In 1968, several new ITV companies came on-air in July. Some Staff were transferred between companies and redundancy payments and other terms and conditions were not uniformly distributed around the network. The ACTT (Association of Cinematograph and Television Allied Technicians) demanded better conditions. Trouble began around 24th July but the main strike by the technicians ran from 3rd August to 18th August inclusive. Technicians were dismissed for refusing to work and this caused the total walk-out/lock-out. The management then decided to run a national service. An agreement was finally reached and all dismissed technicians were reinstated. A fairly normal service was run from 19th August. During the strike, ITV used the theme 'Here Comes the Band' as part of their start-up routine.

Wasn't it beyond ridiculous the restrictions that were placed on ITV back then. Not starting up until that late in the say. Mind you the same could be said if Channel 4 and their appalling schedules on launch on 1982.

Hi Robert. In 1968, broadcasting hours were limited. In the TVTimes of 8th August, there were two other programmes before 4.40 but could not be broadcast. To be honest, regarding the transmussion hours, it was all quite normal then; so we all thought little of it. We would not accept it now. Best wishes, Nigel.

I am confused on this, it’s ok but why when the others have their own startup themes?

Hi M L. In August 1968, all the technicians across all the ITV companies (except Channel) walked out in a dispute over pay and conditions. This meant that no new, live or regional programmes could be made. The management decided to broadcast a national 'generic' service from London. The regional identity of each ITV company was restored once the dispute had been resolved. The YTV ident is shown as the first programme in the listing was a production of theirs. Best wishes, Nigel.
