"It's not over until the fat lady sings" refers to the tradition of a heavyset woman performing the final aria or song in an opera. One should not assume the outcome of a situation until it has officially concluded. It's not over until it's over, and it's not officially over until "the fat lady sings."

7:34 "Yeah. But why would you go back to sleep if it's an _earthquake?"_ They live close to the San Andreas Fault where earthquakes of this magnitude are fairly common. The infrastructure is designed to withstand it, so the people learn to think of it as just a normal part of everyday life.

Great reaction. Just got to say when the father said he was a TV repairman it's obvious he was being sarcastic. The son was the technical man running the company it would seem considering he had to figure out why cable throughout the city was down. You don't call in a local cable guy to get cable running citywide.

I've watched the speech the president gives before the battle at least a hundred times. My dad was obsessed. I'm amazed our VHS didn't catch fire. David is not an actual cable repair person. He's a high-level engineer at a company that happens to do cable TV. His dad just calls him that to demean him because he thinks David should have a more important job after graduating from a prestigious university like MIT. It's like saying a person who is in charge of hundreds of computer servers that are very important works for Amazon, because Amazon just happens to rent one of the servers. It is so funny that at this point, people were still claiming that Will Smith's career was just a blip and would soon vanish, and now he's an Oscar winner who has been nominated multiple times.

When Will Smith crashed his plane into the canyon wall, he used a safety feature called an ejector seat. The pilots seats have rockets built into them which push the seats out of the plane at high speed, then release a parachute. So Smith deliberately crashed his plane hoping the alien would follow it into the wall, but ejected before the crash which is why he survived. Jeff Goldblum's character went to MIT, (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) a very prestigious university for scientific research. His father doesn't really understand what he does but obviously think he should be doing more important work than working at a TV company, which is why he dismisses him as a "cable repair guy" When the aliens first appeared, the anally probed drunk pilot was probably arrested for disorderly conduct if he was running around screaming about the aliens, (which seem likely). Like to watch your interactions of films foreign to you, very interesting. The Aliens knew the Caribbean would be the toughest, so they left it for last

"It ain't over until the fat lady sings" is a saying that means we can't presume to know the outcome of an event which is still in progress. The “fat lady” references opera sopranos, who were typically heavyset. The last song in an opera by Wagner has a heavyset soprano singing an aria that lasts for 20 minutes. The opera was over when the fat lady finished singing (and, I think, the world came to an end in the story … but I could be wrong about that).

16:49 "So they want beef because we went to the _Moon?"_ It is curious that they approached from _that_ particular direction. The next time you're outdoors, at night, and the _Moon_ is in the sky, consider just how _little_ of the sky it actually takes up. I mean, these guys could've approached from _any_ other direction, but for some reason, they just _had_ to sneak up on us. Like they were afraid that, if we saw them coming, we would just up and _leave,_ or something.

Given the moon moves over 2200 MPH as it orbits Earth in a mostly-circular path, it would be difficult to hide behind it for any appreciable length of time yet retain enough velocity to cross from moon to Earth in a few hours. The moon was chosen as a landmark by the fim makers because viewers know pretty much exactly where it is and that's as far as humans have ever gone, so everything beyond is an unknown, to varying degrees and, therefore, has the potential to be terrifying.

They went back to sleep after the earthquake because in California they happen all the time and people are used to them. You 2 are definitely not from a military family. When you're in the military, and an emergency arises, you have to go in. Depending on the emergency, all leaves would be canceled (this one would qualify). He didn't say anything about her staying on base with him because technically she not allowed to, especially on a secure base, because they are not married. Maybe they will say something later, but he is not a cable repair man. His dad just thinks that. Just to be clear, there is an Area 51. We have not idea of everything there or what goes on there, but the place does exist.

There’s an excellent Natalie Portman movie about self destruction, called “Anihilation,” that involves a “shimmer” energy field that mutates life and nothing that enters returns. It’s freaky, I definitely recommend it. Dr. Ventress, a psychologist, explains self destruction and why we do it. BTW, the mad scientist at Area 51 is Brent Spiner that played Lt. Commander Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation series, and movies.

The "fat lady sings" idiom refers to a tradition in the early days of TV (and maybe earlier) where the national anthem was sung right before the station went off of the air. This song was often sung by a heavy, traditional operatic soprano (a 'fat lady'). So, the programming wasn't totally, completely over until you heard the anthem or heard the fat lady sing.

You too, should ( But I don't expect you two to because i'm not a member but still.) you should try the Stargate feature film. Some members of the team that worked on it worked on Independence day. Then you should think about watching the series Stargate SG-1 it's two straight to home movies and the 2 spin-offs. Stargate Atlantis but start SGA after SG-1's 7th season. The other spin-off Stargate Universe but I don't recommend this one because I don't think it's all that good in comparison to the others but you should watch it to make your own opinion if you want. As for the straight to home movies, watch the first one, Stargate the ARK of Truth after all of SG-1 is done and the second one Stargate SG-1 continuum after SGA's 4th season.
