Wait, now I’m confused… I thought infrared saunas gave you more benefits? Now you’re saying we only get that 20% benefits instead of the 40% found in that study from Finland? So if someone was looking for the absolute best they would pick a traditional finished sauna? (Considering they don’t have any health risk from being in one) I follow someone on IG that just got his traditional sauna and he likes that it gets hotter quicker which contradicts they $15k sauna you mentioned that it would take a long time to heat

I get a much deeper sweat and start sweating faster in my infrared sauna compared to the gyms sauna that’s over 190 degrees

I’ve started doing ice baths in the mornings.... It’s amazing for the bones and muscles! Start slowly....

bad for the prostate, for some people you develop prostate issues (countries that do a lot of cold bath have more prostate issues). If you have prostate issues, sadly you shouldnt do it so its really frustrating

Matt says, correctly, that an infrared sauna doesn't heat the body primarily by hot air. What he leaves out is that in a traditional sauna, the hot air discussion aside, heats the body with infrared the same way an infrared sauna does. The difference is that the traditional sauna gives you a hot epidermis as well - which I don't place much value on. Nobody has shown that traditional sauna benefits are due to the hot air, or that infrared saunas have any less benefit than traditional ones.

Aaaand what John is leaving out, is that this infrared emission from a traditional sauna, doesn’t begin until the steel, walls, and bench is full heated? Until then, it’s just hot air.

@@matt-justice That's half correct, Matt. All objects emit infrared, especially hotter ones like a traditional sauna's heater or stove. The heating element of the stove is buried in the housing, so of course the steel walls need to heat up before the stove can effectively radiate outward (I didn't include discussion of nuts, bolts and washers, either :)) That's what's the main driver of heat to the body and resulting therapy - the direct radiative heating from the conventional (energy hog) heater. Reflective and re-emitted heating from the sauna's interior walls and benches helps but is not very important, just as in an IR sauna. The reason for warming the sauna interior prior to entering is so that it's no longer absorbing (stealing) much energy from the heater or your body.

I bet that, if you built a sauna inside a vacuum chamber and sat in it with an air mask on, you'd get the same sauna benefits. :)

1. It has not been shown that traditional Finnish sauna benefits accrue from the air temperature that they produce. 2. It has not been shown that infrared saunas produce less therapeutic benefit than traditional Finnish saunas. 3. Traditional Finnish saunas require more labor and material to produce, and are more energy and time intensive to use, than infrared saunas.

I get I don’t need air temp (but it helps),but I don’t need to waste 45 min of my day in an infrared compared to 20 min in a traditional. Same benefits, less time…….just saying

Love the encouragement to walk! But I think you are fundamentally misunderstanding the best (steel-man) perspective of the Finnish sauna community. I can't tell if this is purposeful... I hope not.
