I was a senior in high school when the Orangemen & the Hoosiers played this game. Both teams played great and Indiana won fairly.

Free throw shooting win championships & so many guys today struggle from the line. Coleman played very well great performance but brilliant strategy by Bob Knight knowing who to foul.

It is funny how things turn out. Keith Smart, the hero of this game and a good NBA prospect, could only manage to play two games in the NBA. I'm happy for his coaching career there though.

Bobby Knight was great at getting a group of players who weren't the best in terms of raw talent and getting them to beat teams with a deeper bench by genius teamwork. Here's a perfect example. None of the IU players in this game had great careers in the NBA but on Syracuse's side. You have The Rony Seikaly who had a great 10 year career in the pros. Granted IU had players that went pro but they had short lackluster terms there.

I’m an IU fan, but it’s still gotta hurt for Syracuse players and coaches, knowing that they were the infinity more talented team (two NBA lottery picks and another that played ten years in the League) and lost that game because they couldn’t hit free throws. RIP Daryl Thomas.

Looks like Jimmy Boeheim didn't have his team drilled well as far as calling a time-out when the bucket went through at 5 seconds on the clock. Didn't see one player motion correctly. Boeheim was expecting his players to do that, he didn't do it either, lol. 5 seconds is an eternity. Syracuse could have won a title but it still would have taken a hero.

A bit older now, I still greatly enjoy seeing IU win, but I now pay more attention to the Syracuse pain.

I remember watching this game as a kid. Syracuse had such a good chance to win. They just couldn't hit free throws in the final minutes. That was their undoing. Indiana's Keith Smart also took over in the end and refused to lose. I think Boeheim was a little out coached also. Knight saved his timeouts and used them effectively late. SU had better individual players but IU played together and played smart.

I was in 5th grade and we were gathered around our little TV watching. My dad kept out of his chair jumping up and down like he’d just won the lottery.

I will always wonder why Syracuse let 2 or 3 precious seconds churn off the clock after Smart’s basket. Not quite as bad as Chris Webber’s infamous Technical when he called a time out with no time outs left, but this comes close. Having 3 or 4 seconds on the clock could have resulted in a different outcome. Having said that I’m very glad IU won!!

Some observations. Smart’s shot really reminded me of Jordan’s shot 5 years earlier-boy could Smart leap. Seems like Syracuse should have had 3-4 seconds on the last play not one. Might have made a difference. Lastly, with 3 future nba players, Syracuse got outplayed by a team with significantly less talent. I’m sure at the time people thought Smart and Alford would be future NBA stars-even watching now I’m kinda surprised they didn’t have better pro careers.

i grew up an illini fan and of course we beat indiana that season and fell apart by march due to injuries and whatever else!!!! i was so pissed syracuse blew this game but what a moment for keith smart in his hometown i believe!!!

What most don't understand is that this game really showed the true greatness of Bobby Knight as a coach. Syracuse was loaded with future NBA players. They had the true edge in talent. But the fundamentally sound motion offense that Indiana ran along with their tenacious defense won the day. The mental toughness of Steve Alford along with the great game played by the underrated Keith Smart were something to behold. People like to talk about John Wooden. His teams were so incredibly stacked it was ridiculous. Let's not even talk about how UCLA got alot those players to join their program. That's a whole different discussion. No way John Wooden wins if he had to take the same team Knight had and play against a Syracuse team stacked with future NBA players Absolutely no way. Lastly people have to remember that Wooden coached at UCLA for 17 years before he won a national championship. Alot of the teams Wooden had early on resembled the team Knight had on the floor that night against Syracuse. Only when Wooden got the 2 greatest players in the history of college basketball along with several other undeniably great players did he win.

34 years later, as a big Orange fan, it pained me forever to think about this game, let alone watch it. Oh well, remember 2003!!!

Spoiler alert. Everybody who watched this remembers Smart hitting the last shot to win. I had forgotten Alford hitting a shot to end the first half. Tough play by a good, as opposed to great, group of players.

I was a 14 year old in the second semester of my freshman watching this game. I was pulling for Syracuse and was crushed when Smart hit that shot. Great game.

That's what decides big games mostly pure chance just whatever way the ball bounces but a big factor is free throws they're a little thing that makes a big difference

If it wasn't for their free throw suckability and Keith Smart, the Orangemen would have won it.

the game wasn't just about free throws..su had 10 point lead in 2nd half and 5-6 point lead multiple times but Iu kept defending and Alford 3s kept IU in game. keeping it close for a chance to win!!! WIN THEY DID TEAM BASKETBALL 101

NEVER NOTICED THIS BEFORE! ... Isn't it a technical foul to interfere when your opponent is proceeding to inbound the ball after a basket? Watch what Alford does after Smart's basket ... Seikaly takes the ball and Alford (12) swats it out his hands as seconds tick away ... I'm pretty sure that's a technical foul on Alford, giving SYR at least one FT and maybe two! ... What Alford did was completely unnecessary and could have gone down as THE most stupid play in NCAA history ... IU could have lost!
