I have a vague memory of the museum of flight in Seattle having something similar. I was pretty young at the time, but from what I remember it was a similar arm with a full cockpit attached to it. I was too young to ride, and I'm not entirely sure if they are still there :(. This was around a decade ago

Per the comments below, every innovation developed in the last few hundred years, yeah, same. Life is trying to kill us, daily. Create, destroy, create, destroy, kind of how it all works. When I started skydiving I told my kids, if I die doing this, understand I could pick no better way to go. I'd rather splat into the ground at 120 then lay in a hospital bed for six months being fed through a tube. Death has no great options. Anyway, looks awesome, I want a ride.

@ExcessiveOverkill
@ExcessiveOverkill 3 жыл бұрын
This is a Fanuc s-420iw it’s rated for 150kg I believe. However if you’re looking for one to go into manufacturing I’d get a much newer model, like the 2000ib or 2000ic. This one is around 25 years old and all the parts are obsolete. If you just want one mess around with, look at industrial surplus places for old used ones, sometimes you can find ones will all the parts for dirt cheap. You’ll also need 3 phase power to run one of pretty much any size.

@@ExcessiveOverkill Thanks for the help so far, I was hoping we could talk more, if you could email me (it’s in my channel). I want to know how much it weighs; did you train it with a pendant? How tall is it? I’m attempting to put it indoors, what type of ceiling height do I need just to clear its “elbow”. Looking forward to working together.

@@RichHaydleon That kind of arm cannot really be moved without a forklift... What you plan on doing with it really determines what arm you should get. Also note that 90% of the arms out there require 3phase power just to turn on. You need an indstural building with such serverice if you wish to run them at all.

It’s not TOTALLY safe, but I would trust this way more than those portable carnival rides. They’re meant to fail safe, meaning they just lock in place if there’s any error, including power loss. All the programs are tested without a person in it and are run in teach mode(you MUST hold in the deadman’s switch to allow movement, if you let go it stops immediately). There is of course still the chance of several bits all being simultaneously flipped in a way that it avoids the memory error detection, then tries to move somewhere it shouldn’t, in which case I would release the deadman switch. Or the most dangerous risk being complete mechanical failure(it rips out of the concrete, motor brakes fail, reducer fails), but even then, the counterbalance and springs will help prevent it from just dropping onto the ground, it’s more likely to reach into the air.

I believe they use a brand called Bot & Dolly, which is made exclusively for amusement rides..i.e. the factors of saftey are MUCH higher. Fanuc makes great robots, but something like this has no where near the saftey built into it that the 6-Axis robots have used at Universal, Disney, and Legoland.
@ExcessiveOverkill
@ExcessiveOverkill 3 жыл бұрын
I believe Bot & Dolly is just like an integrator. It looks like all the robots they use are Kuka’s. Someone else mentioned the robots used for rides only needed to change a couple things like end stops and the counterbalance to be in compliance.
