Gyoza dumplings are a Japanese food I can eat anyway, every day! They're more than a snack, they can be the main meal and in Miyazaki City, it's so popular, they're no.1 in Japan in the Yaki Gyoza Rankings, for 3 straight years. What makes their gyoza the best or most popular in Japan?
Gyoza has the image of being a side dish, I ask Cody of Ramen Guide Japan if that's the case. The answer: never mind! I think Gyoza is better than Ramen and I am sure viewers will let me hear it in the comments.

I was stationed in Guam back in the 1980's. There was a ramen shop there called Aji Ichi. There I had ramen for the first time. I also had Gyoza, and a lifelong obsession was born. I finally had to learn to make it myself, since finding it in the midwest isn't easy. Would I be ridiculous if I flew to Japan just to eat Gyoza? Because I'm thinking about it.

@@stoveguy2133 Yes, but I live in a town of 1200 in the middle of the country. It takes over an hour by interstate to get anywhere that would have gyoza. And the last time I had it, it wasn't very good. It would be best to get it from the source. Hence, me planning a trip to Japan. I'm retired, I can do that.

I just spent 3 weeks in Japan, and I have to say out of all the awesome food I tried, Gyoza stole my heart the most. They were so different than the ones I get back home in Canada. The Tare sauce is so damn addicting. I would go out late at night and just order 2 or 3 orders so I could eat like 20 gyoza all at once. The best were in Kagoshima in my opinion; the Kurobuta black pork makes them soooo juicy and delicious!

I grew up eating gyozas as main dish. Didn't know people ate them as side dish until I started to go out to eat ramen. Gyoza can definitely hold as its own. Although, I do love some good fried rice with gyozas!

Sayan4070 has it right. Gyoza are a main dish at home. I guess if your family is rich and never cooks at home then you might see them as a side. But if you ever actually make them you realize that it is really hard to only make 3/person. If you are already making the wrapping and filling you might as well make a meal.

Or - you can make them yourself. It’s actually quite easy and we DO NOT eat frozen gyoza often. Just need the skin / wrapper. It’s pork, garlic, chives - or ANYTHING really. And they taste just as good 😋 put them in a pan, add some oil or fat, water, cover them up for 4-5 minutes and you’ve got paradise gyoza

I don't even need rice to complement (good) gyozas. (especially when i make them at home) what i like the most about gyozas is that you can have them as a snack by having a few, while you can keep eating more of them until you're satisfied, as with any meal. and the crunchiness is so satisfying compared to other dumplings which are usually just boiled or steamed.

I’ve never thought of gyoza as a side dish but simply one of the food on the menu. If anything, I think it compliments chahan more than ramen from my own personal experience. But man, that gyoza stuffed chicken wing, though… I can just imagine the taste as you bit into it, yum! Also I’d take the smile of a child as approval over a ramen expert any day.😆

Since we will be in Miyazaki during Sakura Season, now I have to try it there after learning from your excellent video how special it is to that region. Maybe I will finally find gyoza to meet the match of that first gyoza in Kyoto?
