Ableton Live is the #1 worship leading software. With it you can run a click track, backing tracks, and automate production elements like lyrics and lighting. In this video, I'll show you an in-depth look at my Ableton Live setup I use every Sunday at Mission Lakewood. You'll see how I setup my tracks in arrangement view, cue my tracks with a midi footcontroller, and I'll also demonstrate how I automate ProPresenter and Lighting software with Ableton Live.

Hey Jake ! This great! Your video has inspired us to have our lyrics automated by Abelton. In this video you mentioned that you do have spontaneous moments. For the most part we stick pretty close to the arrangements have moments of spontaneous worship or we add some more space before the bridge to allow our worship leader to flow. In those moments who controls lyrics on slides? How would you coordinate that with your pro presenter person? Thank you! Looking forward to hearing from you.
@Churchfront
@Churchfront 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Adrian! It depends. Sometimes if I’m just repeating a simple chorus we just have the person monitoring ProPresenter take over and cue up the right slides. But if I wanted to cue up any section of the song it would automatically pull up the right cues. Lots of room for flexibility here.

I saw you mentioned in the comments a 13in MacBook Pro would work, but for each computer would I need 16GB RAM or would 8 work? i5 or i7? I’m sure the bigger the better, but with a budget bigger isn’t always an option lol thanks man, and keep these videos coming! Great content!!

Just a thought to consider you can do a lot in Session view. I create in Arrangement, but run in session. Like Will Doggett says its not an either or it can be both. It all depends on your approach and needs.The only thing I don't do that you do is crossfades of pads, I have 2 keys players so I have it covered. No need. But I might swap if I did not have live keys players. Its all about your needs. And I do ton of automation. One thing you may want to consider is consolidating you automation to lock it in. This way its the same every time. It also allows me drag that clip into session. I tell people take a look at your needs and let that guide which view is right to run live with, but by all means learn both views to know which one really suits you and your team the best. When get into multiple automation and lots of MIDI Routing I find that session view allows you to see routing details and big picture much more efficiently. Krisitan Ponsford the other big name with Multitracks is more of a Session view. So its really just depends on what works best. I also find the Mixer Style layout of session view is sometimes easier for volunteers to run. Its just more intuitive for them since its familiar.
@Churchfront
@Churchfront 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Rob! Yeah, I need to explore that workflow more. I can see how session view with the automation cues included could allow for some greater flexibiliy to jump around a set. Do you have to export the different sections of a song to break them up in scenes in session view, or do you run a whole song in one scene?
@robsharp2941
@robsharp2941 6 жыл бұрын
Churchfront with Jake Gosselin for me 99% of the stuff I do is A-Z. 10 member band , 4 on the Praise Team and 30 in the choir. The more people you have involved the less jumping around you do you would treat it just like the stems.saving sections over into Session. You then could export those into a file I am the exception that most guys that use Session jump around a lot I don’t. And those guys do a master list. I do not...my Ableton library has around 400 plus songs.

Thanks so much for this info! You said you are sending audio out from Ableton to your DSnake, could you provide some more details there? We are trying to break up the backing tracks into some subgroups for mixing (bass, pads, guitar, etc) and in order to plug into our A&H DSnake box, we have to convert the signal to XLR. If the Ableton mac was in back of house, I could plug usb directly into our QU-32 but no usb cable will reach that far. I'm trying to avoid doing a remote connection to the computer and keep it on stage. Any thoughts?

How do you go about in arrangement view where you have multiple songs arranged in a linear forma how do you utilize marker triggers (i.e. intro, verse, chorus...) for each song without it going back to original song part when say the part is programed 1, 2, 3...on the computer keyboard? In other words if going into song 2 how do you setup marker triggers which are designated for song 2 only and not song 1? Setting up song section markers for multiple songs for repeating sections of the song (i.e. verse, chorus...)? Thanks!

Way to go Jake...great stuff. Question, I lead fro the keyboard/piano, and I am already using the sustain pedal, sound amplifier pedal, and a bluetooth page turner. What is your thought in using a small, 33-44 key midi keyboard to use instead of a Looptimus board?
@Churchfront

I think that could work great. Midi mapping in Ableton is so powerful you can really use whatever piece of hardware you would like. Sounds like a little keyboard would definitely make sense for you.

Adam Mays If you don't already have Ableton, take a look at the MIDI products from Akai. We use one to have push button control for our lighting system (makes turning the sanctuary lights on and off easy for our older members that do the weekly cleaning). They have keyboards or button "drum pads" available, and most of them ship with a $50 coupon off Ableton live.

Another great controller that is super simple is the Novation Launchpad, But I agree the Akai stuff is great as well and have had some of the APC gear designed for use with live. In fact I may be switching to the bluetooth Akai controller myself for some setups. Like touching the button.I don't always trust my feet. what can I say I am old school.

Would be curious to know your organization system. I have song files that has any originals, also and edits folder that has the stems and MIDI clips for that session. Also save that working project in edited in case I need to add tracks or more automations.
@Churchfront
@Churchfront 6 жыл бұрын
I keep it pretty simple. I have a master folder containing all Ableton assets. Then in that folder I have three folders. 1. Templates and resources. 2. Individual song projects. 3. weekend set list projects. In the individual song projects folder, every song gets a folder containing everything for that song. I go in a build the project for the song, saving multiple versions if I need them. and then I create set list projects in which I drag in my individual songs.

Jake, I’m so grateful for all your help! I hit an obstacle... my tempo tracks that I created are not “mastering” the time signature. If I have one song in 4/4 transitioning into another in 3/4, the track will change tempo but remain in 4/4 unless I change it manually at the top. Any help??

In the scrub area above the timeline (your cursor turns into a speaker) right click and you will see an option to create a time signature change at the appropriate measure.

I have been using Ableton for about 6 years in worship leading. I'm a heretic and use session view ha! I found Loop Community's template and tweaked it for my needs at the time. But...to my question...something I've always struggled with. In your context, automating ProPresenter cues and lighting cues is necessary due to a lack of volunteers. I've been there and understand, but I currently have plenty of tech volunteers. However, volunteers can be terribly inconsistent with many things and I'd like to go back to using Ableton to trigger almost every tech cue. Have you had to have that conversation with a techie? "Thanks for helping, but I'm gonna use Ableton to do your job more efficiently." (I know that you'd never say that, but nonetheless, how do you say that?)
