Inkle Woven Shoelaces - How to Tablet Weave

Күн бұрынWhat a fun project! If you've been interested in learning more about card or tablet weaving, the shoelaces are quick and the laces are basically ready to use after weaving.
Sometimes I feel like the terms used can be a little confusing, so: we are using an inkle loom to weave, but the method of weaving is called tablet or card weaving. You can use the inkle loom without the cards by using the peg in the middle of the loom to create a shed.

Clicked the link through for the 20/2 cotton at Lone Star - I want to make shoelaces but the 10 cotton crochet I had was too wide, and hard to control, so trying this stuff. Great video. Hopefully mine come out that clear!

Thank so much, I saw a video where they work in round for shoe laces, but when I saw your video I remember that shoe laces are also flat, which I prefer

How are the laces wearing? I thought I would have to use silk to tablet weave shoe laces, but cotton is more appealing to me.

It's quite thin, but thankfully not that thin. I have heard that people will use sewing thread sometimes 🙃

I got them from Angelus Direct. They are a little expensive, but they've held up really well. You can find cheaper ones on Amazon. angelusdirect.com/

I warped this pattern up today (after several months of plain weave on my Ashford Inkle). My question is about the pattern of card turning. First I noticed not being able to firmly beat like with heddle plain weaving. Ok, I think practice will work this change out). But what I still don’t get is how to do the pattern. 4 turns away and 4 turns back seems balanced and nice… but wait…. 1, 2,3,4 then doesn’t seem logical to do 4 again because the weft would Unweave! So is it in reality 1,2,3,4,3,2,1,2. Etc. ? Also, how do you keep track of where you are at? Going forwards or backwards and on which pick? My laces are looking more like wood grain where I lost count instead of diamonds…. Help!

I think how firmly you can beat also depends on your yarn. My first card weaving attempt used unmercerized, very soft cotton and I couldn't get it to beat nicely, so there's that to consider. Are you beating after you turn the cards? That really makes the weft lock into place. Yes, I think you're correct: 1,2,3,4,3,2,1,2 etc. for the card order. As for remembering: I have my cards marked on one side, so I know that's my start or stop point and I also use a post-it with an arrow that I turn depending on whether I'm turning my cards towards or away from me. What are the best sizes and types of threads to use to make these?

I used 20/2 mercerized cotton for this project, but depending on how larger you want your band to be, you could pick a larger thread. I would recommend a smooth thread type, like pearl/mercerized cotton or silk. I've seen some people use wool, but I've never tried that.

What is this wet finishing, and how does it work to improve the weaving project? 😮

wet finishing is where you soak your woven piece in water for a bit. It shrinks the yarn a little bit more and locks the threads into place, so your weaving is more stable.

I usually do warm water, but however you plan on washing it in the future is good. I do 30 min or so.
