I think Ollie is really good. It's understandable he was a ghost hunter, he was brainwashed to think ghost are bad his whole life and he clearly regrets it.

While Ollie is far from my favorite character, his relationship with Molly is genuinely adorable. They have a lot of chemistry, they bounce off each other perfectly, and Ollie's arc, going from a ghost hating ghost hunter, to realizing they aren't as bad as he previously thought is really well executed. Plus, as much as I love both Libby and Andrea as characters, I never felt like shipping them with Molly was anything more than just fan speculation. They never really had anything that would hint at a romantic connection, and making them a couple would feel forced. Like, Anne I could totally believe starting a relationship with either Sasha or Marcy. But the relationship that Molly has with both Libby and Andrea feel way too platonic to develop into something more. I'm all for LGBTQ ships, but do it in a way where it feels natural, not just to make it happen.

I do really like Ollie and his relationship with Molly. I think the only reason fans hate him is because of the shipping culture and the fact that there are still some people out there who want Molly McGee to be another Owl House. Also, I really hope Molly and Ollie get back together. I love them as a couple.

I’m honestly so glad someone finally made a video like this. It feels like people didn’t even give Ollie a chance due to him squashing other ships people had for Molly. But he’s a really well written character that adds a great dynamic to the rest of the cast and he and Molly are a really great duo!

Also hearing Alan say he ships Molly and Libby made me laugh too. And the fact he play the love interest of Molly is the cherry on top. 😁

I don’t care if its Molly is straight, lesbian or bisexual. I want to see what make her happy with and not being force into a ship. A real fan should know let who the main character should be with by their choice not labeling them who they want them to be whatever is straight or being a lesbian or both.

I'm all for male Molly. I like Molly already, more Molly is more fun. Also, fellow shippers, think about this for a sec, some of you ship Molly with Libby (guilty) and some of you ship her with Andrea. And despite polycule being a totally valid option, some of you prefer to keep your ships monogamous, which is also fine so long you're not a jerk about it (again, shipping is not something that should be taken seriously in the first place, but here we are). Now, with the introduction of Ollie, we now have TWO distinct Molly's to ship. WE CAN HAVE BOTH NOW! And if not, there's always Canadian cousin Milly.

I really like the end of this vid, as it suddenly made a lot of things click. It's actually pretty genius to introduce a new character who starts off as nearly identical to the main character before then developing them and giving them their own conflicts and - more importantly - differences. It's just that a lot of people only saw the surface level of this and went "oh boo, now the show is shipping Molly with a boy version of herself". I do hope we see a few more personality differences/differences in interests between Molly and Ollie down the road, but even if we don't, the show has still done a pretty good job making Ollie feel like his own character - especially in these last couple episodes. Really can't wait to see more with him - and yeah I agree, I'm glad they're putting the romance stuff aside for now to focus on Ollie's development and his friendship with Molly and, likely, Scratch.

I'm gonna be honest: At first, I was kind of skeptical when I first was introduced to Ollie Chen. However, as the show continues, my like for Ollie grew more and more. And rewatching it with my friends with a bit more understanding, why he was hesitant at times when he learned the truth and such...it makes me like Ollie more and more.

I agree with everything said here, Ollie's always been a favorite for me ever since s2 started and I was almost immediately interested in him when he was introduced, and I'm glad you explained why he's such a good character to the series, also may I just say that what you explained about Ollie's development in <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="761">12:41</a> was something I didn't actually think about until now, I always saw them as completely different characters despite their similarities, but I never realized how clever the writing was when it came to how Molly viewed Ollie and her relationship with Scratch, though I also want to add that after the events of "I Wanna Dance with Some-Ollie" we actually start to see his character flaws, because after Molly cuts her possible relationship with Ollie, it moves on from her seeing him as "perfect" and "flawless" to extreamly flawed, and this can also be said about the rest of the Chens since we also got to see how imperfect they actually are after that episode in "Frightmares on Main Street"

I'm so thankful you made this! I've seen so many people treat him as if he's tortured innocent souls and somehow not considering that he is THIRTEEN. Him & the Chens in general are my favorite new additions in season 2 and it sucks to see so many people misunderstand them.

I first, I didn’t like Ollie because for me, he was just a boy version of Molly because of how much they have in common. But since episode 12 and 13, I started to like his character because of his redemption arc. They have cute moments especially in the middle school dance episode. I hope we will see more of Ollie’s character

Back when Season 2 first leaked and everyone was having a panic attack over Molly liking a boy, I think it was because thanks to The Owl House and Lumity, everyone basically expected Molly to be an LGBT+ character since we were all desperate to make the first cartoon we see into the next Owl House even though every show should stand on its own. I also recently compared this situation to everyone in the My Little Pony fandom freaking out over Twilight Sparkle being interested in Flash Sentry in Equestria Girls, which I dubbed "male love interest jumpscare." In fact, practically every time I saw Ollie prior to Season 2, the only thing on my mind was "male love interest jumpscare."

Dude the amount of hate I’ve seen for this guy is insane. All because people aren’t having their adorable uwu Molly X Andrea become canon which honestly would have probably been pretty toxic from what’s been seen so far. Sure she’s gotten better but Andrea still seems like she likes to be the center of attention and push Molly to the side. That doesn’t sound too healthy to me. With Ollie there’s a mutual connection and yes Ollie and Molly do have their differences but it’s clear that Ollie is just beginning to work on it after seeing a whole new perspective after being shown only 1 perspective for a majority of his life. Y’all are free to ship who you want and who knows what could happen at this point but don’t hate on what’s already happening just because it isn’t going your way. You can’t always get what you want. I appreciate you making this video. Ollie gets too much unneeded flack. I like how the recent episodes after Frightmares on Main Street show that he is still reeling from the idea of ghosts being like people. When you spend a good chunk of your life believing in something and finding out that said belief is built on lies and/or misconceptions, you are left uncertain on things. The recent episode, Unhaunting of Brighton Video, showed that Ollie is still reeling from it. I am interested in seeing where Ollie will go from here now in terms of development. Plus, his interactions with Molly are wonderful. Whether you ship them or not, you have to admit that their chemistry is adorable.

As an Oliver/Ollie who struggles a lot with the guilt of past actions that were largely informed by misunderstandings, I think I gotta give this show a watch now

What makes me mad about Ollie hate is that they don’t hate him for his character, they hate him for his relationship with Molly. Just cuz molly isn’t dating Libby or Andrea doesn’t mean she isn’t LGBT and doesn’t mean she needs to be dating them. It feels pretty blatant that Ollie’s family is a Disney friendly allegory for bigotry and how it grows stronger from a family environment. It is an incredibly relevant discussion for an American cartoon to have as the country is facing heavy propaganda against trans and non heteronormative identities. It was really uncomfortable for me to watch the school prom episode because when taking into the thematic context of bigotry, Mollie was really doing Scratch dirty to initially choose someone who wants Scratch and his kind to disappear. Hence why this narrative is using ghosts as a substitute, cause otherwise using an actual racial/ethnic/sexual/gender minority would make Ollie (and also arguably Mollie) completely unlikeable and irredeemable to many (and just imagine that with how many already dislike Ollie). The ghosts cover also makes it less likely to be targeted by “anti-woke” parents who think any form of progressive ideas is child indoctrination. Like think about it, this show is encouraging kids to think outside of what hateful beliefs that may have been conditioned by their families and to consider outside perspectives. That’s the kind of thing anti-“woke” parents hate. It really brings into perspective how ambitious they’re being with this plotline with Ollie and his family. And speaking of Ollie, he isn’t like the most in depth personality but he serves as an easy to digest character as someone who was raised into prejudiced ideas but also having the empathy to see the other side of things. It’s moreso what he and his family represent in the greater thematic scope that interest me. So yeah I don’t really care about the romance hints in the slightest, but I am cautiously optimistic that they’ll handle the greater themes with Ollie and his family well. I’m not expecting high levels of nuance mind you, but it’s still a meaningful problem to tackle in a kid’s show. And it in turn makes me appreciate Ollie and his existence in the story.

Characters aren’t irredeemable monsters for ruining ships. As a total drama fan I saw the exact same problem with Emma from RR though to a lesser extent. And I appreciate that they try to make Ollie more than Molly’s love interest.

Honestly most are too harsh on Ollie, who’s the result of being raised in a metaphorical chamber. I’m saying this as someone who’s born in east Asia. Ollie and June’s situation occurs often in East Asian, such as Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese, families. This is because they adhere to the values of collectivism. In this case of the Chens, they might have been second or third gen immigrants. However, their ethnic family values are passed down subconsciously, in this case Rubén’s hyperfixations and bigotry. Both Ollie and June can actually feel the pressure to follow their father and mother, especially with older children/siblings like Ollie. That’s why he was so shocked to face changes and wanted to correct himself to a fault. My parents are open minded even if they’re Chinese descent, but I can culturally relate to Ollie in the mindset aspect. So I hope ppl can be more lenient on teens like Ollie if they bother empathising with people from different cultures.

Which is why character development is ULTRA IMPORTANT! Ollie is a great candidate for his own growth. It may take time, but he needs that time for it to grow and expand.

You brought up some great points, especially with how Molly and Ollie's relationship is a parrelel from Molly and Scratch relationship back in Season 1. I never thought about it like that before. But personally, the stuff with Molly and his ghost hunter views are a great part of his character, but outside of that, I still stand that he's just not interesting outside if thise things when Season 2 started. That being said, I will admit, I Wanna Dance With Some-Ollie, Frightmare on Main Street and Unhaunting of Brighton Video is winning me over on his character. But even then, I never hated the character like so many people did. I still gave him a chance just like I did with Andrea back in Season 1. But no cause apparently being a ghost hunter, and the love interest makes him the "WORST" character on the show.....which is BS. I'm still pissed about the Ollie-less poster on reddit. -_- Seriously like you said, the creators are ok with whoever character you ship. (as long as its appropriate) I'll be honest, I ship Molly and Libby also and I'll still ship them regardless of what happens in Season 2. But even then I still want to see what Bill and Bob do with Molly and Ollie's relationship cause despite my issues with Ollie, I'm still curious to see where this goes. I have no problem with Ollie, his character development is great, the only problem I have is I wish Andrea learned about Scratch before him and be part of the Ghostfriends. That has to happen eventually, she can never truly be Molly's close friend until she knows about that part of her life.

I actually really liked Ollie as Molly's pair. Sure I do so love cheesy romance plots, but even with that aside, I think it's a nice idea to give her someone who can act on her wavelength. The other characters act like Molly is just 'Molly' with no other reason given to her actions, but my man Ollie could actually understand her reason and thoughts. I was never one for shipping Molly and Libby. I feel people can be friends and never have a chance for it to go past that. Sure it's cute if it happens naturally, but it shouldn't be expected. tldr: I like Ollie. He's a nice guy and I hope he and Molly continue to get along.

Ollie's a good guy, he's genuinely nice and is a good match for molly. It's just that he was misguided by his parents and their ghost hunting beliefs. I don't like how everyone gives him unfair treatment just because he only recently learned not all ghosts are bad. At least he's willing to learn. Also, I love Jeff but I think it's a bit messed up for a grown guy to threaten a small teen who did a mistake, both in the haunting house episode and in the ghost friends parody. Hopefully as the show continues we'll see more character development.

One thing I just considered about Ollie's family. If the story of Reuben being scared by that one ghost is true, there's a very important factor to consider. That scaring likely would have happened when the Chairman was in power. That would mean ghosts would have had to fill a scare report that says a ghost has scared a certain number of people. If they do not meet this count, they are sent to the Flow of Failed Phantoms. Thanks to the events of the Season 1 finale, that is no longer a factor. I hope that somebody brings this up in the show, whether that be Molly, Scratch, or maybe even a member of the Ghost Council.

Thank you for taking time to make this video, as an Ollie fan i'm very glad to see this kind of character analysis, you made a fantastic point that i did not even considered, i always was kind of annoyed that scratch had to go to the dance just to mess with the couple, but you are right, that actually forced them to be honest with each other in the long term and for that created an healthier relationship even if they had to cross rocky paths to reach that point. That being said i think Molly gave up way too early in changing Ollie's mind (supposedly "McGees never give up" remember?) but since we had seen Molly defeated before (Like in the davenport's Christmas episode) i'll gave that a pass. Again, thank you for making this video, it still irks me that the creators made such a goofy, lighthearted and kind character and what it gets is a lot of hate just for shipping reasons.

I really don't get why Ollie was hated before his premire episode, like I understand being upset that Mollibby not being canon, which is fine and you do deserve to feel that way, but the fact that Ollie was hated MONTHS before his release is insane to me. Like I saw a compilation video of them bashing Ollie to no ends, saw a club hating on him, saw him getting hit on the head with a brick (I don't care if it was made for comedy, but still WTF?) and more. Like as a person whose favourite character is Ollie, I understand people not liking him, but for hating him because your Yuri ship won't be canon is just so plain idiotic. Not to mention I saw him being called evil, a stalker, a b word that heavily dislikes Ghosts, a person that would betray Molly at the end and more.

I think they could’ve cut him a little more slack and give his ghost hunter side more merit. Cuz he really never successfully haunted, captured or even seen a ghost before. Also many of the ghost in the shows do haunt and scare people maliciously. Even if there is a reason for it they don’t try to communicate it unless Molly presses them on it (most times). And also ghosts aren’t just like humans they have straight up powers and if a bad one showed up who couldn’t be reasoned with then the Chengs are a pretty good team to have. I like Ollie and hopefully they present him more positively from now on.

He sure needs it lol BTW Shoutout to the inclusion of clips from the show, really fun stuff really helps with the pacing My thing with Ollie is, he STILL doesn't feel like a different CHARACTER than Molly, he just has one primary different experience that causes him to act differently. Like, if Molly's family was Ghost Hunters and she saw the error of her ways I can't name a single thing that she would do definitively different from what Ollie does. Probably the main thing is that Ollie never has that "So positive that it's scary" part of Molly but in terms of character traits rather than experiences he doesn't really seem to have a substitute for that and that's one of the things I like most about Molly so it's an especially unfun thing to get rid of and feels lacking in purpose. Not that Ollie doesn't still have room to get his own character traits outside of ex-ghost hunter, but as it stands I can only really appreciate his inclusion because of the great writing of themes of prejudice and guilt, and that feels like more of praise of the writing and scenario than of the actual character. Overall the two lack interesting chemistry because they're so similar that it's just not believable, it's like Ollie was manufactured for Molly with one glitch instead of being his own character who organically fell in love with her and vice versa. Imagine if Jeff was just Geoff but... his name was Jeff with a J and uhhhh he used to not be particular about spelling but now he is because Geoff taught him that people can get names like that mixed up :). Which honestly is probably just a thing in the show considering J clarifies his name starts with a J despite it being the more common spelling anyway. But like, it'd be weird and less fulfilling for that to be all, right? Not just me? Hopefully this paragraph+ doesn't UNDERexplain it. Overall a good vid, it brings up the good and very underrated parts of Ollie, argues against people who hate him just because straight, and is well edited. I'm really interested in where they'll take Ollie going on but definitely more interested in the themes of prejudice going on in the show that Ollie happens to vehicle.

I don’t know why but I can just imagine Ollie saying the song “Nothing Left To Lost” from The Tangled Series to his dad. Basically all of the Chen’s (minus Ruben) decided to stop ghost hunting. For clarification Oliver and Molly managed to convince all but one member of the family. Now this is where the song comes in play.

I'll admit it, I was not an Ollie fan; frankly I'm still not, but I like where the show's going with his character arc. The root of my dislike, and possibly the root for a lot of people, is because a good amount of shows I grew up with that had a female lead had the "token boy-crush" character. This character was a piece of stale bread who's traits were good looking and basic kindness; in short, he was the "Ken". Some of the best examples of this are in shows like The Winx Club, Ever After High, Monster High. Ollie for the most part is still in the "token boy-crush" zone, but he's improving.

i didnt know that Ollie needed a defense video made for him but here we are... thanks for saying this. people get too worked up about their head canon and ships when something happens in the show that goes against it. this is why i hate shipping culture. it gets too serious and infighting breaks out amongst the fans and it just ruins the show for everyone. i mean just look at Star vs. the Forces of Evil, a show i loved (with all its flaws) only to find out after i finished it that the fandom had basically been broken. i really hope that doesnt happen with this show, or any other show. also fuck anyone who leaks spoilers. even if it’s not a spoiler for anything, you shouldnt leak it before it’s intended to be seen. thats not right. THANK YOU for making this video. It's sad that a person with nearly 5,000 more subs points out way more stuff than a person with nearly 500,000 subs. I 100% agreed with everything you said. If you like another ship, that's fine. Just don't lose your shit over someone that prefers another ship. Libby and Molly work better as friends since they've had a strong connection ever since they met. Now as a fan of Andrea myself, we're not gonna ignore the fact that she wasn't just automatically good. She was just your typical mean rich girl until she changed at the end of season 1. Shipping Molly with Andrea is fine. However, comparing it to Lumity is not. Amity and Andrea are completely different characters. Amity was a jerk when we first saw her because of her parents. Andrea was a jerk because she's rich. So that comparison is BS. Back to this video, though. People wanna be complete idiots and talk down on a new character just because the main character has a crush on that new character instead of what they wanted in the first place. The CREATORS have the final say on who Molly should be with, not the fans. With that being said, I'm rooting for Ollie to develop more because he's one of my favorite characters that deserves better and a chance no matter what people say. Everyone fell in love with Sasha, Jasper, Amity, etc. from developing to better. Why can't Ollie Chen get the same treatment?

I enjoy Ollie as a character, especially the journey he has gone on over the course of this season, but I do think he’s a weak romantic interest as being… well, not JUST “Boy Molly”, but being introduced very much feeling like “artificial Perfect Crush Match”. However, like I said, as a character to add in to the Molly/Libby/Scratch friend circle, he’s a good character in his own right. I think the best part of his dynamic in The Unhaunting of Brighton Video, and a more recent episode aired after this video was made, Let’s Play Turnipball works to make him a nice middle ground between Molly’s optimism and desire to help everyone and Libby’s anxiousness and self doubts. I do hope he gets more screentime to further flesh his dynamics with Molly, Libby, and Scratch out, but what’s there now is a good arc of learning to accept others instead of blindly believing other peoples’ prejudice. And hey, if they can flesh out the Molly/Ollie dynamic and give us a bit more of what Ollie’s like on his own, I’m not opposed to them as a couple. But I’d also be happy if the show ultimately had them be content as friends and didn’t have Molly end up with anyone, the same way Amphibia never established a romantic interest for Anne, Sasha, or Marcy.

In terms of shipping, i just wanna say, i just heard someone on Tumblr use the word "Mollycule" and they're so right

As incredibly basic Ollie’s character is, I honestly still like the character. He ranks somewhere around A or High B-Tier.

I honestly don’t care about their relationship, it is fine. I just spend most of the Cheng’s episodes wondering if they didn’t knew they are going to die eventually and become ghosts, literally what they swore to destroy. Everything eventually dies, except stupidity I guess.

Well, I like Ollie, and I think if the show decides Molly should get with anyone, be it Ollie, Libby or Andrea, I will be completely cool with it. I mean, Molly ending up with any one of them by series’ end has gotta go down better than the utter shipwreck of romantic disasters that is Star vs the Forces of Evil.

Can’t a best friend be a best friend without being force to be a couple? There was Danny and Sam, Star and Marco, Jenny and Brad, Ko and Dendy, Steven and Connie, Jumba and Pleakley, Timon and Pumbaa, heck even Dipper and Mabel and they are brother and sister Gross!!!!!!!! I like Molly and Libby better as best friends. I find being best friends is Way better than couples. Like Star vs Forces of Evil at first I like Star and Marco together but then it became a romance subtext plot over season to season and I change my mind about them being a couple and like them better as best friends.

I dont think that the show will coming back to make mollie cannon but i wouldnt mind that (even through im a molliby fan) On another thing: i liked how the unhunting of brighton video give us a forshadow to scartch getting corrapted in the season final

So I was recently watching Miraculous Ladybug and thought what if Molly Mcgee had the Ladybug Miraculous while Ollie has the Black Cat Miraculous. I don’t why but it sounds cool.

I think ollie will have to show his sister that ghost are not evil later on in season 2

Besides Libby’s more confident side and Andrea’s reassurance, Ollie’s character development is one of my favorite parts about the show like he tends to believe that all ghosts are bad, but turns out he was wrong. Maybe all ghosts aren’t so bad and after knowing the truth about Scratch. Ollie is not yet one my favorites but he’s getting there. Apart from the whole “all ghosts are bad” thing, he’s not such a bad guy.

I like Ollie but I wish his family had a better motivation for hating ghosts

I actually like this ship, and his arc is fantastically executed. ❤❤❤I just wish her and Molly looked a bit different. Their resemblance is kinda uncanny 😂😂

Wow i suppose it's good i only recently got into the ghost and molly mcgee, because all the fandom drama i missed, so i could enjoy season 2 for what it was. No shipping discourse souring my watching experience here!

With what I have been seeing recently, yes, I can totally agree that Oliver has been getting too much hate. When I first saw this character, I did not want to jump to conclusions too quickly and instead think about how Oliver can be a new addition to this series. He may not be a top tier character for me, but since the ending of "I Wanna Dance With Some Ollie," I actually sensed a possible "good in him." Until "Frightmares On Main Street," that's where I started to actually give Oliver a proper chance to develop and see what he can do. I might not agree with the "crushing romance" back in the first few episodes that featured him, but I'm actually glad I stayed along with the TGAMM series. No regrets. If you ask me, I think the hate is coming from the people who jump to conclusions too quickly, specific TGAMM shippers, and the ones who do not "see" what development Oliver really has. Anyways, if you are reading this comment, I've stated my points clearly and appreciate your time reading this one carefully.😉 I don't hate Oliver (nor the man who voiced him, "Alan Lee"), but I am willing to keep going and see what Oliver can do in the future of TGAMM.😊
