to keep them moving ahead rather than getting stuck in their training.

He’s going great! Travers on a circle to help is something I’m going to try tomorrow. I’ve been struggling with my horse slowing his tempo for lateral movements as well. Also, just want to thank you for last video tip about eating all your chocolate in one sitting instead of over a few days. Next peanut butter m&ms pack will be eaten all at once. 😜😂

I learnt that when a horse is being "difficult" they're actually having a hard time, and maybe the exercise is at the edge of their ability (or maybe even outside of their ability).

I also struggle with the tempo in travers. I would never come up with an idea to make a circle because I thought that it will slow down the horse more. I've always used more legs on to go forward. I can't wait to try your tips!!! Big kisses to all of you MUAH MUAH MUAH 😘😘😘😄
