1)!Her English is getting better (around A2 level) but it’s not there yet. She can certainly understand informal conversations but she still needs help from an interpreter for formal conversations and expressing her points more clearly. Her English speech on Ted talk is fully prepared, rehearsed, and practiced a lot of times beforehand. (And who wouldn’t practice their own speech ?) 2) Stop demonizing us Americans for not being able to speak a second language. Newsflash: A lot of Americans were able to speak a second or third language (mostly their heritage languages) during the 19th century. It was our evil government who demonized those who spoke a language other than English via forceful Anglicization policy (and the ‘speak American’ mentality) during the early 20th century, causing the loss of millions of potential bilinguals (New England French, Louisiana French, Métis French, Texas German, Midwestern German, Minnesota Scandinavian languages, New Mexico Spanish, etc.). We are repairing the damage but we are not there yet. Everything takes time. 3) Japan’s education system is among the best in the world but the Japanese are generally bad at learning and teaching foreign languages. This may sound hurtful but it’s true and not completely their fault. The fact that a Japanese person must spend 18 years in schooling before being able to read newspapers properly clearly demonstrate how difficult the Japanese language is and also why foreign languages are badly taught (students would need to pay attention more on their own language before others aka English, French, Brazilian Portuguese, etc)

Yeah. She can barely speak English here (that’s the truth). However, she is getting better (but not there yet).

Most people can't get past the "but I might need it someday" mentallty, and she helps them focus on "it doesn't bring me joy" aspect. instead. Duh...most THINGS can't give you joy...unless you are extremely shallow.
