This dual-chain bike allows you to pedal both forward and backward to move the bike forward, making it a lot of fun to ride.

The idea is well over 100yrs old and pedalling backwards gives a lower gear. Dead simple using two freewheels.

Clockwise rotation is meant to continuously tighten the freewheel. By pedaling reverse side, you now untighten the freewheel combo. Not a real life solution but fun :)
@samuelrydzwullens
@samuelrydzwullens Жыл бұрын
Actually, by having the cain cross over he ensures that one chain is always applying clockwise torque to the freewheel assembly. One freewheel will spin backwards, but the drag resulting from this will not suffice to unscrew the freewheel.

Cassette* but yes. A free coaster not free wheel. Would be where you no longer hear the clicking noise a cassette makes and would not need to rotate your pedals backwards to keep backwards momentum like you do a casstte. Its also looser and takes a quarter pedal to engage the mechanism inside the free coaster that locks the free coaster when pedal pressure is applied similar to the cassette but pretty sure its not teeth but a entirely different mechanism and free coasters more then not are on bmx bikes for easier fakying . With a cassette however the teeth are what you hear clicking as they are sliding in over the spaces they would lock into when pedal pressure is applied and are most common on mountain bikes like that .

Forward pedal = Low gear. Backward = High gear. Thats all. Only two gears while original got set of gears. One good thing about this design is using dual chain where if one fails, you can use the other one. However, since one of the chain always rub each other, there is possibility of premature failure to the whole system because one chain rubbing each other chain and the other chain taking extra load due to friction created by the other rubbing chain. Will it slow down if pedalling in reverse - NO since the freewhelling unit both set to freewheel in reverse. Edit: Best possible use case: Create some youtube video.
@KillerRaptorr
@KillerRaptorr Жыл бұрын
At the end it shows him putting a single chain on. Not two. It's still a single chain just super LONG. He's over lapping it so the inner gear goes to the outside pedal sprocket. While it then loops back and goes onto the outside freewheel sprocket and then loops to the inner crank sprocket. It's still a single chain system. Though you're right it could be split into two. But still a rather pointless thing. Cause i mean if you had a 3x7 speed freewheel system. You could always use 3 chains.
@madsam0320
@madsam0320 Жыл бұрын
@@KillerRaptorr that’s right it seems to be one long chain looping twice, one in counter rotation. One of the returning chain cross from one side of the back gears to the other side, avoiding rubbing on crossover. But the comment above is the only one getting it right, ie pedalling in both directions for two sets of gear ratios. I guess the advantage is not having to shift gears to change the ratios, just pedal in different direction.

This method is or at least was very popular in some places, it is called retro-direct chain drive. Usually used on delivery cart type trikes.
@ShinyUmbreon765
@ShinyUmbreon765 8 ай бұрын
Compare the redirect to its contemporaries and it had an argument. 3 speed hubs are expensive and cant be geared very low. The derailleurs systems were fragile and very narrow, two or 3 cogs with one tooth jumps. In context the retrodirect gave two useful ratios while being stupid simple.

Might work well with long seat and two hand positions. I think backwards pedaling needs different ergonometrics. Backwards pedaling may be more efficient seated more front or back and leaning. Just my intuition. In recumbent bike the difference may be small between directions.

Watched the video, read the comments. This was the more complicated but visually more impressive alternative to a "retro-direct" gear system. As one viewer pointed out, the idea is from the start of the 20th century. So before any type of gearing system we know today. Bikes were all single speed. With the retro-direct you could have two speeds. That was the point. All this guy did was reproduce an idea for your interest. Although I must admit that bike and parts got butchered about a bit. About six years ago I modified a single speed into a two speed using the other, simpler system. No cutting, no welding, all nuts and bolts using standard bike bits. One gear, backpedal, for starts and slight uphills. The other, normal pedal action, for crusing. The freewheel element was maintained for downhills. You couldn't walk the bike backwards though the transmission would lock up. What was the point? Among other things to see the look on other cyclists faces as you went cruising by back-pedalling. Fun days.
