I'm doing KonMari method with people I meet now. I ask myself if they spark joy and if they don't, I would throw them away
@faithrada
@faithrada 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm.. "throw them away"? How about ... Set them Free? Some people come into our lives to show us what we do NOT need. Everyone has important lessons to teach us ... we just need to learn what they are. Hint: Nothing 'here' ultimately is as it appears to be. Consider: Everyone in your own dream IS ultimately YOU. Just something to contemplate... if one is ready to look there. Peace

She seriously changed my life! The spark joy concept is what did it for me.

Modern Minimalist Mom I've heard that principle for a long time now. Was it really her who invented that concept? There are plenty of things in my house that don't spark joy but that I need. Like my ice scraper!
@ModernMinimalistMom
@ModernMinimalistMom 5 жыл бұрын
lockergr I’m not sure if she “invented” it per se... but she definitely popularized it. The way I see it with the ice scraper is that it sparks joy when you are able to scrape the ice off your car as opposed to being stranded because you can’t or having to use a less effective tool. Sparking joy to me is also about contentment and satisfaction from owning something.

@@lockergr Trust me... if you NEED to get somewhere some frosty morning and your windshield is totally iced over... finding a good sturdy ice scraper will most definately Spark Joy... if your only other choice is your fingernails. Been There! LOL

@@lockergr PS... she never said she invented this concept... but she did certainly refine it and re-introduce it to the world... in a most delightful, joyful way. 😇

Well I managed to throw away some of the vegetables, my alarm clock and my bills because they don’t bring me joy.

I don't understand why you aren't brimming with joy when you get those magical papers in the mail demanding that you pay someone.

It seems as though you are purposefully misinterpreting here? It would certainly spark joy for me.. to have a functioning Alarm Clock... to wake me up on time.. so I did not miss my flight to some important event, etc. I forgot my alarm clock once... it was NOT a joyful experience... it was incredibly stressful. My mail was once misdirected. I could not pay my bills in a timely fashion and that created a lot of havoc in my life.. so now, when both my checks and bills arrive on time... it most definately sparks joy for me. Life flows more smoothly when we have dependable mail service. Organizing one's mail can bring a LOT of joy, otherwise the water and electric could get shut off. That is NOT my idea of Joy.

I wish she addresses how to deal with very old documents like old love letters of grand and great grand parents etc. It's not only the clutter of clothing and items but paper can have powerful sentimental value that makes it difficult to throw out.
@sukunasboytoy1366
@sukunasboytoy1366 5 жыл бұрын
it's something u decide for yourself. because according to her philosophy, happiness is what everyone wants to achieve. and the home is an extension to ourselves. if that sentimental item only gives you pain, then throw it away. otherwise if it bings you joy, then keep it.

In one episode, I think it was pointed out not to focus on what you're throwing away but focus on what you really want to keep. If it means that much to you and it's not ruining your life, keep them. E.g. That one guy didn't throw away ALL his baseball cards, just the ones he didn't need or care about (that's why konmari emphasised to hone your spark joy sensor) and it made it easier for him to truly take care of what he kept because of its manageable amount. You can put the precious letters in a beautiful storage box or a tiny wooden chest so it's easier to access for a quick read every night. If the letters fill up a whole room/garage then obviously just keep favorite ones. A room full of mould sounds scary yo.
@erinlee5936

She addressed that in an episode on the show. Put old letters in a treasure box since it gives you joy. Watch the show. It will change your life.
@faithrada
@faithrada 5 жыл бұрын
@@erinlee5936 Yes. Some confuse what Marie Condo does with "minimalism"... but she is NOT a minimalist. Certainly minimalists can use her methods also... but she is about much more than ' getting rid of stuff'. She is about KEEPING ONLY THAT which brings JOY.

somethings don't create a spark but are necessary!!
@lockergr
@lockergr 5 жыл бұрын
bikinggal1 yes I wonder how she addresses that. I guess spark joy is maybe not the right term. Look for instance, I have a really crappy can opener that is brand new and it definitely doesn't spark joy but I don't feel like spending money on a new one. If I got rid of all the old things that don't spark joy and replaced them with new things that did spark joy then I would be stone-cold broke

The two ( Joy and Practicality) need not be exclusive of each other. I have two spatulas.. one is red and better designed. The other is dull black and more flimsy. The black one is going to a new home. Someone will certainly appreciate it if they have NO spatula at all. Trying to flip an egg with one's hands rarely sparks joy. 🙀
