In-Depth BMPCC4K Rig Break-Down

Bobby takes us through an in-depth breakdown of how our rig is currently set up with the BMPCC4K at the center, and why we've chosen to do what we've done. Below is a list of the brands and models listed:

I also have the Sigma 18-35 on my bmpcc4k and a Nucleus nano. My second biggest gripe is that i've had many skip issues with the lens and focus motor when the kit isn't locked down. You might be able to observe some bend on your 15mm rod when your motor is activating the focus ring. My actual biggest gripe is that the micro usb connector on my motor is near broken now and very sensitive (it can disconnect if the cable is nudged.) The one time a connector should have a been a secure proprietary thing, Tilta went with a super fragile micro usb. I want to seriously consider prime cine lenses and manual follow focus, but the Sigma is just, so, damned, practical. But its focus throw is too small and I need the Nucleus' precision. When it works...

Haha we share some of the same ailments! Nothing is perfect huh?! Yes, frustrating that they use a micro-usb... easy to replace on the other hand! We've almost gotten rid of our Sigmas in the past, but as you say, they are indeed too damn practical. Happy shooting 🤙🏼

This rig right here, would it be heavy enough for the footage to be somewhat stabilized?

Definitely! We like rigging a body up for this reason. The most weight comes from the V-Mount, so pick and choose according to how much you want to be holding. Also - the BMPCC4K can now use the gyro info in DaVinci to stabilize!

Love your rig! I typically use a shoulder mount, but I've been wanting to make a solid handheld rig too. A couple things I'd recommend that I think could make your handheld rig better would be a Tilta Side Focus handle. Then you'd have a great place to hold with your left hand that syncs with your wireless focus. Next would be a rubber focus ring that slides onto the Sigma 18-35. I bought one online from a company that 3D prints them, and it works so much better and faster than the narrow ones that come with the Nano Nucleus system. Next a quality arca-swiss quick release plate and base to make it even faster to remove from the rig. I've added arca-swiss quick release base plates to all of my rigs and keep the same Kessler Kwik Plate on the BMPCC4K. I initially had a cheaper one, but found that they'd loosen up quickly. The Kessler is more expensive, but well worth it for how securely it remains mounted. Lastly, and this is something I haven't gotten yet myself, is the PortKeys BM5 bluetooth monitor. With the way your have your V-mount battery mounted, I'd bet it'd be a game changer to be able to control the camera from the monitor. I know with my shoulder rig, it'd be a game changer for me. Have you had any issues with flex when using the Nucleus Nano? I’ve tightened everything and it moves a lot when you go back and forth on focus

Hey! Yes, we've had problems there too! Generally, we've found it has more to do with the lens mount point having some give - those motors put out a lot of torque! Sometimes loosening up can actually help reduce the tension on that mount point. Otherwise, finding a way to lock the lens down to the rails can be helpful as a solution!

Nice rig bro. Do you still have your Gh5s and use in conjunction with Bmpcc4k. It's a combo that I plan on using and just wondered if its something you do and how it's worked out. Thanks JF

Hey! Great question. We had both for a while, but aside from the bonus of IBIS... we never reached for our GH5 after having the BMPCC4K. The experience was better on every front. That said - you can totally match them in post! The main thing will of course be the difference in color science. We didn't love the GH5 skin tones, so we generally matched to the BMPCC4K. Sorry to have missed this! All of our hardware comes from SmallRig. We have had a terrific experience over the years so we just keep going back to them for their designs 🤙🏼

Oh boy... we don't have specifics for everything. The handle was small rig, as was the monitor cage and the half cage for the bmpcc4k. Hope that helps!
