Industrial Steel and Walnut Dining Table

This amazing Industrial Steel and Walnut Dining table build is my take on Industrial / Steam Punk styled furniture. This build clearly has way overbuilt steel CNC plasma cut legs uniquely joined together with copper pipe to get what I think is an awesome industrial furniture look. Definitely a dining table I will be able to use for years to come.
As stated in the video, this dining table project was delayed many times and I am super glad to have it finished. Throughout the video you will notice alot of Time and season changes which of course really messes up the continuity . But as with all my videos I hope you will get some inspiration to go out and create your own unique pieces of art and or furniture for you and your family or even catch a new idea for the next build you have for a customer.
Yes, this build as with most of my builds requires alot of tools. So, don't watch this thinking you will go out in your garage over the weekend and build this Industrial table with a drill and a hammer. NOT to say you couldn't...I am sure it might be possible. Might.

Beautiful build. I enjoyed relating to your issues. It made me smile. I run into planning hiccups all the time with my builds. Grrrrr. I need to learn some kind of CAD program so everything can be proved out before starting.

Beautiful design! I love the combination of steel, copper and wood. A light look with industrial quality. For the wood worker, without the ability to cut the leg panels, the steel leg panels could be substituted with half inch plywood or other material for a similar look and acceptable durability.

I would love to see a version with plywood legs instead of steel. Maybe use nice solid wood that matches top to use instead of copper pipe as well? Could be really awesome. Thanks!!

You could weld small flat clips on the inside of the brace and put more inserts into the table and bolt the brace that way.

Yeah, I really should have just had my fat plate pieces cut a bit wider and it would have helped a lot. 👍🏼

You should have used angle as your support on the underside of your brackets. It would be just a strong or stronger and would have left you way more room for your bolt's.

How is it structurally stable in the length ways. Surely you'd need some sort of diagonal bracing.

If you mean strength from “racking” it’s pretty strong because it’s only 6’ long and the plate on the top of legs is attached very well. The number of fasteners used and also attaching to steel top stretcher it is rock solid. 👍🏼

What was the Floetrol for? I've never seen it used in that application before. Fantastic table!

Thank you! Floetrol actually makes a pretty good clear metal finish. Rust prevention. 👍🏼

That's great and all but how are you accounting for wood movement?

All the holes drilled for the mounting bolts are 3-4 sizes bigger than the bolts. No wider than the panels are it will be plenty of room for movement. 👍🏼

Did you try socket (allen) head bolts? They are narrower than regular hex head bolts

I actually like the big bulky looking bolts on the legs. If you mean on the bottom side of the table, yes I agree I should have probably used Allen head. They do look nice. 👍🏼

It’s a paint additive called Flotrol. It’s a clear finish that prevents the steel from rusting.

You had me at Pantera 🤙.. Anyway this is an amazing build. What's the thickness on the table legs? Looks almost like 5/16th. If so, that's one heavy table. Which leads me to my next question, How heavy is that bad boy? This is a beautiful table. 2 THUMBS UP 👍👍. And consider me a subscriber.

I'm through making tables and other shit for my wife! She has no effing patience at all and I'm slow cause I'm a perfectionist with ADD with a side of procrastination, and before I finish 1 project she's piled 5 more on me and that makes my ADD go off its rocker!! We've only been married for 3 years so my advice to other guys is just tell her all those tools arent yours and you couldn't nail 2 boards together if your life depended on it😜

I can’t for the life of me figure out why you wiped the legs gown with Floetrol after W-D40. School me please

I used the Wd40 just to clean any rust lingering because the legs sat for like 5 months before i got to the build. I cleaned after with acetone and then the Floetrol is actually a great alternative for a clear finish to keep the steel looking natural. It’s milky white as you probably know but when it dries it’s clear. It’s a great metal finish.

SquareSplinter Thanks for that explanation. I had no idea(obviously) that floetrol could be used as a finish. Could that also be used on planes, and other cast iron items?

Yeah for sure I think it could. It’s not going to have much wear resistance I don’t think. I actually to be honest don’t even really know the longevity of It as a finish. This was the first bigger project I have used it on. Time will tell I guess. It’s essentially a water based finish like a minwax water poly. It’s a sticky nasty mess I know that. 😬

It’s a great, easy finish for raw metal to protect it from rusting. 👍🏼

In my experience with it, it’s not too bad. You couldn’t use it for like a high traffic piece like a work top or something but for table legs like this it’s fantastic. 👍🏼

plate is 1/4" thick. Each leg weighs probably 40 lbs.

Probably no more than any other sturdy hardwood table but I will promise you I won’t have any scuff marks on the floor due to sliding it around. 😬. It has some heft to it.
