To me, the opening was the best part of the movie. Yes, CGIndy was a little distracting, but the stunts, staging, and action were classic Indiana Jones. I loved the music and how everything wrapped up that it could have just slapped "The End" after it, and I would have been satisfied. After it was done, I was ready to walkout of the theater saying, "That was great!" It felt like an Indiana Jones short film, and I loved it.

Hey Chris, similar sentiments to what Indiana Jones means to me. I'm almost 40 years old and the first movie I'd ever see in theatres was Last Crusade in '89 when I lived in Greece; I went with my parents when I was only 5 years old. We moved from Greece to Canada the next year. I took my parents to see Dial of Destiny last night and relived our experience 34 years ago... when Indy wanted to stay in the past, we all started to tear up.. and the waterworks really went off when Marion came onscreen at the end. We're a Polish family with a strong sentiment for our time in Greece... Dial of Destiny felt like it was written for us. We all loved it.

@@Outpost31Research Yeah, a lot of that comes from studios using VFX and post production as a concepting stage AFTER the shoot, or high-ups changing their mind about what they want during post. The best stuff uses digital extensions, which is where they'll build as much of a set as possible and then digitally extend it. David Fincher actually uses this technique A LOT, and you never even notice it. But constantly "touching up" stuff with CGI very rapidly deteriorates the compositing because the artists get less and less time to make sure it looks right against a deadline, so an over-reliance on "just doing it in post" puts the whole movie on the back foot.

My Dad and older brother wes ent to Raiders on opening weekend years ago. Watching and remembering my father's reactions, the standing ovation at the end by the whole audience is a moment that hasn't been captured in any movie experience I have had since. It is my all time favorite film, and Indiana Jones in my opinion the greatest character in motion picture history. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. I played with and owned most Star Wars figures, but it was Indiana Jones that got me out into the woods and truly played, re enacting scenes from the movie..even breaking the garage door opener pretending to save myself from a closing wall. The single biggest thing that encapsulates Chris’ problem with critics these days is the popularity of Rotten Tomatoes as the fundamental judge of a movie’s quality. Critics are now valued, not for their individual reviews and the quality of their individual experiences with the film but for their collective agreement over whether a film is good instead of bad. It’s a system that benefits films that satisfy everyone over niche or experimental films that may not be for everyone but will absolutely blow away the ones they will be for

Pairing indie with a woman was always how it was done, creating some distance that shame make him a deadbeat dad gives room for relationship growth without three full force is t thinking he was neglectful, and he's so old now, and a younger partner is necessary, having the family relationship instantly rules out any potential romance which would be inappropriate

Every tim Indy is on screen, I’m cheering, every time Helena comes in with some snarky shit, I’m a little bit irritated. She grew in me though and I genuinely believe that heartfelt scene towards the end was one of the best emotional moments in recent cinema. Well done James Mangold. I’d also really like to thank you for not just casting the movie out as garbage. Sometimes it’s hard to not feel guilty when you enjoy something everyone else seems to hate. I’ve seen so much vitriol since the movie came out, and you put my thoughts into exact words just as I have been saying. Weird that they did the same thing with Crystal Skull. Shia Labeouf's character, Mutt, was super annoying and constantly trying to dismiss Indy even though he should know that Indy was very capable. Indiana Jones is my all time favorite fictional character and after re-binge watching all of the previous films I can 100% say that I preferred Crystal Skull over DOD. The obvious reason is CS was directed by Spielberg and it felt more like a Indy film and regardless of how you feel about the ending; it was not as bonkers as DOD wild ending. The prologue of DOD was the best part because it was literally a love letter to the final chase sequence in the classic films. **Spoilers*** My review of DOD is mostly on par with the OP's. I do concur that although the film was good, it wasn't necessarily great or phenomenal. Overall, I'm mostly satisfied with DOD, my only 2 complaints are: 1) I feel there was a huge missed opportunity to not have Ke Huy Quan reprise his role as an obvious much older Short Round. This would've filled the gap left by Shia Labeouf (although no one's really complaining on that note), but would bring about a sense of further nostalgia and would bid homage to the partnership pairing we experienced in TLC, as Dad and Son played off each other so well and orchestrated. The other gripe is that the Mcguffin device, hence the "Dial", isn't effectively showcased in such a way to strike suspense and fear into the audience of it's detriment of being possessed into the wrong hands. I think most went into the theater expecting Indy having to repair some sort of temporal damages made by the antagonist by using the device in an illicit manner. There was so much more story that could've happened with the Dial, but we're only taken back to The Siege Of Syracuse. ...yes, while, effectively poignant, I feel like the trailers were misleading in having the audience thinking that the Dial was going to take the audience back into the earlier films from different viewpoints ala Back To The Future 2. It would've made for a much more interesting film, especially with the aforementioned inclusion of casting Ke Huy Quan. Anyways, that's my two cents. To each their own.

I’m really curious how they write off his wife and son from the last movie. Obviously that movie setup that Shia Labouf was supposed to take up the mantle of Indiana Jones and we all know how Shia went off the deep end after that movie. I think he’s evened out since then but I don’t think Shia is as eager to do these movies as he once did.

@@majuli8420 disagree, most reviews cover the valid criticisms they have that overwhelm most of the positive things they may want to say about the film e.g Mads Mikkelsen, John Williams score. All of Chris’s reviews are so milquetoast that they often lack any serious criticism. You may think he has a nuanced take, but I see his videos as either relying heavily on nostalgia or lacking any more significant critical thinking than a first-year film student.

I will never understand the hate that Crystal Skull gets. It seems that people just want to point at it and laugh cause it’s an easy target without really wanting be with it and study it. It’s the weird kid in class and it’s easier to laugh at them than befriend them. There’s a lot of damn good filmmaking in it. Yet everybody flocks to these readymade superhero studio movies that lack the voice of a soul creator behind the helm.

It's an easy target because so so so so awful from start to finish. It's one of the best examples of terrible filmmaking in modern cinema, made by one of the masters of the artform. If there's "damn good filmmaking in it", you're gonna have to point it out, because everyone else missed it.

His is the only major review that was overly positive about the movie which is fair enough if it’s opinion. All the rest said it was not as good as crystal skull. But, I have noticed that his recent reviews avoid any serious criticism and are all very praising. It’s a shame and it means I don’t really think he is trying to be objective any more, or give his real opinion. His old reviews had some wonderfully insightful criticisms which he didn’t shy away from.

We're almost to the point where they could do a new Indiana Jones that takes place entirely in the 1940's. The first part of the film that takes place at the end of WW2 was great. A few more little advancements in de-aging effects and it will be indistinguishable.

The last time I went to Hollywood, I went to what used to be called, Grauman's Chinese Theatre to take pictures on my phone. Went there, heard a lot of kids asking "Who's Jack Lemmon?" "Who's Elizabeth Taylor?" I was there when Harrison pressed his hands in the cement, while pressing "Patriot Games." I got to meet the president of Paramount, Brandon Tartikoff. Seeing Harrison, good. Talking with Brandon, great!
