To those of us who aren’t able to launch reliably with our left hand while keeping hold of our right stick, a vertical takeoff is a great advantage even without vertical landing capability, as it eliminates the initial low, slow and risky split second with no hand on the right stick. So that model is a very useful achievement even without vertical landings.

Hi Andrew! I have always been astonished that no one builds these from (pseudo) scratch like this, and I think these are just the COOLEST! The twin "vectored thrust" versions are so much more involved and difficult, and these are really just so easy to make and fly. I built mine out of an old AR WING a couple years ago and it is one of the things I'm most proud of, and generates the most interest by the others at my flying field. *BUT* - I used Ardupilot - and seeing all the difficulty you've gone through here I would love to see you give it a try. I know it's not your favorite, but it's SO MUCH BETTER at this particular task ( the twin tailsitter). Anyway, have been a fan for years ( I'm the guy years ago that wanted to move to Australia and live in your shed - I miss that shed, lol). Happy flying and best of luck with the Tailsitter! Bill

I watched tailsitter vidoes going back to 2017 and have forgotten the specific ones other than someone release videos of it in action in a banggood product listing. I knew there were issues since I never saw people post videos of their own copies showing successful flights. It is very difficult and glad you have the patience and interest to tackle it. Never seen an Inav version. Usually others used ardupilot I think. Do you remember when Peter Sripol introduced the FT Bronco vtol on the flite test channel? It seemed to daunting to try to copy it and no one has really produced a copy that others could follow along and build themselves. I thought the bronco was the coolest mod of the FT Explorer.

I've been interested in an RC VTOL tail-sitter after seeing a professional version that seemed totally sorted out, the Jedsy Glider, a Swiss medical delivery drone. However, Jedsy has apparently abandoned the tail-sitter design after spending years on development and receiving certification. On their website Jedsy are now showing a quadplane version similar to Google's Wing called the Jedsy X, rather than their original tail-sitter. Their promo video also features the new drone. All I can find on the change is a press release two weeks ago touting the expanded capabilities of the new drone. That, and watching Andrew struggle to make it work, has me reconsidering the project.

Tailsitters are the easiest build but maybe harder to tune well
@dougj8186
@dougj8186 Ай бұрын
@@AndrewNewton I'm keen to build some kind of VTOL/plane. Agree that the tail-sitter is the simplest VTOL design wise. It's not clear why Jedsy changed from their tail-sitter, as the Jedsy Glider looked to be dialed in spot on. They of course have professional software developers writing the flight software. The quadplane route is probably the most developed for the hobbyist but just doesn't appeal to me. I've also looked at tilt wings, like HobbyKing's discontinued Canadair CL-84 Dynavert. My first though would be to make the outboard panels fixed and rotate the inner sections with the motors/props, kind of a reverse of the V22. It would make the entire assembly more ridged and require less torque than rotating the entire wing. Simple enough as there is no need for flaps and I've already designed a 1.5M twist wing plane that uses 3D printed bevel gears, which also require less torque than levers and cams.

I love the vigilance! I have been playing around with a tail sitter. We can't deny we need a two stage CG. Vehicle needs to be tail heavy on vertical take off, but on transition to level it wont fly then. I am try to figure out how to shift a ballast forward in the transition stage . I am trying to move a lead rod from back to forward and back via a servo or something .

Making very good progress. Great VTOL transition transmitter sound, it almost sounds like "pull up". In wing mode, it's nice quiet flyer. The fish walk (yaw wag) at 3:12 was a bit comical. I assume a pull-up to vertical with speed before switch transition to vertical is less eventful? The tendency to fall on its back almost appears to be a software bug of some sort. Looking at data log might provide a clue as to why. Thanks for the entertaining video. :)
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton Ай бұрын
I'm a bit stumped at the moment. Everything I do makes the yaw waggle worse.
@Johan-ex5yj
@Johan-ex5yj Ай бұрын
I think that the main problem is that Elevons are not very effective at slow speeds, making the transition very hard. For this reason I would try to use tilt control on the motors. See: “Building an RC VTOL” by Tom Stanton.

Aka, The Hummingbird 😊 It is holding up exceptionally well, to those last meter drops. Could the winglets be held on by slots and magnets or velcro or some other way where they could detach and not break off? During the test period. 🤔

@wrevenaugh Ай бұрын
@Elisrc - If you are using an FSia6b receiver - The settings that work for me are > Multi > Flysky2A> PWM,IBUS. Of course you need to bind with the bind plug inserted in the FSia6b, but it was always the "Flysky2A" that used to catch me out. Hope that helps.

That's pretty impressive, it's obvious how hard it struggles to go vertical with no pitch authority. Little idea i just had, tell me if it's nonsense, but what if you transitioned by doing a half-roll and yawing yourself vertical with differential thrust?
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 28 күн бұрын
Interesting idea, but might be difficult to pull off. Just not the right type of craft for good tail sitter performance,
@belliduradespicio8009
@belliduradespicio8009 27 күн бұрын
@@AndrewNewton definitely not, the idea i had for a tail-sitter was a cruciform/X-wing quad, it would be far easier in terms of control. If you took two of this plane, sawed down the middle and put them together, the performance would be very interesting

The combination of Thrust Yaw and Aileron vectoring is a hard one isnt it !. I would love if you setup the controller later with a GPS/Mag (Walksnail $28 at the moment) and run Arduplane on it to see if running it in an Auto mode is any better. So auto QLoiter to FBWB and then back again, be VERY interesting to see. (The mag works in all directions)

Yes very tricky tuning. I do glance at Ardupilot occasionally.
@AerialWaviator
@AerialWaviator Ай бұрын
Even with Ardupilot VTOLs setups can be tricky, but at least there are known some workable recipes. For Ardupilot VTOLs its pretty common to include an airspeed sensor to help the software understand where it's in the transition. I don't envy Andrew, as INAV VTOL is very new and as such is challenging to sort out airframe quirks and software config quirks, not including finding the occasional bug.
